SterioDesign
Larsson and Gelinas we're really good together last season so i'd like to it another try
Namelesz
Larsson and Gelinas we're really good together last season so i'd like to it another try Agreed. When they were both on and working well together it was such a great thing to see. I can see something like this happening: Green-Merril Zids-Sal Larsson- Gelly Harrold rotates Its not ideal but that can probably work. Triumph
Yeah, I think they'll try this to start: Greene-Merrill Salvador-Zidlicky Gelinas-Larsson And go from there, possibly with Gelinas-Zidlicky to be a thing when NJ is trailing. Although the fact that NJ did make an offer to Fayne suggests that they are not done on the D market.
cgb6397
The idea of a Salvador/Zidlicky pairing is a little scary. I obviously get the rationale, putting a stay at home defender with an offensive defensemen to allow Zid to create offense and have Sal lock down D. Can Salvador even do that though? I was thinking maybe Larsson-Gelinas Greene-Zidlicky Merrill-Salvador I'm much more comfortable with these pairings

EdgeControl
sal and Zid together??? Gellanis and Larsson??? OK, as long as we're not facing :tavares, crosby, malkin, haglin, grabner, ennis, kessel, or insert any western forward

I agree, or at least Im hoping we bring in a bigger body.... sal still sort of muddy's the waters even with Volch and fayne gone if he's here and playing minutes I unfortunately see him with merrill or Green Edited July 2, 2014 by EdgeControl

I just see him as a good asset we had to at least try to keep and if we could then figure out what to do with everything (that seems to be Lou's approach usually anyway, thats why we have too many bodies often when he cant get rid of some) Harrold is still there and we have kids who can come up if they need to. But of course... its lou so i could see him getting another D cause of course.
RizzMB30
I think the idea is that Gelinas-Larsson start out the season as the 3rd pairing, but by the end of the season I think it would be ideal if had improved their play to be 2nd pairing worthy. That being said, I could see Greene-Larsson together at some point and Greene-Merril as well. I know this had been said before, but I just don't see Lou getting another defenseman who would want to be the 7th wheel in a organization that already has one (Harrold). First, it can't be a good player that signs up for this. Two, who would want to???? If you can make Salvador disappear and give us a Willie Mitchell instead, fair enough. Triumph
Which also means the trade market No, it doesn't. I think the Devils would want to bring in a guy like Mark Fraser on a two-way. Someone with NHL experience who can be a leader on the minor league team but who can also (and I'm putting this in giant quotes because I don't believe it) fill in for 30 games if there's injuries or one of the young guys struggles. There's really nothing behind Harrold at all that's played in the NHL, and Lou definitely doesn't like that situation.

Sounded like you were talking about a defenseman on a one-way deal, or one they expect to compete for a roster spot. If that's what you are getting at, then I'd agree with you. Still, I would guess that they feel that Scarlett, Helegson and/or Hrbanarenka could probably get bottom pairing NHL time at this point, especially on a temporary basis. (I think they will want to give Severson a full season in Albany unless he's really lighting it up like Merrill did). You can always grab a Sheldon Brookbank type when you need him. There's also always Jay Leech to fall back on.

Raman Hrabarenka? McPherson? Maybe Helgeson. I know these guys aren't anything special, and all three of them will likely not be NHLers, but you can't see any of these guys getting time? At all? Even if injuries hit us hard? I guess I can understand it if they don't expect a healthy Salvador and Zidlicky for an entire season. But I think you can call these guys up. The Devils have been known to have players that will step up if injuries get really bad, that's how it works. I think this player would compete for a roster spot with Peter Harrold, though Harrold would clearly have the inside edge. I don't think the Devils like the idea of going into the season with 3 veteran defensemen on the backline. I heard the same stuff about Merrill being given a season to work stuff out in the minors and he ended up playing 50 games in the NHL. I'd be a little surprised if Severson didn't get some NHL games next season.

I doubt either would sign a 2 way however.

Looks like Tappen might be the sole bread winner in that household.
