Have you ever met Joe Nieuwendyk?

If you haven't, it's too bad because Joe is one terrific guy.

In fact, he's such a down-to-earth fellow that there's no question he'd prefer as little publicity as possible over his impending 500th NHL goal.

Fortunately for Joe, he's getting his wish.

The local print media is virtually ignoring this amazing accomplishment of 499 goals ... soon to be 500 ... as if it were an everyday event.

Granted, Lou Lamoriello stresses team above all ... always has and always will ... but even the Devils' leader will acknowledge that his center is on the threshold of something so special that a week of Nieuwendyk columns and features would not be a very bad thing at all.

But, then again, such is the nature of hockey and hockey players.

The game seems to underplay its assets. And the players
