Devils need to shape up if they want to be among the elite

After one period, it looked as if the Devils could finally break through. They outplayed the Eastern Conference-leading Buffalo Sabres last Tuesday at the Meadowlands in almost every category, including shots on goal, owning a 15-8 edge. But the Devils emerged from that period deadlocked at zero.

They then made mistakes in the second and early third period, allowing the Sabres to jump out to a 3-0 lead. A small rally would come too late, and the Sabres held on for the 3-2 win.

The loss was the latest specimen of evidence proving that the Devils are just not ready to take the next step and be considered one of the league

a pretty fair article, and an accurate assessment of where they're at with regards to the rest of the league...in December.

actually, it's an ok assessment IMO...the game against the Stars was the second game of the season coming off Carolina win and then travel to Dallas the next night...They played San Jose and Anaheim very tough...take away those two empty netters and they were one goal games...Did they still lose, sure but it's not like they were blown out...As far as the Sabres game Rafalski really crapped the bed on thos two turnovers..

Truth hurts. But the Devils are really taking a step backward since Niedermayer and Stevens left. So far, the team has not taking a step forward as an elite club. Suppose our offense should become the strength with our top 6 (EGG, Langs, Zajac and Parise) so that our defense and Brodeur can take a break. But the opposite rings true. In the East, we're the worst team OFFENSIVELY, but ironically, we're the best team DEFENSIVELY despite losing two key defensemen and obstruction crackdown!!!

The devils are two key players short of being an elite team.

1) A defencman who scores on a regulay basis, who has speed.

2) And another speedy forward who is going to get at least 30 goals a season who can create chances.

Our defence seeems to be holding out , its our offence that needs the spark to win us these games.

The devils are two key players short of being an elite team.

More specifically:

1) A defenceman who scores on a regular basis, who has speed willing to play for the league minimum.

2) And another speedy forward who is going to get at least 30 goals a season who can create chances willing to play for the league minimum.

That article is a pile of crap, all you need to be elite is timing of momentum. Just get hot as the playoffs start. I would rather do that then try to stay elite for a long period of time, pressure mounts.

Hot teams make the finals, elite teams win the cup. The Devils are not elite.
