I was watching the Isles game last night and for a little over a minute they played 3 on 3 hockey. I can't remember ever seeing that before, maybe once in overtime. Does anyone know how often that occurs?

Very rare, but I remember seeing it during a Devils-Flyers game about 9-10 years ago (I'm guessing). Stevens had a breakaway opportunity (a very strange sight) and couldn't convert. The amount of open ice was so strange to see.

THE NHL MUST LOVE THE DEVILS - from who else? A RANGER fan!
[Mark Messier]: A big, bald attention whore with a stupid Easter Island-lookin face. - from who else? DaneykoIsGod!

Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime?
- Most priceless quote ever posted on a message board.

Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.

It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

Probably no more than a handful of time a season. It was surprising that there were no good chances during the 3 on 3.

I want to say it happened in one of the Devils Cup Finals either in 2000 or 2001. I vaguely remember something like that.

"The Stanley Cup has fallen from the Stars. The new millennium has its first Stanley Cup Champion, and it's the New Jersey Devils." Mike Miller calling the Devils winning the Stanley Cup.

"It goes to the captain and then there are handoffs during a skate around the ice" Mike Emrick as Scott Stevens is being presented the Stanley Cup.

Now this 3 on 3 would be good to have in the OT and some team is bound to score in the 5-minute OT. Have that instead of these dumb shootouts.

That's such a dumb idea. 3 on 3 should only ever happen when penalties make it happen, it shouldn't be artificially created just to increase scoring. Otherwise, why not make overtime 2 on 2 or 1 on 1?

Not dumb at all for OT. Sure the shootouts are smart right? Please...shootouts are dumb.
At least 3 on 3 OT would be more exciting IMO than the useless shootouts.

Yea shootouts are brilliant just like I said.
3 on 3 is almost as stupid. The winner of a hockey game should be decided by playing a hockey game. The 4 on 4 for overtime is already too drastic a change in my opinion. 3 on 3 would be a joke. Why not just play 2 on 2? Or 1 on 1?

The YoungStars game was played in a 3-on-3 format this year AFAIR. And it was a NIGHTMARE. I can't imagine the NHL playing OTs like that. Absolutely no defense, no tactics, nothing. Shootouts suck, too, but 3-on-3 is such a bad idea.

It was really cool, it was just a little weird seeing them have so much open ice in the offensive zone and seeing them fly end to end with little neutral zone play.

"We hit each other with a couple," he said. "But it felt good-- more the part of hitting him that him hitting me. That felt better. But just being in it. It's been a while. It's not something you get to do when you don't play in the NHL and stay out of jail. Usually, that's frowned upon in society. But it's fun to go against a tough guy just to challenge yourself."

"It was a 3-0 call," Bobby Holik said simply, referring to the score at the time. "I think it was the first time ever for the teams I've played for."

"Not for me," he said. "I always try to play well and I always prepare and practice the same way every day whether it's the off-season, training camp or the 52nd game of the season (which it is tonight). That's one thing that's beyond my control as far as three goalies, four goalies and coaching decisions on who plays and who doesn't.

"I like to think that I'm somebody that takes my job seriously and I do those things at a high level. When I do that and practice well and I put in the time and as much extra, the other stuff is beyond my control. I can sleep comfortably at night knowing that I do everything I need to do to help my teammates and to be able to play the way I'm capable of playing when given a chance."

Scoring chances against remain low. Scoring chances for have doubled. It's Sutter hockey, and it's working.

"Sure it's difficult, but you've got to make decisions and Whitey's going to go back in the lineup and someone's going to come out,"

Maybe they should eliminate off-sides in OT! ;) :P

In all seriousness, why don't they switch sides in OT? Bring in the long change factor. I doubt it would make a ginormous difference, but it's worth a shot I guess.

To be fair, you can't use the YoungStars game as a valid example of 3 on 3. Of course there is no defense and tactics, there is absolutely nothing at stake, it's just for fun, and the guys never played with each other before. What were you expecting?

You'd have the same thing that happens now during 4 on 4, if there are 2 penalties called on a team the opposing team gets a 5 on 3, not a 4 on 2.

That said I've seen 3 on 3 a few times over the years, it's pretty bad. There aren't enough passing options so it's man on man defense and it's a skating contest for the most part.

Your unconditional rejection of violence makes you smugly think of yourselves as noble, as enlightened, but in reality it is nothing less than abject moral capitulation to evil. Unconditional rejection of self-defense, because you think its a supposed surrender to violence, leaves you no resort but begging for mercy or offering appeasement.
