TD you are way off about saying NY/TX is the same as Finland/Spain. The same movies/music is released and heard in NY and TX. Top 40 in NY is the same Top 40 in TX. Sure there are added genres in both areas but in general it is the same. The same movies are released in TX as they are in NY. You can watch the same news channels in TX as you do in NY. Of course local news will be different but hell local news in one part of Finland is likely different from another part.

So now to compare it to Finland/Spain. You are likely not to hear the same Top 40 Finnish music on Spanish radio stations and vice versa. You are likely not to see Spanish movies released in Finland and the news most certainly not be the same.

As different as TX and NY may be they are still in the same country.

Oh yah, and why do you keep bringing up the "IM convo posting on a hockey board"? He posted it in the OFF TOPIC section. Why aren't you bitching about posting about politics on a hockey board? No one is posting these things in the hockey section.

In your hippie canadian fantasy land (joke, lets not get all crazy)

Seriously though, in the system in which we function, which is the only one we have, Nader gave Bush the election, plain and simple. Nader got the far left, who otherwise wouldve voted Democrat. So he stole the election. If you voted for him you were duped.

Our government IS a business. It was set up that way, and its still run that way. In the words of Dennis Miller...I dont want to get off on a rant here, but we are all the employees of the American government, namely, the Federal Reserve, who taxes us, profits off of us, and is a private BUSINESS. .....blech

And Im just jealous that Canada isnt run by psychotic evangelist business tycoons...

Back to the "European" views of Americans.

I have always been fascinated by American culture, but have never had the chance to visit, I have always been worried the majority of Americans fit their stereotype.

I always thought that the stereotype of Americans as loud an annoying and in you face was false, and i still pray that it is. But my fears were heightened in Greece this year when i was on a field trip. Cruise ships regularly dock where we were staying, and a lot of Americans came on shore.

I was in a sports bar watching Chelsea play Bolton in the EPL in what was the most important game of the season. There was an American man and his wife behind me, watching the game, he was watching and trying to explain to his wife what was happening, and why he loves "Manchester FC". The guy made comments all through the game which were bull$hit , he didn

I'm 110% agree with my TravisZajac but one more time, Sammyk scores

There are a$$holes everywhere and they seem to like to travel

I feel ashame when I saw some citizen of paris (soooo different from other place in France) be totally jerk with tourist as I get bored really quick when I speak about any kind of think with a "american" and all the time heard about the USA superiority.

Europe are not higher coz they got more history & culture background

USA are not higher coz they got bigger guns and more money in the bank...

French got a lot (and i say a Looooooot) of default... I can't argue about it. So I'm.

French loves so much France that stupid (very old) rivalry still effective after all these years. Damn ! Explain to me why I MUST hate England people coz i'm French ? Boring.

French are proud of their culture (food, beautiful city, movie - I know I know..., history)... And when they see people come to us and say veryyyy loud "USA ! NUMBER OUANE ! You're nothing without us ! NOOOOTHING ! Without us, you will have speak german ! Ahahahah"... ahem.. they tend to be... angry.

I'm pretty sure French people doesn't HATE USA or americans... but it's classic with us. When we see a HUGE MOUTH we become sarcastic and put him down as much as possible. It's stupid... it's a speciality from a very proud people (Watch spain with Portugese, german with turkish, Russian with old satellite country.... and of course USA with the world)

USA is a incredible machine ! I'm really impress'when I think about that... but it's not a country with my mentality. And haters must understand that we can think otherwise... and be proud of it.

To resume, Yes some french are sometimes full of crap but as the same level of some americans.

What a wonderful ending for my tales.

(and of course, sorry for my horrible "broken english" but Hey ! I do my best.. see... good french... )

In regards to the IM thing....... because he deserves to be drilled about it?

And I never said NY/TX are like Spain and Finland

I said that they might as well be on different continents because the culture is completely different in pretty much everyway...Youre right that we have a lot of the same music, and the same tv. Other than that, not much at all. You look at an Italian from Brooklyn and then an Anglo from Houston and tell me they are the same.

well, I'd say i do grasp it :)

however, i tend to get frustrated arguing with people that are telling me i'm wrong without backing it up with why (example, languages, isn't english (and spanish) major languages in both places? politics, will both places not chose between the same candidates, in the 80s, wasn't people from both places heavily affected by the emergence of mtv?)

... not that you are dumb or anything

Because Im from New Jersey, which is near NYC....There are people from the south that I can barely understand. And vice-versa. So the English spoken in Texas or Alabama is about as different from the English spoken in New York that you could get.

People from Texas and people from NJ do not vote for the same candidates...not even close. If a senator from Massachusetts ran for Senate in Texas, he would get about 5 percent of the vote, and vice-versa.

