Rutgers got sneak preview of Terps

ACC: Duke sent film in violation of policy

By Heather A. Dinich | Sun reporter

October 2, 2007

The Atlantic Coast Conference acknowledged yesterday that the Duke football program violated league policy last week by providing Rutgers - the Terps' opponent this past Saturday - with film of Maryland's Sept. 22 game against Wake Forest.

Maryland lodged an oral complaint with the league Sunday, though Duke is unlikely to face punishment.

A member of Duke's video staff - unbeknown to Duke coach Ted Roof - owed a "favor" to a member of the Rutgers staff and provided the film, according to a source in the Maryland athletic department. The ACC confirmed that, in doing so, the staff member violated the league's video-exchange policy, which requires conference schools to notify other ACC schools when a nonconference program asks for game film.

"There's really no hard and fast punishment for it," said Mike Finn, the ACC's associate commissioner for media relations.

Duke spokesman Art Chase said Blue Devils athletic department officials declined to comment and will allow the ACC to handle the incident.

Finn said this happens "from time to time, but not usually," and that ACC associate commissioner for football operations Michael Kelly is dealing with this case.

"In past situations, this hasn't been a penalty-type thing," Finn said. "They might get a letter reiterating the policy and asking them to comply, but it's not really a penalty in this case. It wasn't a wanton disregard for the policy. It was just a mistake by somebody."

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said, "That's a matter between Maryland and the ACC."

The film apparently wasn't all that helpful, as backup quarterback Chris Turner led the Terps to a 34-24 win against the then-No. 10 Scarlet Knights on Saturday.

The incident occurred less than three weeks after coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots were penalized by the NFL because a video assistant taped New York Jets signals while on the sideline of a Sept. 9 game at Giants Stadium.

Well yeah that really HELPED them :P

Damn I am getting real sick of Rutgers real fast here

(lucked out this year that most of the home games conflict with other things)

how about play a REAL top 15 opponent ONCE in the early part of your schedule THEN worry about cheating ... or even SHOWING UP!!!!

So is it illegal to ask for tapes from other teams, or just illegal to lend them?

With nearly every danm game televised these days, why is it even necessary to borrow from other teams?

And yes, we all know it didn't matter at all. They were not prepared & did not execute.

They do need a bigger conf. opponent early in the sked, instead of the cakewalks they did play.

The only thing those first 3 games did was get them over-confident.

Not sure if this is true but supposedly the reason they play such crappy teams is because the better teams don't want to play in such a small stadium. Hopefully the expansion of the place should fix that.
