oofrostonoo
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/player_bio.asp...3508&hubname=NJ Under Career potential it has him listed as first line center....so I guess that is the hype he has to live up to...i hope he is another gomez for us....but maybe even better. Jas0nMacIsaac
Everyone knew he had 1st line potential, almost every player in the first round (except Kesler) had 1st or 2nd line potential, the majority 1st.
Guest Devsrule
Wait so he IS playing at ND next year??????
Hellacious D
No, he signed a contract with the Devils, so by NCAA rules he cannot go back to UND. He will be in Albany or with the Devils.

MissionHockey
Scouting reports for TSN are pretty interesting. They have Gomez as a top-6 forward but I wouldn't put it by him to become one of the better 1st line centers in the league.
sheeps
Technically, Lou can not assign him to either team and he can finish his ACADEMIC career at UND, but why would Lou have signed him in the first place then? My bet is that he's playing opening game next year, whether Albany or New Jersey (whatever comes first).

I have no real problem with that infact it might do him good to form some chemistry with Suglobov or any other forward prospect early on in the minors. My bet is that he's playing opening game next year, whether Albany or New Jersey (whatever comes first). Even if you leave school early it just means you are ineligible to play for them, you could still find a way to take classes over the summer and get a degree if you wanted to. That is what Shaq did (kept going back to LSU over the summer), I believe, because he promised his parents he would finish. Or, if Zach didn't want to keep going to ND every summer, he could tranfer the credits to somewhere around here and go somewhere closer during the summer, IF he wants to finish. Richter kept taking courses at Columbia after he came out early from Wisconsin...don't know if he ever actually got his degree.
CaptainScotty
anyone else notice this guy is listed at 5-11? So the devils top three center could be Gomez, Parise, and Madden. Not to mention our wings are barely cracking 6-0 (Turner aside). Man, Holik sure would shore this up a bit. Too bad the idiot skipped town, forsaking whatever pride and respect he had. I'm sure Lou is looking at the roster too, he has to add some size somewhere, the team is getting awful small, reminds me of the creampuff Sens a while ago. How could this team beat Tampa when Lecavalier, Modin, and Richards are bigger than practically everyone on the roster? Much less Philadelphia or Boston. Plus, Parise hasn't played a single NHL game. More prospects are busts than sure shots. I'll believe this guy is good once he laces the skates on. Until then, I worry for the roster as it exists now. Er, I forgot Kozlov (but then again, it isn't too hard to do that). Any bets on whether Lou is going to keep this guy around? Guest Devsrule
Kozlov has size, but the is soft and never uses it to his advantage. Your are right about how this team is ridicously small. Lou must do something about that this summer.
MissionHockey
I think the point was that Lou wanted to take the team into a new direction by getting faster. Say what you want about Gomez, Madden, Parise, but these guys are fast.
Guest Devsrule
Yeah but that did nothing for us vs philly.
Zamode
Gomez is fast and he's a good skater. He's behind Elias and Nieder, ayer but he's still one of the faster dudes on the team.
Devils731
Since when does height decide how tough you are? I'll take the a 5'10" 200 pound guy going into the corner over the 6'0" 180 pound guy. Its all about toughness per square inch. The tall guys have a longer reach, the short guys have lower centers of gravity, so those 2 advantages somewhat cancel out, then it all comes down to how much poundage you pack onto your frame. Just being short does not mean you aren't tough, Gomez is actually a tough guy to take the puck off of behind the net because he has really strengthened his legs, so please lets ignore height when we talk about how tough a player will be. -Scott
MissionHockey
Yeah but that did nothing for us vs philly. Madden and Gomez weren't effective? Madden kept Handzus's line off the score sheet the whole series at even strength and Gomez had 6 assists in 5 games.
insanity_gallops
First of all, Devils731 nailed what I was going to say. Second. Devils might not be the biggest team right now, but Lou knew that and started to address it with last year's draft in particular. Take a look at the size attributes for some of our higher-end prospects: RW Suglobov - 6'1" 190 LW Pihlman - 6'3" 210 C Foster - 6'1" 200 LW Tallackson - 6'4" 205 RW Laine - 6'1" 200 C Khomutov - 6'3" 205 LW Ryznar - 6'3" 205 RW Voros - 6'4" 190 RW Massen - 6'2" 220 In fact, of the top prospects in the Devils system (according to HockeysFuture, at least), only Parise (5'11"), Vrana (6'0"), Posnov (6'0"), and Johansson (6'0") are under 6'1" I'd say that's not too shabby. Guest Devsrule
Madden and Gomez weren't effective? Madden kept Handzus's line off the score sheet the whole series at even strength and Gomez had 6 assists in 5 games. The stuff that is not on the scoresheet is where they were domintated, like big hits, and winning battles to pucks etc Did madden even have a point? Jas0nMacIsaac
Tallackson is one of those prospects that will be interesting to follow. When he wants to play and is motivated it is really hard to stop him. He was excellent at the WJC in 2003 (I seen him in person). Ryznar is nothing special, he may be a 4th line plugger sometime in the future but my bets are he will be an AHL'er.
peteyvegas
All in all, we still have no one to administer center-ice hits. That's a problem.
sheeps
All in all, we still have no one to administer center-ice hits. That's a problem. More important, no one to clear the crease.
Jerrydevil
I wouldn't say "no one." I think most would agree that Colin White stepped up physically in the playoffs, even though the Devs lost in 5. Edited May 3, 2004 by Jerrydevil
NewarkDevil5
Problem is that White is one guy. We need two more of him on defense as well as a few Randy McKays up front.
Jerrydevil
Yeah, the Devs could use some more bulk. We may have to wait on the kids though. Not many teams are giving away big talented bodies, especially on defense. (By the way, Mike Commodore is playing a nice role for Calgary....another Devil defense prospect doing well elsewhere, a tribute to the Devs farm system). It'd be great if Lou could find the next Randy McKay, who really made something of himself in NJ, going from plumber to power-play garbage-goal specialist. He was good at the dirty work. If Langenbrunner is healthy, he gives the Devs needed grit. 2004 was kind of a lost season for him.
MantaRay
Agreed: We need another Whitey in the mix (love Boyton on the B's). Lou needs to pick-up a Dano-like D-man in the offseason.