You see what Im saying? Not that youre stupid. >:)

so you are trying to compare having different accents with people talking languages from different language families.

are you saying that in the last election the 2 candidates for the presidency (in both tx and ny) was not kerry and gwb?

(why am i arguing this... nvmnd)

Youre the one that made that comparison, not me. I simply said it may as well be another country. I can understand British, Candian, and Irish people better than I can understand southerners.

Youve never been to New York, and youve never been to Texas. So I dont expect you to understand the difference

Yah but you're wrong. My point was that as different as NY/TX are they are nowhere near as different as Finland and Spain. You may not understand when a Texas speaks (perhaps that's your own deficiency) but they are still speaking English. With Spain and Finland the languages are completely different. They don't even come close. As for comparing an Italian from Brooklyn and an Anglo from Houston, well I'm sure someone from the North of Finland is different from the South of Finland. Those are just local differences. Hell, why choose TX? Folks from PA are likely to vote for a different candidate than the folks from NJ.
Youve never been to New York, and youve never been to Texas. So I dont expect you to understand the difference
How do you know this? From what I understand Swede is well traveled.

It appears you're the one smoking something.

Regardless of differences those in NJ and TX are still Americans! They still have a lot in common with each other compared to those in Spain and Finland. It is simply not a good analogy. Why is this so hard to understand?

You compared the differences between NJ and TX are along the lines of differences between Spain and Finland (or any other two countries) and that is simply not true.

Are you really this daft? I NEVER MADE THAT COMPARISON.

I didnt say it was like Spain and Finland - go back and read the thread.

Here is how you "corrected" Swede's post:

well not by a mile if you compare.

you still get influenced by the same news, same music - wrong, same movies, same politics - wrong . also you do speak the same language(s) andddd wrong. whereas a finn would be hard pressed to know anything about what is popular and how life is in greece

What movies in Texas are different than NY? What music in Texas is not available in NY? What political parties are in TX that are not in NY? What language do they speak in Texas that NYers don't understand?

Even if you didn't literally make the comparison your certainly implying it!

What movies in Texas are different than NY? Never said the movies were different. What music in Texas is not available in NY? Its not about availability, its about taste. What political parties are in TX that are not in NY? You all vote Republican. What language do they speak in Texas that NYers don't understand?Your accents repulse us.

Even if you didn't literally make the comparison your certainly implying it!

How did I imply it was anything like Spain and Sweden or whatever the eff it was....

Don't you get it? Which two countries doesn't matter.

When Swede complained about all Europeans getting lumped together even though Europe consists of many countries that are vastly different from one another. You, citing a similar situation in the United States, said that NYers and Texans get lumped together too as if it were the same thing as say, for example, Spain and Finland. It could be Germany and Italy, or Greece and France, it doesn't matter which combo you choose, you can't compare that to NYers and Texas getting lumped together because they aren't different countries even if the Texas Tourism Department may want you to think otherwise.

Not about availability but taste? Not everyone down here listens to country. Hell, in Austin I couldn't even tell you what the country station was.

Not everyone in Texas votes Republican.

The accent is overblown. It's not different than the rest of the south and I'm sure the feelings are mutual about northeast accents.

Im done with this retarded argument.

You keep telling me i said it was like Finland and Spain, I NEVER EFFFFFING SAID THAT

Texas is like a different country compared to NJ. It is. Ask anyone from NJ. This isnt debatable.

Sammy, while I would not put it as strongly as TD, I believe we are all part of the same country, when last I looked, everyone was still part of the same nation, there are certain parts of this country I would not wish to live in because I would not be comfortable there. But I don't consider them not part of the same country. However, when I was working in Charlotte in the late 1980s I was pretty much told in no uncertain terms that some people considered people in NY and the Northeast, where I am from, no better than foreigners or traitors because they consider us godless, evil and trying to sell them out to the communists - this was still the 1980s, I'm sure now it would be Osama bin Laden - (those are the Jews, btw, who were trying to sell them out, and their allies the socialists who were everyone in Manhattan). I'm not saying it's everyone. Just some people. So please don't pretend that everyone considers us one nation. Because they don't. I had to listen to it for an entire summer. Maybe it's changed since then. But it was ugly.

Can you not read? I told you that it doesn't matter which countries are used as an example. I never denied things are different between NJ and TX, I just said they are not as drastically different as they between two actual countries, Finland and Spain were just EXAMPLES, it doesn't matter if YOU mentioned them or not.

Sue, I have no doubt that is true and I'm sure that happens in other areas too but do you believe that all of SC feels that way? Do those people represent the entire state, or the entire south? There are likely people that feel like that in every state. I'd bet it happens in other countries too.
