Day 1 Scores

Russia defeated Denmark 3-2 (SO)

USA defeated Finland 2-1 (SO)

Sweden defeated Czech Republic 5-2

Canada defeated Slovakia 8-0

It seemed like Wood started out as 4LW before being moved to the extra forward position. No big deal though, he seemed like he belonged in his limited time which is a welcome sight now that he's facing real competition. I see he's now listed at 6'1, 194 so he seems to be filling out nicely. As you mentioned his skating seems strong.

His skating is definitely a ++ attribute. He appeared to have decent stick skills. I'd like to see what he could do if given more significant time on a higher line. The 4th line didn't look bad, but Finland is a good team and they seemed to struggle maintaining any pressure in the offensive zone against them so Wood didn't get many opportunities to shine.

Maybe when they play games against the weaker teams in their group in Slovakia and Germany, we'll get a better look at his offensive skills.

What are you complaining about? Every year Canada has a powerhouse team. If NHL teams let the guys you want go to the WJC, it would be like cheering for a team of adults playing against 8 year olds. It'd be no real victory when you're THAT much better than every other team.

Saying "hey we had a powerhouse but didnt win" is not that fun.We havent won since 2009, other teams are getting stronger and stronger every year

It may not be fun, but if every eligible Candian player that's in the NHL right now went, there wouldn't be a point to even holding the tournament. Might as well just give Canada the gold and have the tournament decide who gets silver and bronze.

At least in the Olympics you have every over 18 player from each country to choose from and that gives a few countries a chance, but with the tournament being limited to under 20 players and it really being just ages 17-19 with a 16 year old sprinkled in on a rare occasion, there's not a large enough talent pool for most countries to draw from in order to be competitive.

Plus, it's pretty damn fun for the rest of us to see the clearly more talented than everyone else Canadian team melt down against a team a better coached team that selected players based on the roles they'd play instead of just pure skill.

Remind me again, when was the last time you guys won a medal? Can't remember the last time you managed gold either.

All the Canadian players were available in 2012-13 and they still lost.  Canada is really good but it's a short tournament and anything can happen in a short tournament.

International hockey is where SD's inner Habs fan comes out.

Dude you can call me names, make fun of my mom, joke about me being adopted, laugh at my dead friends / dogs... But inner habs fan? you went too far with that one. Too far. Low blow. :P

Serious question from an American who doesn't give a sh!t about international hockey- do Canadians really get pumped about winning tournaments in hockey? I mean, they would probably win if you combined every other country combined (or at least it would be a very close game/series). Seems a little silly to be THAT proud of winning these things

Dude, Canada's a country of 35 million people. To make that point a little clearer, the whole country's population is less than that of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania combined. For them to win at anything international on a regular basis should be a source of pride, regardless of whether or not it is their unofficial national sport (lacrosse is the official one). You come from a country with 10 times the population of Canada and we go crazy over anything we win.

Total population doesn't mean anything here; hockey participation does.

According to this link , there are 115,000 more Canadians that play hockey. You also have to factor that hockey is still pretty new in states like: California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, NC, Virginia have little-no history of the sport and aren't producing elite players because of bad development programs. I bet a lot of Canadian ex-pats are driving numbers up as well

Wow! Awesome post!! Go Canada!!

USA-RUS just finished. Undisciplined USA team, all those penalties gave momentum to RUS and cost them the game.

Hockey participation might matter more on a statistical odds for winning, but from a national pride level it means squat. At the point of pride you've got to look where you stack up in terms of country size, because what you're referring to is a measure of the country's dedication to a given sport which should by no means diminish the amount of pride they take in winning at it. It's taken as understood that in order to succeed at a sport one must play it.
