The New Jersey Devils will live with Scott Gomez's $5 million US salary, at least for the time being.

Team president and general manager Lou Lamoriello told Toronto's FAN 590 Radio that he will accept the arbitrator's ruling and sign the forward to the one-year contract awarded on Tuesday.

The Devils had 48 hours to decide whether to retain Gomez for next season or walk away from the deal and make him an unrestricted free agent immediately.

The contract places the Devils over the NHL's $44 million salary cap for 2006-07, and Lamoriello is expected to make roster changes to get his 23-man lineup under the limit by the opening day of the regular season on Oct. 4.

The team already signed forward Patrik Elias to a $42 million, seven-year contract and defenceman Colin White to a $18 million, six-year contract. The Devils also have to sign forward Brian Gionta and defencemen David Hale and Paul Martin for next season.

Both parties went to arbitration on Friday with the Devils offering $4 million US, and Gomez reportedly asking for $7 million US next season. He made $2.204 million in 2005-06.

Gomez, 26, is coming off a career season, scoring 33 goals and 84 points in 82 regular season games. The six-year veteran has 103 goals and 390 points in 476 career games, all with New Jersey.

Gomez made a big splash in his first NHL campaign, scoring 70 points and winning the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 1999-2000. He also helped guide the Devils to a Stanley Cup victory that season, his first of two NHL championships.

What a suprise, I really thought they were just gonna let him go. Way to go Lou, you made a hard decision quick... SARCASM

Yeah unlike that arbitrator. I still say he was practicing magic tricks instead of announcing the decision.

i think if we cant trade mogilny or malakhov we should trade matvichuk (or lukowich) and wiemer for draft picks or a cheap backup goalie cuz right now, we should be thinking about signing gionta martin and hale as our first priority and i think if we have to, we trade brylin. sorry sergei, i love ya man... we may have a lot of open roster spots so hopefully we'll get a chance to see zajac, bergfors, pihlman, voros and some other younger guys get a shot. maybe one of the 4 players we just signed recently will surprise people and make the team...

it's gonna be so hard to trade mogilny and malakhov so we might as well let them come to training camp and... haha, hope one or both of them gets hurt so we can put them on the injured list FOREVER

MSG has an official release:

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -The New Jersey Devils re-signed Scott Gomez to a one-year, $5 million contract Thursday, ending speculation that the team would be unable to fit the 26-year-old forward's contract under the NHL's salary cap.

The details of the contract were confirmed to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the negotiations who requested anonymity because the team had not yet announced the signing. The Devils did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

Gomez was awarded $5 million by an arbitrator on Tuesday. According to the person familiar with the negotiations, the Devils went to arbitration offering Gomez $3.5 million, while Gomez sought $6.5 million.

Gomez earned $2.2 million last season, when he set career bests for goals (33) and points (84) for New Jersey, which lost in the second round of the playoffs to eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina.

In six seasons with the Devils, Gomez has 103 goals and 287 assists.

With Gomez's signing, the Devils will have to do some maneuvering to get under the $44 million salary cap by the opening of the season in early October. They recently signed forward defenseman Patrik Elias and defenseman Colin White to multiyear deals totaling $42 million and $18 million, respectively.

They are also responsible for contracts totaling $7.1 million for defenseman Vladimir Malakhov and forward Alexander Mogilny, neither of whom finished the season on the team's NHL roster. Mogilny was demoted to the minor leagues and Malakhov left the team in December.
