TORONTO (CP) - Ed Belfour's infected right thumb is worse than first revealed and the goaltender will likely be out of the Toronto Maple Leafs' lineup until at least Saturday.
Belfour, signed during the summer to replace the departed Curtis Joseph, is still unable to firmly grasp a stick with has damaged blocker hand and, though he will be re-examined by doctors Monday, it's expected that he will miss the Maple Leafs' next three games. He was unable to play last Saturday against Ottawa.
``It's not real good. It's pretty weak,'' said Belfour, who kept his thumb hidden in his clinched fist or behind his back during a chat with two reporters Sunday. ``It feels like a broken bone just because of the swelling.''
Belfour's hand began puffing up on the flight home from Pittsburgh on Thursday, after he had played very well in a 33-save 6-0 shutout of the Penguins. He'd cut his thumb after the Maple Leafs' final exhibition game against Tampa Bay when, he says, he nicked it on the eyelet of one of his gloves while he was undressing.
``It was a fluke thing - unbelievable,'' said Belfour. ``It wasn't anything I needed stitches for. Just something I had to bandage up. I've never had anything like this in my whole career or my life.''
Trevor Kidd will start in goal for Toronto on Monday against Pittsburgh and will almost certainly start on the road Tuesday against the New York Rangers and Thursday at home against Phoenix.
