That could be but they ask Credit or Debit, if it were the same why bother asking?

It's the same price to you, the consume,r but it's a different price to the business so they'd prefer one over the other and I've been guided as to what they would prefer at times.

You said you guess they charge debit transactions the same as credit so how is it a different price to the business?

Are you talking about the recent change or before when they had the same price cash/charge?

Do they prefer one method over another at different times?

The profit the business makes is different because the amount the credit card companies take is different between credit and debit purchases. So they charge a cash price and a credit/debit price that is calculated using the higher of the two fees. I forget which one charges higher fees, but let's say it's credit, so the gas station sets its cash price and then sets their credit price by increasing it equal to the amount they would lose if someone pays with credit. This way whether a customer pays cash or credit the gas station makes the same money. Now if someone uses a debit the gas station makes more money because the person will pay the higher credit price but the gas station will be charged a slightly lower fee. Most people don't care if they use debit or credit to make their purchase since the price to the consumer is the same but most opt for credit to avoid the hassle of the pin number. The gas station would prefer debit would be used though as they'll get charged slightly less by the credit card company and make the debit purchased gallon of gasoline more profitable for the gas station than the cash or credit purchase.

This would really be easier for me to show using a nice 3 part chart.

"Saudi Arabia has rejected a plea from President Bush to increase oil production, a top White House aide said today."

It is said that Saudi King kept saying he was unable to clearly hear Bush due to machines being used to cram more money into the Saudi vaults. When asked why he didn't just turn the machines off, King Abdullah responded "Why would we do that? Our gas is only 1 cent a gallon?"
