msweet
The Devils magic number is 1.... in the 2 games left where Pittsburgh does not get 2 and Devils get more than 0 the Devils have the #2 seed (Ottawa could pass NJ on points but it won't matter since OTT is on 2nd place in the NE)... so all we need is 1 more point to win the division and the #2 seed. The most interesting situation is for the Rangers who also need one point (almost) to clinch a playoff spot. However, the play MTL tomorrow night. If Montreal wins in regulation against the Rangers they will be under some heavy pressure last game against Pittsburgh to get a point. The Rangers Miss the playoffs under the following scenario. TB is irrelevant to NYR since TB has 44 wins and will win in a tiebreaker with NYR.. so say TB loses out.. MTL beats NYR 4/5 in regulation TOR beats NYI 4/5 (any 2 points) Pitts beats NYR 4/7 in regulation TOR beats MTL in Overtime The standings will look like (if NYR gets 0 points): 6. MTL 93 (43W) 7. TOR 93 (41W) 8. TB 92 (44W) 9. NYR 92 (41W) The standings will look like (if NYR gets 1 point and TB gets 1 point): 6. TB 93 (44W) 7. MTL 93 (43W) 8. TOR 93 (41W) 8. NYR 93 (41W) It will come down to the 3rd tiebreaker (the season series between NYR and TOR is tied at 2W each.. I don't know what it is) Rangers need 2 points! BlueSkirt
4th tiebreaker is GF/GA of each team for the year. Rags are +25, TOR is -9 so Rags get in. Edited April 4, 2007 by BlueSkirt
emptynet
Actually the Rangers only need 1 point. The season series is Rangers 2 Montreal 1. Even if Montreal beats the Rangers they need to do it by more than 4 goals. A +4 goal win would put them in the lead for the third tie breaker (goals scored in the series). A 3 goal win would put them in a tie, but they would most likely lose the 4th tie breaker (better goals for/against), currently the Rangers are leading that category by 33. The fewer number of games played (superior points percentage). 2. The greater number of games won. 3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing. 4. PeteyNice
You are totally wrong here emprtynet. Montreal has 42 wins already. If they beat the Rangers tomorrow they will have 43 wins and the Rangers won't be able to beat that. The Rangers lost the season series to Toronto. The Leaves have 5 points and the Rangers 4. SatansDevils
I hope the Rangers lose both games vs. Montreal and Pittsburgh in regulation and not make the playoffs! It can happen. Montreal is hot right now and Pittsburgh is trying to get home ice although I think they cannot catch Ottawa for 4th seed if they lose to Ottawa tomorrow night.
