Elias26
Link NOTE: THE OLYMPIC TRADE FREEZE IS 3 PM EST FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10th, 2006 AND RUNS UNTIL 11:50 PM SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27th. THE TRADE DEADLINE IS MARCH 9th, 2006. 07 FEBRUARY 2006. **WAIVER ALERT!** VARIOUS SOURCES OUT OF EDMONTON REPORTED LAST NIGHT THE OILERS HAVE PLACED GOALTENDER TY CONKLIN ON WAIVERS. Spector's Note: My thanks to everyone who sent this in. Could this be the prelude to Kevin Lowe bringing in an experienced starter? After Jussi Markkanen was pulled in last night's game, it's possible. THE LATEST ON KEITH PRIMEAU. CAMDEN COURIER-POST: Chuck Gormley reports Philadelphia Flyers captain Keith Primeau was in Toronto Monday to get the final word on if he'll be able to return to the club this season. Primeau is still recovering from post-concussion symptoms and has been given a deadline of February 27th by Flyers GM Bob Clarke, who'll have to pursue a replacement for Primeau if he's still unable to go by then. Although Clarke recently acquired centre Petr Nedved and Peter Forsberg is due to return from injury, he wants Primeau's leadership to bolster his club's performance. Spector's Note: Given the depth at the center position, Clarke probably won't be seeking another one, but rather a veteran forward with leadership skills. That might stoke the "Mark Recchi back to Philly" rumours, but it remains to be seen who Clarke has in mind. POTENTIAL SUITORS FOR WILD PLAYERS. ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS: Brian Murphy reported that while most of the trade talk swirling about the Minnesota Wild is focuses on goalies Dwayne Roloson and Manny Fernandez, reality is most teams are more interested in the Wild's pending free agent blueliners. That list includes Willie Mitchell, Filip Kuba, Andrei Zyuzin and Daniel Tjarnqvist. Murphy lists the Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche as the top suitors, as those clubs are seeking short-term replacement for injured blueline regulars. Spector's Note: Mitchell is the most coveted of the Wild free agent blueline quartet but I suspect Doug Risebrough intends to retain him as well as Kuba. CAPITALS PONDER FRIESEN'S FUTURE. WASHINGTON POST: Tarik El-Bashir reports Capitals management are wondering how or if forward Jeff Friesen fits into their plans. It was thought he would bolster their offence when he was acquired earlier in the season but injury and limit production have them pondering if he remains part of their future or if he should be shopped for a draft pick at the trade deadline. Spector's Note: Friesen has been a valuable two-way forward in the past, particularly during the NJ Devils 2003 Cup run. A contender seeking depth up front might consider him as a potential option by the deadline. 06 FEBRUARY 2006. RECCHI HOPES TO REMAIN A PENGUIN. PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Karen Price reports Penguins forward Mark Recchi, who has a $2.28 million option on his contract for next season, is hoping to remain with the struggling club. He said the subject of a trade hasn't come up between himself and management. Spector's Note: Recchi has been rumoured to be a disruptive influence in the Pens dressing room, so if true he could be dealt, as it wouldn't make sense for a young rebuilding team to keep him around. If they do, however, it'll burst that rumour. Should be interesting to see what happens. Although he turns 38 this year, Recchi has proven to be a still-capable scoring forward and could provide valuable scoring depth and experience to a playoff bound team. THE LATEST THRASHERS NEWS. ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION: John Manasso reports Thrashers GM Don Waddell will be talking trade with his fellow general managers at their meeting this week at Lake Las Vegas. Waddell recently said he'd like to bring in an affordable faceoff specialist for a prospect or picks, but acknowledges teams are more interested in acquiring roster players, leading him to consider trading a current Thrashers player and take on more salary. Currently the Thrashers sit approximately $1.5 milion below the salary cap, and Waddell suggests he might deal a winger to bring in the player he needs, but one earning no more than $3 million. Spector's Note: Given Waddell's recent guarantee of his club making the playoffs, expect him to be aggressively shopping in the final days leading up to the deadline. CANUCKS TO SHOP FOR BACKUP? VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Ben Kuzma reports Canucks head coach Marc Crawford's unhappiness with the play of backup Maxime Ouellet is resulting in Alexander Auld being overworked, which in turn could spur GM Dave Nonis to call up Wade Flaherty and risk losing him via waivers or shop for a goalie to spell off Auld. As Kuzma writes, "with Olaf Kolzig about to re-sign in Washington, Evgeni Nabokov getting big bucks to stay in San Jose and Marc Denis off the market in Columbus, expect to hear that the Canucks are now chasing J.S. Giguere of Anaheim , Curtis Joseph of Phoenix and Vesa Toskala of San Jose." Spector's Note: If Nonis cannot bring up Flaherty, he must bring in a goalie Crawford will be comfortable in playing. Of those latter three noted by Kuzma, Toskala's contract would be the most affordable, yet he's struggled this season. Next would be "Cujo" but with their recent trade of Brian Boucher they might be planning to re-sign him. As for "Giggy", his contract is too expensive and would mean dumping a roster player...uh-oh, here comes the "Giguere for Todd Bertuzzi" rumours again! Arrrgghhhhh! PREDATORS SHOPPING FOR PHYSICAL D-MAN. THE TENNESSEAN: John Glennon reports Nashville Predators GM David Poile is hoping to acquire a physical defenceman by the trade deadline to bolster his blueline depth heading into the playoffs. Possible targets could include Washington's Brendan Witt (whom Poile drafted in the first round of the 1993 draft when he was the Capitals GM) and possibly Anaheim's Ruslan Salei and Keith Carney. Poile wouldn't comment on whom he's interested in, but admitted if he does swing a trade it could be "a little more painful" in terms of what he'd have to part with. Spector's Note: Poile made a passing reference to his depth at the wings, which might be where the return he offers could come from, possibly one of his young wingers. THE LATEST ON THE PANTHERS. PALM BEACH POST: Brian Biggane reports Florida Panthers GM Mike Keenan could be either a buyer or a seller leading up to the trade deadline, depending on where his club sits in the standings. Biggane claims Keenan has already spoken with some struggling teams, and could either pursue veteran help if his team is still in the playoff race by March 9th or could dump some veteran salaries, possibly Chris Gratton's or Sean Hill's, if not. Looking long term, Keenan could be an aggressive shopper in this summer's UFA market, particularly to plug holes in his blueline. Spector's Note: The article went on to note the blueliners who might be available in this summer's UFA market, but the Panthers could have their hands full trying to tempt some of them (Chara, Redden, Jovanovski, McCabe and T. Kaberle) to sign...if they're even available by July 1. Still, thanks to the salary cap, it'll be teams like the Panthers with more available cap space who could be the most active. WHen they say "2-way" does that mean he skates up and back and not side to side??? Laugh all you want, Red, but this is a 2 cup team without Jeff Friesen. redruM
Laugh all you want, Red, but this is a 2 cup team without Jeff Friesen. And he meant more than just that Ottawa goal. Sorry but I need some clarifiation!! Risky when you say he meant more than just the ott goal, do you mean the goal he scored or 4 minutes before that the goal he directly caused to let Ott tie the game?? And that team would have found a way to win w/ out freeze, there were plenty of guys who scored HUGE goals the CUP run.. not just Freeze,.someone else would have picked up the slack.. I'm positive.. we won the cup in 2003 INSPITE of Freeze not becuase of him!!!

