Ex-NHL player Rob Ramage gets 4 years in prison for a crash that killed ex-Blackhawks player

NEWMARKET, Ont. (AP) -Former NHL player Rob Ramage was sentenced to four years in prison for a 2003 crash that killed ex-Chicago Blackhawks player Keith Magnuson.

Magnuson died at the scene when a rental car driven by Ramage slammed head-on into another car north of Toronto. In October, a jury found Ramage guilty on all five charges he faced, including impaired driving causing death.

Ramage is also banned from driving for five years after his release.

The Ontario Court of Appeal ruled Thursday that Ramage will be allowed to appeal his conviction. Ramage's lawyer, Brian Greenspan, said he would appeal the conviction and sentence.

The prosecution said Ramage had up to four times the legal blood-alcohol limit at the time of the crash. The defense claimed blood and urine tests were flawed.

Ramage spent 15 years in the NHL with eight teams, winning Stanley Cup finals with the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens.

In November, a Missouri jury awarded the Magnuson family $9.5 million in the civil suit against Ramage and National Car Rentals of Canada.
