Whale Resurfaces in Delaware River, New Jersey State Police Say

April 13 (Bloomberg) -- A Beluga whale spotted swimming in the Delaware River near Trenton yesterday has resurfaced to the south today and New Jersey officials are trying to determine what to do with the mammal, state police said.

The whale was first spotted swimming in the river near Trenton around noon yesterday, and then disappeared after dark, State Trooper Stephen Jones said in a telephone interview. A boater saw the whale again this morning swimming about 8 miles (12.9 kilometers) to the south near the city of Beverly, about 12 miles north of Philadelphia.

State Police and the Brigantine, New Jersey-based Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a non-profit group that helps rescue stranded animals, have boats in the river and are assessing the situation, Jones said. A barge may have scared the 8-foot-to-12- foot whale into heading north again, he said.

Beluga whales are prone to stray from their normal habitats, Rhonda Bailey, a stranding technician with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, said. The whales, which can grow as long as 16 feet, typically inhabit Arctic and subarctic regions in Russia, Greenland and North America, according to the National Marine Mammal Laboratory.

``We had one last summer up in the New England states, a bit of a wanderer,'' Bailey said in a telephone interview. ``It's just the species, they can wander at times.''