CRASHER
but he wanted us to trade for Suckora but all living in the past aside... if Recchi didn't have that option he'd be a nice 2nd line add-on for a playoff run Recchi-Parise-Marshall ain't too bad then you can put Brylin on the 4th line where he should be..... MantaRay
I am not sure Recchi is such a good fit. the article mentions he is a disruptive force in the locker room, he makes $3 milllion a year and he is what -31???? No thanks.

Triumph
Don't even get me started....Besides on his current pace he will score between 26 & 28 goals this year... Hey, if he keeps this up, he might equal Friesen's career high. This year he doesn't have a Forsberg or Sakic to play with either. Thanks for playing. EDIT - I don't think Friesen is or was a better player than Chris Drury. But Chris Drury is so massively overrated it's incredible - I think he is a very good 2nd line wing. He's not a first line player, not unless he has some seriously talented linemates. Edited February 7, 2006 by Triumph
E-Devil
Nice to know we gave Friesen up for nothing and he turned out to be actually worth... Nothing How fitting. Drury is a better player then his stats tell you. He just goes through the motions during the regular season. I'd say he would be good to have for a team heading into the playoffs, but he should at most be on the second line. I'd take him as a rental player in a heart beat. Triumph
Nice to know we gave Friesen up for nothing and he turned out to be actually worth...Nothing! How fitting. He's playing on an awful team and has been injured. I expect him to get moved at the deadline. I also expect him to resurrect his career playing a 1 year deal with some team next season, much like Anson Carter, another well-traveled enigma who's enjoying an excellent season with the Canucks. E-Devil
He's playing on an awful team and has been injured. I expect him to get moved at the deadline. I also expect him to resurrect his career playing a 1 year deal with some team next season, much like Anson Carter, another well-traveled enigma who's enjoying an excellent season with the Canucks. I'd say a lot of it is still complacency for doing the minimum of what is needed from him. Even before he got injured, 1 goal in 14 games is pathetic for what Friesen is capable of. I agree that he will be moved out of Washington by the start of the next season. I expect him to have at most 2 good seasons somewhere else for the rest of his career. In a few years when his skills decline, unless he turns over a new leaf in his mid thirties he'll be done. He reminds me a lot of Arnott's split personalities. He can be fired up and leading one moment, then half-assing it another moment.

Darwindog
I hope Recchi stays a Penguin - he's a good fit there -- he's hot there . he's an ugly Flyer. He'd be a retarded Devil and I'd have to dislike him or grudgingly like him which i think is even worse. I just can't see him fitting in - he wouldn't be Nolanesque but he's just ... I dont know I think I'd see him as stupid and mean. I saw him as useless on the Flyers. He's cute and gritty on the Pens Any chance the terrib;e play of his team and his line mates could be somewhat attributed to the fact that he is also terible???
