Nets having problems GIVING AWAY tickets

Not sure if this game will be telecast on one of the NBA TV outlets. but on Saturday afternoon a member of the NJ Nets sales "force" was walking down Washington Street in Hoboken with a stack of game tickets asking people if they wanted FREE Tickets for this weeks games against Lebron James team.

I think he got very frustrated as I saw him ask about 10 guys who all turned them down. I saw him an hour later just exasperated. Not sure if he they are doing this town, by town, but it was pretty sad.

They give my HS free tickets all the time.. the first game our school has tickets for is vs CLE tomorrow.. i was gonna go but you have to take a school bus to the game, which sucks, I rather just go with a friend in his car and not on a school bus.. which also leaves 1 hour AFTER the game, UGH

Haha a marketing guy from the Nets came to give a speech in my sport marketing class last week. In the beginning he told us where he went to school and stuff. Then at the end he gave away a pair of tickets to the first person to say where he went to grad school. I guess they are trying anything they can to give these things away.

'least the Devs aren't THIS pathetic...

are we?

Fortunately, no. For the amount of press that the NBA gets by comparison to the NHL these tickets should sell themselves. I am not sure why Sports Editors feel compelled to promote the NBA.

But selling discounted seat and giving them away are two different things.

no, the nets are more pathetic.

but they also have uncertainty about where the team is going (it's been moving to brooklyn for what, 5 years now?), and have lost almost all of their recognizable faces.

They didn't lose anyone, they traded them. RJ, Kidd, K-Mart (awhile ago) next will definitely be VC.. But the team is rebuilding to get $$ room to sign Lebron Jame$ (or other notable guys like D-Wade in 2010 free agency)..

Yep. And it all started when they traded Kenyon Martin to the Nuggets. That guy meant so much to that franchise. To me, at least. Hasn't been the same since.

i know they traded them. that isn't the point. no one's coming out to see devin harris and yi jianlan.

whenever i look at a nets game on TV, the attendance is the same as the devils - lots of empty seats all around the arena. but i think the nets have been more committed to giving tickets away than the devils. they also way overcharge for tickets that they shouldn't - i went to a game with 'VIP' tickets, which were $200 (obv i went for free) - this entailed access to a 'VIP lounge' under the seats which was so embarrassingly awful, i've never felt less important as a very important person - nowhere to sit down, a choice of food between like chicken fingers and hot dogs and some vegetarian option, and a poorly stocked bar. like, it was unequivocally terrible, if i brought some corporate client there i'd be mortified.

Because nobody cares about going to sporting events in NJ. This team should move asap, im not sure Brookyln would be the answer, but im sure they will get much better crowds there..

and the nets have lost their competitive edge; they aren't a team expected to be one of the best in the east like they have been 2002-2007-ish era. Now they are expected to be worse than the Knicks (dont agree to that though). And then still playing in the old CAA just makes things even more boring for the fans.

The only way the Nets sell out a game is if they reach the EC Finals, possibly.. not even sure if they could sell that out.. but anyway thats probably not going to happen until 2010 season, at the earliest.

The Nets attendance is always announced in a respectable range (15,000ish). Are they horribly inflating numbers? How does a Net game look like compared to an old Devils game at CAA for those who follow basketball?

In watching the hightlights it looks like they draw closer to 6,000 most nights, regardless of what is announced. There was an article in the NY Times a few weeks ago saying how the NETS hired a company to fill seats for big games.

That's awful

Would Brooklyn make all that big a difference? Would Newark?

I think the tri state area is just not all that big on basketball. It has room for 1 team only, the Knicks...and even that's a massive bandwagon following.

The Nets could draw well here but 3 things would have to happen,

A. Made a decision about where they are going make a commitment to NJ, since they announced they were moving to Brooklyn, I'd say 1/3 of the fanbase left.

B. Move to a nicer arena (cough cough)

C. Start winning again.

Right now the Prudential Center makes the most sense, what's the point of them moving any deeper into Knicks country?

I'm with ya on that brother. But Jay-Z wants to move the team to Brooklyn, even though its not going to happen. Just stay in NJ.

EDIT: IIRC, this summer there were rumors about JVB buying the team and moving them to Newark. Would work out great from his standpoint, 82 guranteed events + playoffs just from BB and Hockey. And Seton Hall, almost forgot them too.

B. Move to a nicer arena (cough cough) Eh I rather have the Pru-Center to just the Devils.. but if we have to..

C. Start winning again. doubt it will happen anytime soon, 2010 earliest. Unless they pull a Tampa Bay Rays..

there's plenty of room for a 2nd basketball team around here, the problem was that the nets were so bad for so many years they drove too many fans to the knicks, and their move from long island didn't help either.

the move to brooklyn will work for a little bit i imagine, but who are these people who're going to come see them there? long islanders, i guess? brooklyn is just not 'other' enough to siphon fans away from the knicks. it's not like brooklyn is full of basketball fans who can afford tickets.

best thing for everyone is to go to newark - the devils benefit because it means those bars and restaurants that are going to be near-empty for 320 nights of the year get another 41 dates. still, it might be too late for the nets in new jersey though, that ship just might've sailed.

They have a couple of players that should be around for a long time. Devin Harris looks like the real deal already, Carter alone will keep the team decent and hopefully we get a great return at the deadline from a desperate team. Not a big Yi fan but he is young also. Lopez, Boone, Anderson, and Williams hopefully get better.

We need to draft good and pick up a free agent in 2010 as you said.

Funny thing is, I would have gone if they gave me free tickets, but this is the first I'm hearing of all of this. Oh well.

I've said it many times before and I'll say it once more, I really believe that the Nets will be playing in Newark in the next five years, it just makes too much sense for everyone involved. The Brooklyn idea is nice and all, but the public never really wanted it and the economy dictates now more than ever that it shouldn't happen. And they can't just stay in the Meadowlands and play in a giant shopping mall.

If I bought the Nets I would completely rebrand them as soon as I felt I had a decent roster. New name, etc... It wouldn't make any sense to do that while the team stinks though.
