The Buffalo organization is playing with insane motivation today as well as heavy hearts tonight: Former member of the French Connection Rick Martin died of a massive heart attack while driving down a road I used to take every day for 3 months on my way to student teaching. This was a game there would not have lost even if they were playing the 1980 Russian team.

I don't see whats depressing about those schedules. All the teams we are in a battle with have a pretty difficult bunch of games coming up. Even when they play each other, it's a pretty negative way of thinking to assume that these will end up being 3 point games. The more likely scenario is that these teams split the wins between each other pretty evenly, which is also a big positive for us.

realistically we need to win 4 of our next 5 to stay in contention. This is possible, but with a couple of tough ones against Wash, Col, and Boston we will need to be better than we have the last 2 or 3 games...

We win 4 of next 5 and we will be right there....

The more I see the teams ahead of us winning, the more I'm starting to believe we need to win out the season. Those other teams don't wanna lose at all.

Our best games have been against the better teams recently. So hopefully that follows suit.

Sabres won today, looks like Craig Anderson decided not to show up. Tomorrow, lets go Lightning.

I dont thnk that is totally the case regarding the teams in front of us. If you look at their records over the last 10 games or so Buffalo has been pretty good at 6 - 2- 2, but Rags have been exactly .500, and Carolina is below .500. and really we only need to beat 2 of the 3 of these teams to get in... So if the Rags and Carolikna continue to chug along at around .500 or so we will or should be OK if we continue to win games and play well...

Not counting the Isles, 6 teams battling for 2 playoff spots is gonna be crazy.

The way I see it, we are two points out of the playoffs right now if all we did was win our games in hand + the game against the rangers. Essentially 11 games to make up 2 points, we can do this.

That makes it sound so easy. But what if say the Rags fall out, and the Canes jump in? There's still far too many variables right now to say we're definitively x number of points out with x number of games in hand.

The past week was good and bad, the bad was the Devils losing. Our expectations were Rangers@76, Sabres@78, Canes@75, Leafs@73 and Devils@70, thus, six points away from 8th. Overall, based on expectations from other teams, this week was good to us, however, we missed our expectations for the week, thus, we can say this week was not good. The positives: we saw Devils playing better in the first period the last two games, similar to when they started their initial run. If they play 60 mins like this, they can beat any team in this league. The negative: Rangers matched their expectation.

Teams ----- GP --- PTS --- Last Week Results

Sabres ---- 69 ---- 76 --- 4/8 points, Beat Bruins/Sens, Lost to Leafs/Pens in REG.

Rangers --- 70 ---- 76 --- 2/4 points, Beat the Sharks in SO

Canes ----- 69 ---- 72 --- 1/6 points, They had a horrible week, please continue.

Leafs ----- 69 ---- 70 --- 3/6 points, OTL to Isles wasn't expected

Devils ---- 68 ---- 68 --- 4/6 points, Loss to Sens

Overall: We gained 1 point on the Leafs, 2 on the Rangers and 3 on the Canes and kept up with the Sabres. The key is too keep gaining points on the overall and we did that again.

Countdown 94 = 26 pts (13-1 or equivalent)

This week is even more important than last week. We look at the possible points, best, expected case.

Teams ----- GP --- BC/EXP - Max Points, Best Case, Expected, Notes

Sabres ---- 72 --- 76/81 -- 6 points, (0) Loss to Canes/Thrashers/Preds, (5) Win over Canes/Thrashers, OTL to Preds

Rangers --- 73 --- 76/80 -- 6 points, (0) Loss to Isles/Canadiens/Pens, (4) Win over Isles, OTL to Pens/Canadiens

Canes ----- 72 --- 74/76 -- 6 points, (2) Win over Sabres, Loss to Leafs/Isles, (4) 2 OTLs to Sabres/Leafs, Win over Isles

Leafs ----- 73 --- 72/76 -- 8 points, (2) Loss to Lightning/Panthers/Bruins, Win over Canes, (6) OTL Lightning/Bruins, Win over Canes/Panthers

Devils ---- 72 --- 76/75 -- 8 points, Devils don't have much of a choice but to win all 4 this week.

Countdown 94 = 18 pts (9-1 or equivalent)

Expectations: Devils could possibly close the gap by a minimum 2 points by winning all their games. However, the Caps/Thrashers/BlueJackets pose a significant challenge. Caps are on a roll, Thrashers/BlueJackets are in the hunt and won't budge easily. The Sens are also not to be taken lightly. The last two games, Devils started showing flashes of what made them brilliant at the beginning of this Dream Run. If they can get back that composure for 60 mins in the next two games vs Thrashers/Sens, I can safely say we can beat the Caps/BlueJackets and be well on our way for a playoff run. The Rangers most likely won't hit 80 points, but the win over the Sharks coupled with the Sabres passing them on the standings may give them a new boost of confidence and desperation. The Canes look like they are buckling under the pressure and heavily depend on Cam Ward to carry them into the playoffs. Leafs have a tough week ahead of them playing 3 above .500 teams. The amazing scenario, the Devils can very well pass the Thrashers, Leafs and Canes in this week and we could be looking at a totally new playoff picture heading into next week. Even perhaps pass the Rangers if they lose the next three against tough teams. Isles/Pens don't like the Rangers and Canadiens are playing very good hockey. Lets go Devils.

I accounted for all teams in my scenario. We would tie Atl and TOR with the game in hand win but have the first tie breaker, and we would be 2 points behind the Canes.

Your week in scoreboard watching:

Going in:

7 Buffalo 69 GP, 76 points

8 Rangers 70 GP, 76 points

-------

9 Carolina 69 GP, 72 points

10 Toronto 69 GP, 70 points

11 Atlanta 69 GP, 70 points

12 Devils 68 GP, 68 points

8 points out of two spots, one of those spots we have two games in hand

Also barely out of 10th place if we would win our game in hand.

Monday:

Tampa @ Toronto

Only game of importance and obviously want Tampa to take it

Tuesday:

Atlanta @ Devils

Islanders @ Rangers

Carolina @ Buffalo

Definitely Islanders, but second game is tough. At this point in time, I think just hoping the game doesn't go to OT is best. If the Sabres win it, we hope they win the rest of the matchups we need and take the 7th seed. If Carolina wins it, we hope all 3 teams will stay around the same points and we can slip by. Tough to say really whats best since we are so close to having control of our own destiny versus the Rangers.

Wednesday:

Toronto @ Carolina

Toronto easily, especially if the Canes win the night before

Thursday:

Flyers @ Atlanta

Devils @ Ottawa

Toronto @ Florida

All straight-forward.

Friday:

Washington @ Devils

Montreal @ Rangers

Islanders @ Carolina

Samsies.

Saturday:

Atlanta @ Buffalo

Boston @ Toronto

Easy easy

Sunday:

Rangers @ Pittsburgh

Devils @ Columbus

Hopefully Pens can take care of business on NBC.

Best case scenario

Gave Buffalo the head to head against Carolina

7 Buffalo 71 GP, 78 points

8 Devils 72 GP, 76 points

-------

9 Rangers 73 GP, 76 points

9 Carolina 72 GP, 72 points

10 Toronto 73 GP, 72 points

11 Atlanta 72 GP, 72 points

Pretty crazy that we can actually be IN the playoffs at the end of this week, of course highly unlikely but just to be in this position is nuts.

Everyone is playing stiff competition this week, so if we keep winning and the Islanders, Habs and Penguins help us out.. this could be a HUGE week.
