Nearly 16 years after his last appearance in the American Hockey League, Albany assistant coach Gates Orlando suited up for the River Rats in their 5-2 loss at Syracuse on Friday night.

The 41-year-old Orlando, who won a Calder Cup championship with Rochester in 1987, was pressed into action after recalls and injuries left the River Rats shorthanded. Even with Orlando in uniform, Albany dressed only 16 skaters, one under the limit.

Wearing number 25, Orlando was held scoreless and was a minus-4 in the game. He played parts of five AHL seasons with Rochester from 1984-88, then spent several seasons in Italy and Switzerland before retiring. Orlando is in his second season as an assistant in Albany.
