Elias Sports Bureau
Why do broadcasters from the visiting team insist on calling Jiri BYE-CHECK even after a goal is announced by his home announcer that calls him BEE-SEK. Do they think they know better than the home team how his name is pronounced?? Just one of those tiny things that is a slight irritant. Blackjack
Actually, I used to call him Bi sek, then I heard him called Bi check a number of times on tv, so I started doing it to. Which way is right?
Rock
Doc Emerick in the past published a pronunciation guide for all the foreign names. I assume he still does, I guess either the broadcasters don't read it or Bob Arsensa(sp?) didn't.
Nieuwy25
I saw a list of his pronunciation guide somewhere on the net. NHL.com maybe? Anyway, he provides a real service to announcers everywhere, if they're paying attention.
Elias Sports Bureau
I believe the Devils would know how it is pronounced so I'm sure it's Bee-sek. While I'm asking why, I'm trying to figure out why my avatar that was changed yesterday after this current one was physically discarded somehow mysteriously changed back to this one, without me touching it. And I spent one day without an avatar altogether while I was trying to make the new one work... Weird.
Risky
Gremlins! And it's "bee-sek"
Elias Sports Bureau
Now the other avatar's back. And I'm not even going to avatar settings... Twilight zone time.
Devils731
I have a Czech journalist who sits next to me at some of the games and he tells me the name is pronounced "b-check" -Scott
Nieuwy25
That's what I would have thought. That's consistent with other Czech players, such as Spacek, Kloucek, Rucinsky, etc. But I guess ultimately you go with what the player tells you. Elias Sports Bureau
Yep, it seems likeliest that it would sound like Czech. But the Devils announcers knows how to pronounce their players' names. Maybe it's a Slovak thing, though.
MaddDog
Well, I used to assume it was "B-check" when Jiri was first on the Rats but then our radio guy (Hennessy at the time) used to call him "Bee-sek" so I'm inclined to think it's the 2nd one??? Of course, one could always ask Jiri to his face but I'm not in a position to meet him anytime soon - is anyone else ?
sammyk
But the Devils announcers knows how to pronounce their players' names. Why is this assumed? Lots of announcers have no idea how to pronounce names, why would the Devils announcers be the exception?
StarDew
Dear Mr. Rock and Ms. NJDev25, Could one of you be so kind as to please forward the location of this guide to one Mr. Gary Thorne c/o ESPN. I have been searching in vain for such a publication. I will forever be in your debt for such a kindness. Thank you very much, G. T.

Gary must have misplaced his, I believe the hockey broadcasters get a new edition every year. It has a phonetic guide for all the players, including the prospects. SBT
Thorne is constantly getting his goalies mixed up.

Nieuwy25
Why is this assumed? Lots of announcers have no idea how to pronounce names, why would the Devils announcers be the exception? Because Doc literally "wrote the book" on the pronunciation of players' names that is circulated throughout the league.

And then Doc and Chico secondarily. If his name was pronounced wrong, I'm sure they'd get the memo.
