And, Manta, if our defense was sooo great last season(it was really good BTW) then how come it was typically referred to as the no-name defense. You make it seem like Martin was the be all and end all of our D. Him and Mottau are pretty much the only two defenseman we lost and I seem to recall we did pretty well holding down our D last year when Martin was out most of the season.

Smart player and smart person are two different things. I would gather that you think Joe Thornton is a smart player but I've also read that he is kind of a bonehead. I said nothing about Clarkson's character. Anyway, I retract my comment about Clarkson being kind of dumb. I don't want to get into it.

I'm not crucifying him for anything. I'm just trying to make my case that he's not at the caliber that White was at. Fraser was pretty impressive when he first got called up. I feel the expectations for him to carry a lot of the defensive weight in the playoffs may have been too much pressure, ergo, he $hit the bed

Add to that you take away White and add Fraser then the pairings won't look that hot. I'm sure Johnny Mac would prefer 3 lines of on veteran/one rookie.

Fraser also had some god-awful mistakes in the playoffs. Didn't he give away the puck to set up a gwg for Philly?

"Analysts" always make the prediction for either the Wings or Pens these days. I think they think it's a safe bet and I guess according to them fans either like the Wings or Pens. This is so apparent by the fact that instead of showing the first Leafs game the NHL has decided to show the Pens home opener on the jumbo screen in the town square in the suburbs of Toronto.

I don't know about his intelligence but Clarkson seems kind of like he's in the double digits in IQ
