American_Psycho
Just if anyone was curious... I just got back from seeing Hostel, the new Eli Roth film I was excited to finally watch. If you are unfamiliar with it, its labeled as a Horror film. The story follows three backpackers that are touring parts of Europe. They stay at different hostels in different cities just trying to have a good time(sex, drugs, etc.). Eventually they get lured to Slovakia, where they are promised to find a hostel that is supposed to be home to tons of hot women. Turns out, this is not the case. Instead, there is a place where people can go to torture/kill people for a price. It's not really a surprise who ends up getting kidnapped and thrown into this little game *cough* the aforementioned backpackers *cough*. That's all I'll give away without major spoilers. I will however comment with some opinions. I was expecting alot more violence/gore, but I was surprised to see that the movie was pretty tame(again, IMO). There were a couple of over the top scenes, that were really sick. Other than that, it seemed like a porn flick. The 1st half of the film was filled with T&A, kind of strange when I went in expecting an all out horror film. The gore they did show definitely pushed the R rating to its limit, but I would have liked to have seen more(the sick bastard that I am ). The torture scenes were kind of short, so I anticipate the DVD will have extra footage(I read that this film even pushed NC-17 before it was cut). Plot was relatively simple, and I didn't exactly like the ending. Ah well, pretty entertaining overall. 7/

CRASHER
hey that's the one Glenn Jacobs... aka .... Kane is starring in isn't it ?? How was he in the movie ??? I know it sounds like a wrestling post and screw it if it is but the character he plays is rather intense and he's had to do some major acting in his time on TV and I was hoping it translated !!! There was a trailer for that movie though, didn't really appeal to me. Not much of a "mindless action film fan" myself

LizDevil30
When I saw the trailers for this it reminded me of the movie "Saw". I didn't see "Saw" and probably won't see this.

The hype it generated was massive, but it was pretty much a lame advertising gimmick. Don't get me wrong, there were a couple of awesome scenes, but the trailer was a build-up for a letdown(again, my opinion). Still, some people found it to be ridiculously gory, so it really depends on the viewer. I will add that Hostel was much gorier than both Saw films combined. Super 17
Actually they only cut a couple seconds from the real version.
devilsfan26
I saw this movie last night. I thought it was very bad. It seemed like they just went around killing everybody. In most movies like this there's usually a way to not get killed. Like in Saw, if they do whatever the guy told them to do, they survive. In Hostel, it's just everyone gets killed for no reason, which made it such a lame movie.
poppadouche
Wanted to see Hostel but we decided to checkout Munich instead. Glad we did because the movie was amazing! One of the best i've seen in years. BTW, here is a coupon for $5 movie tickets at participating Loews throughout January, it's a pdf file loews_pass.pdf
American_Psycho
Hostel was "entertaining" for me, however the other elements of the film were terrible(just the plot in general, cliche things here and there). Roth isn't terribly artistic, but he will become a better director in time. I believe he is set to direct Saw III(heh, yeah I hate the idea of another seqel also ). Oh, and about the "editing" of the movie, I read that it pushed NC-17, but it was on another message board, and hardly reliable. Just something I heard. If in fact only a few seconds were cut, then I probably will skip even renting the DVD. Munich however was excellent. One of the best of '05(I liked Sin City and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang a little more). LA03
One of my friends really wants to go see Hostel---but I'm not so sure I want to see it....maybe I'll give it a try since you said it's not AS gory as they made it out to be. One movie that IS terribly gory and disgusting is High Tension. (It's a french film they stupidly dubbed --they should have just used subtitles IMO--and released here in the summer) On a completely different note. Brokeback Mountain was pretty good. But as a whole, its tame. On another note, I saw "Match Point" today(new Woody Allen film with Scarlett Johansson). Best film I've seen in awhile. Nature's Minister
Hostel was an amazing film. One of the best horror movies of the last decade, for sure, and a welcome change of pace from the Scream series and I Know What You Did... and The Sixth Sense and all the other PG-13 movies designed to frighten prepubescents and old women. Takashi Miike was in it, which was really cool. If you don't know who Takashi Miike is, there's a very good chance that you didn't like this movie. The way Hostel was constructed was very, very similar to the way that Miike's own Audition was constructed: there is the initial lull, and then there is the horror. The plot wasn't anything spectacular, nor was it in the least bit deep. I guess the movie did, halfheartedly, attempt to make a statement, but the statement was pretty shallow. But that wasn't the point of the movie. This was, through-and-through, an exploitation film, and exploitation films aren't the sort of films you go to see and expect to find death playing chess with fvcking Max von Sydow. PS Did anyone else laugh during the eye scene?
Satans Hockey
Hostel was like Euro-Trip meets Saw. It was alright but I only liked the gore scenes.
