DEVS MOUTH OFF - BUT ISLES HAVE LAST WORD

In what turned into a slick move, the Islanders yesterday reacquired 26-year-old defenseman Freddy Meyer IV from the Coyotes on re-entry waivers, meaning the Coyotes will play half of his remaining $550G salary and assume that half of his remaining salary-cap liability.

Phoenix claimed him from the Islanders earlier this season, sent him down and tried to recall him. He played five games with Phoenix and eight with farm San Antonio. Since waiver priority works in reverse of current standings since Nov. 1, the Devils passed on the chance to pick him up. ...

Interesting...

I love these little rules in the CBA that come up in times like these. I wonder what would happen if Phoenix was at the max and had no cap room left, what would they do then since this acquisition would put them over the top?

you are only eligible to be claimed off of entry waivers if a team tries to re-call you from the minors. In this example Phoenix wanted to call up Meyer, but got essentially blocked by the islanders. Since the coyotes were intending to call him up and pay him his full salary under the cap, there is no way they could have attempted a call up if 50% of that salary was going to put them over the cap. So basically the situation you are talking about isnt possible.

It is possible to waste lots of cap space with re-entry waivers though. Personally, I think the whole re-entry half salary thing is ridiculous. It keeps people in the minors that could have gotten a call up. Just make it like regular waivers where the team claiming takes on the rights and the full salary. Does anyone know of the reason behind having the re-entry rule in the CBA?

I believe the NHLPA was worried about veterans being shuffled to and from the minors a lot due to salary cap issues so they wanted to have a reason for teams to not send veterans to the minors in the first place if they ever planned to use them again.

Brodeur, however, has 18 shootout victories among his total, which would have gone down as ties for Roy.

(N)Єverson just has to throw that in there... What a little bitch

Of course he does... But hey, it's not like Roy had an ENTIRE season in his prime locked out coming off back to back Vezinas.

The way I see it the shootout victories will make up for the wins Brodeur would have had if the 04-05 season existed.
