Jason Spezza has a new seven-year contract extension worth $49 million with the Ottawa Senators.

Spezza will get $8 million in each of the first five years of the contract and $5 million and $4 million, respectively, in the final two years. The cap hit will be $7 million per year for the Senators.

These Sens' players really love Ottawa because that is 4 guys in the last 6-8 months who have taken long term contracts way under their market value. The fact that he will be making 5 million and then 4 million in the final two years is absolutely ridiculous.

I don't see that as being "way under market value". Around $7M is pretty much the going rate for top end players. The cap hit is $7M every year no matter what the actual value is. Maybe you could make the case that he would have gotten $8M on the open market but that isn't a huge difference. And as an RFA his leverage is limited. It's not like he took a 7 year, 30M deal or something.

I think this shows that it is going to be very hard to poach other teams best players.

Most teams will lock them up in long-term contracts now, it's just too cost-effective versus going the free agent route.

The only downside I can see is if your star player fades faster than you expected. By midseason we may be confronted with that with Elias, although I do not think he is done.

Okay. How much is Ottawa's top line cost vs Tampa's top line cost?

Ottawas first Line value is $15.191 Million between Heatly, spezza, and Alfredsson

and Tampa Bay first line Value is $20.967 Million between Vinny, St. Louis, and Richards

this numbers are all just for this year. I did not feel like doing all the math to find out total salaries but is someone wants to the link is www.nhlnumbers.com

That can't be right. That means that Heatley/Spezza/Alfredson make $5M per year on average.

Okay. I guess I should have specified. What are their salaries NEXT year. Which will be $20M NEXT year according to your link. Still less than TB because Alfredson is taking it up the rear (maybe he likes that).

With the signings of Heatley and Spezza, barring injuries, the Sens are set for a long time. A good move by their management team to lock these guys up long term.

They'll keep Meszaros...but Redden's replacement is rising to the challenge in the AHL (ie Brian Lee). If Redden will waive his NTC he could be traded to another semi-contender, if he looking for bucks...have fun in Phoenix! Keeping Kelly (UFA), to me at least is uber important, he is HUGE on the PK, and last year showed he is capable of filling in on the top line. Eaves...now he is a tough one, I love his enthusiasm, but really I just don't think he can produce at a high enough level, and he doesn't bring much else to the game....I'd love to see him stay, but he needs to find his niche. Vermette is also RFA......and quietly, he is having a solid year so far, but I am not sure the staff want it to be so quiet.

Nice job Sens, see, it IS possible to get your important players locked up before UFA, got that Darcy?

Guess Darcy is now happy with his average Buffalo Sabres hockey team that I can barely watch anymore because they have no fire, passion, pazazz, etc...

Nice job Murray.. You traded away Schaffer, who I thought at 2.1millions was overpaid for a Decent 3rd line Sean Donovhan... And now, you just signed Jason Spezza+Dany Heatley..

Humm.. With Brian Lee coming from the AHL".. I'd definately say that Redden is a goner after this season.Good job Ottawa... You just locked your pieces for a shot at a Stanley cup, for the next 6years :)
