Preparing for the Worst

Would love for it to be Stevens but it won't happen yet. No to Nolan, Hartley and Lemaire.

Not sure who this coach from Jersey is so I will have to do my research on him.

What about Laviolette? Firey young guy.

I don't know, I think Sutter will be back.

I think Lou already has this in place if Sutter quits on us.

No other coaches need apply.

If this happens, I will be organizing a riot outside of the Rock. Feel free to join me if you wish. And for what it's worth, I shot Vanderbeek an e-mail about Haviland.

Scotty has to pay his dues as an assistant first. People here have to get it through their heads that just because the guy was a great player and leader doesn't mean he'll be a good head coach.

Found it. This is from the begining of the 2004-2005, Haviland's first year back. They went on to win the Kelly Cup.

Haviland Comes Home

Accountability and results, that's what new Titans coach Mike Haviland is all about, his aim is not merely to get Trenton back into the ECHL playoffs.

"We want the Kelly Cup, that's our goal and won't change," he said "We started talking about it from day one. We're setting the bar very high and our players know that."...... (goes on a few paragraphs author tells of his success in the league, including being named coach of the year in 03)

"I'm here to help bring them a championship" Haviland said the Titan's core group of vets, including Scott Bertoli, Bryce Cockburn, Chris Pittman, and Vince Williams, as well as goalie Andrew Allen give the team a solid base to build upon (sounds like the Devils). The addition of high scoring forward Rick Kowalsky will help as well.

"This team looks really good on paper.. We've addressed some of the areas that were concerns last year such as as. We went through some stretches where it was tough scoring goals. Obviously you can't win if you don't score. Overall, the team is quicker, our transition will be much quicker and our defense is more mobile. I expect we'll create plenty of scoring chances next season."

What type of athlete does Haviland consider to be his player? I want quickness and mobility - that keeps opponents on their heels," he said I like smart, thinking players who know the game, and can get around the rink and play with an edge Altough he wants to see more scoring, Haviland nevertheless said he's building this years Titans from the goal out- a throwback to AC's strong defense when he was there. ..... (talks of piecing it together) "one good thing I've learned over the years is that good chemistry is the key to winning. (some more typical stuff) (talks about his playing career) (talks of interest has soared in youth hockey in NJ) and he ends talking about his first stint with the titans.

Hope this helps a little.

I don't know about that. Scott Stevens leadership skills are much greater than I think you realize. Scott was not only a great leader and captain but he made the rest of the players accountable. Thats not something we have had out of our coaches in recent years.

Scotty will get instant respect the minute he steps behind that bench. Right now we need a coach thats going to light a fire under thier asses and hold the players responsible for thier lazy, uninspired play. I can think of no one better for the job than Scotty.

I COULD be wrong, but I think a former player who has instant name recognition being behind the bench leading this team as a coach would be a good thing

Bullsh!t.

Your red and black glasses our on....as our half of the board on this one.

People need to get over the "Scott Stevens was god complex" (sorry Pepperkorn)

Just because you could use your own "god - given" skillsets on the ice and lead by example doesn't mean you can motivate others with an entirely different set of strengths.

Don't believe me - see Wayne in Phoenix. Inspird leader, led on the ice = still no coaching success.

And Bingo was his name-o. I love Scotty as much as the next Devils fan, and I think it would be great if he one day got a shot to coach the team... but AFTER he's gained experience as an assistant at the pro level, and has proven he can do the job. There have been countless HOF players across sports that were lousy coaches. I'm not saying Scotty will be a lousy coach... but he has to prove he won't be before I consider him as a viable head coaching candidate for the Devils.

I think Reggie Dunlap would be a good choice, I know he is old and doesn't have much success as a coach but he's all about old time hockey, probably one of the best coaches at motivating his players he really knows how to light a fire under their ass.

give the head coach position to MacLean...he's earned it! I like Sutter, but don't take the job if you dont know what your getting into. We could have had some great stability with him behind the bench, but the guy is home sick. Need a little foresight there Brent!
