NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CP) -- Jordin Tootoo of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, has been named to the Nashville Predators' roster and can become the first player of Inuit descent to play in a National Hockey League game on Thursday when the Predators open the season against Anaheim.

The 20-year-old winger was told by the Predators' coaching staff Monday that he had earned one of 13 roster spots at the forward position.

The five-foot-nine, 195-pound Tootoo scored his first NHL pre-season goals on Friday and Saturday, but had already earned his team's approval by throwing his trademark powerful checks and drawing penalties.

He was a fourth-round draft pick, 98th overall, of the Predators in 2001.

Tootoo was a fan favourite in Halifax at the 2003 world junior hockey championship because of his barely-controlled style of play and his unique background.
