MOSCOW (Reuters) - New York Rangers (news) Russian center Roman Lyashenko has been found dead in his hotel room while vacationing in Turkey, ice hockey officials said Monday.

He was 24.

"He was on holiday in Turkey with his mother and sister," Yuri Lukin, general manager of Russian champions Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, Lyashenko's former club, told Reuters.

"On Sunday morning, they opened his room and found him dead. The cause of his death has not yet been established."

Lyashenko joined the Dallas Stars (news) of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1999 after he captained the Russians to the gold medal at the world junior championships earlier that year.

He was a regular player with Dallas in his first two seasons, but saw limited action after being dealt to the Rangers in 2001. Regarded as a good two-way forward, Lyashenko only played two games last season and 15 the year before.

Lyashenko's death is the latest tragedy to hit Russian ice hockey this year.

Lyashenko's former team mate Lokomotiv Yaroslav forward Vladimir Antipov was injured and his wife died in a car crash last month.

In May, Igor Grigorenko, 20, the Detroit Red Wings (news)' first pick in the 2001 NHL entry draft and another of Lyashenko's former team mates, broke his leg in two places and suffered concussion in a car crash in his home town of Togliatti.

In January, Lokomotiv coach Alexei Traseukh was shot dead in his apartment in Yaroslavl.

russian mob?

Don't know. An idiot over on the ESPN boards is screaming about how it was stupid of Lyashenko to vacation in Turkey - as if it mattered which country he was in when he died in his sleep.

Where was it reported he died in his sleep?

Sorry. When someone is found dead in their hotel room with no report of foul play it is my reflex action to think died in their sleep.

Those Russians got some shaky s**t going on. Too many athletes have died for something not to be wrong. I do business with them from time to time in NYC. The quietest phones in the NYPD are in the precincts in Brighton Beach. They don' need no steenkin' coppers!

Exactly, I think this may be one of those classic, "sleepin' wit da fishies" (thanks z ;) ) type deaths.

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - New York Rangers forward Roman Lyashenko was found dead in a hotel room while vacationing in Turkey.

The Rangers said Monday that the cause of death wasn't immediately known. However, Turkey's Anatolia news agency reported it was a suicide.

Yuri Koritskiy, a Russian consular official, said the 24-year-old hockey player had been with his mother and sister in Antalya, a southern Mediterranean resort province popular with Russian and other European tourists. He said Lyashenko died Saturday but would not provide any other details.

The Anatolia news agency said Lyashenko apparently hanged himself with his belt in his hotel room.

The consulate was making preparations to send the body back to Russia this week, Koritskiy said.

Lyashenko played regularly with the Dallas Stars his first two seasons in the NHL, then was traded to the New York Rangers late in the 2001-02 season. Last season, the forward played one game with New York, spending the year with Hartford for the American Hockey League, where he had 23 goals and 35 assists.

``Roman was a quality individual who had a positive impact on everyone he touched, both on and off the ice,'' said Glen Sather, the Rangers' president, general manager and coach.

In 138 NHL games, Lyashenko had 14 goals and nine assists. The Russian was selected by Dallas in the second round of the 1997 NHL entry draft.
