Nieuwy25
I warned you . . . if you don't want to read an article about Joe Nieuwendyk, skip this. Fischler article from Fox Sports FISCHLER: Nieuwendyk rates bigger spotlight BY STAN FISCHLER FOX Sports Net Jan. 17, 2003 4:03 p.m. Have you ever met Joe Nieuwendyk? If you haven't, it's too bad because Joe is one terrific guy. In fact, he's such a down-to-earth fellow that there's no question he'd prefer as little publicity as possible over his impending 500th NHL goal. Fortunately for Joe, he's getting his wish. The local print media is virtually ignoring this amazing accomplishment of 499 goals ... soon to be 500 ... as if it were an everyday event. Unfortunately, Joe deserves better. A lot better. Look at it this way; when Joe achieves his milestone he will be one of only 31 players in major league hockey history to have reached such a stratospheric level of goal scoring. New Jersey/New York media isn't making much of Joe Nieuwendyk's impending 500th goal. Getty Images More than that, Joe is already ahead of Hall -Of-Famers Jean Ratelle, Norm Ullman, Alex Delvecchio, and Darryl Sittler. When he gets his 500th, Nieuwendyk will be only seven away from the immortal Jean Beliveau. That is an incredibly rarified atmosphere. So, why aren't columnists following Joe around? Do we have to tell them that the Giants and Jets are finished playing football? Surely they know that baseball's spring training doesn't begin next week nor that the U.S. Open isn't about to happen next month. Hey, this new Nieuwendyk fellow is something special. He not only is a five-star, Class A act but he's also a remarkable athlete in the Mark Messier mold. Granted, Lou Lamoriello stresses team above all ... always has and always will ... but even the Devils' leader will acknowledge that his center is on the threshold of something so special that a week of Nieuwendyk columns and features would not be a very bad thing at all. But, then again, such is the nature of hockey and hockey players. The game seems to underplay its assets. And the players
Elias Sports Bureau
I'm very happy for him... and us. He's SUCH a class act and so it's easy to wish the world for him.
