Sportsnet.ca -- Sean Avery's unscripted lifestyle has worn thin in Los Angeles, leading the Kings to inform the volatile player his career in Hollywood is over.

According to the LA Times and a source with the team, Avery got into an argument with assistant coach Mark Hardy during practice Wednesday, a move the Kings felt was the last in a long line forgettable incidents. A closed-door meeting was held with Avery, General Manager Dave Taylor and interim Coach John Torchetti after practice where the Kings made the decision.

"We're moving on without him," the spokesman said. "We have informed Sean of this."

Avery will be an unrestricted free-agent after the season, but the Kings are not expected to retain him.

The argument with Hardy reportedly erupted after Avery refused to participate in a practice drill, and refused to leave the ice. The two exchanged words, but it did not become physical.

Avery's sudden departure spells the end to a very controversial season. Here are some of the lowlights:

September: Avery is forced to issue an apology after making comments about French-Canadian players, specifically then-Coyote defenseman Denis Gauthier; who hit the Kings' Jeremy Roenick in an exhibition game.

October: During a game against Edmonton, the Oilers' Georges Laraque accused Avery of using a racial slur. Avery denied the charge.

November: The NHL fines Avery for diving in a game, then fines him again for criticizing the first diving fine.

January: Avery was benched by then-Coach Andy Murray for disrespecting teammates, though many stood up for him.

The Avery dismissal comes just days after one of the team's most-respected stars, Luc Robitaille, retired from the game and will be honoured on Saturday. The Kings need to win all of their remaining three games to make the post-season, and both the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers need to lose two of their final three games in regulation.
