Guadana
Overall I have groups on this draft 1 Bedard, 2 Michkov, 3 Fantilli, 4 Karlsson -pure star potential 5 Leonard 6 Smith 7 Benson 8 Reinbacher -serious first line potential, great instruments 9 Simashev 10 Dvorsky 11 Barlow 12 Yager 13 Willander 14 Moore -great floor,NHL future Wood But Heidt Musty Ritchie Stenberg Gulyayev Sandin-Pellikka Perrealut Cristall Danielson Stenberg Sale Brindley Hrabal Honzek Dragicevic Ziemmer- very talented players with some questions or serious questions in the game. Some should go higher in the draft. 58 pick options We should talk about pure potential mostly on my taste. And there are some rumours Florida interesting in Karpovich as potential pick in the second round. https://eliteprospects.com/player/619368/daniil-karpovich stats https://youtu.be/oA5Gw6z7-IM - highlughts Big mobile defenseman with upside on both sides. Perron is an interesting player as high risk high reward option. He is on the small side and could drop because of it. Skills but lack of physicallity. https://eliteprospects.com/player/648248/jayden-perron https://youtu.be/2RRwpQsFK-8 I don`t think that Stramel will fall so low, but his lack of consistency and lack of production could scare some gms. Anyway he is and mobile two-way center. https://youtu.be/GkjlWKF6U04 https://eliteprospects.com/player/623837/charlie-stramel Suniev is interesting for 2-3 round. He is big and have speed and puckhandling abuility. Need to work more on his skating, again - he isn`t slow. And he has very good hands. Some kind of Nolan Foote. Not as physical, but faster. https://youtu.be/1EdXdKv9sE0 https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/620335/aydar-suniev Sawchyn is flashy player on the both ends. His tools are may be too flashy and focus on himself, question how he will adapt his game on the higher level. https://youtu.be/AUBfa7cAxVY https://eliteprospects.com/player/535611/gracyn-sawchyn Strbak is good defensive defenseman with good puck work. Would be great if he can work on his skating more. As 2 round pick I`m ok with. https://eliteprospects.com/player/595301/maxim-strbak ttps://youtu.be/1EdXdKv9sE0 Kantserov is intriguing player as potential scoring cube. He is undersized 5`9, but his shot is deadly. And he is good in finding open space in the right time. He is good high risk high reward option for the third round. https://eliteprospects.com/player/709028/roman-kantserov #njdevils Edstrom is a good option if available(I don`t think he will). He is a big center with good skating to play physical\interior role. https://eliteprospects.com/player/608308/david-edstrom https://youtu.be/QIeCUiLTtD4 Wahlberg is good big two way forward with good shot. He looked interesting on international level where I saw him. https://youtu.be/vVPTs7Auob0 https://eliteprospects.com/player/643681/anton-wahlberg Edited June 23, 2023 by Guadana
Jerzey
Without a 1st round pick it’s just not the same. Kind of relieving, to be honest, after 10 years of the draft being the highlight of the season.
vincois
Nice work Guadana. Karpovich might be a good choice. I've been listening to XM and many of the talking heads think that if Michkov falls to #8 Washington will definitely take him. Ovi will take him under his wing.
vincois
Good highlights from Suniev too. Has wheels/hands. Plus he's in No. America. I think playing on NHL size ice is an advantage. Since,Ukraine invasion, scouts haven't been scouring Russian prospects as much.

I suspect we’ll see our fair share of first-rounders being dealt for immediate short-term help in the years to come. At least they’re picks that should be coming late in the round. And yeah, if the Devils are continually in the position where trading away first-rounders makes total sense, I won’t be complaining much. Yeah, it will be nice just sitting back and watching how other teams like Calgary, Winnipeg and Philly try to solve the mess they are in. Hopefully we see a bunch of big trades.

On the other, man did it suck as to the “WHY” that went behind having to snag those extra picks.

No, they are not and should stay away from trading first round picks, only if its for good player of good age and skill, like they did with Mayer. ------- Colorado won their cup only in 5th year, Toronto didn't. And they traded a lot of their first round picks. And now they have nothing in the depth. Devils hit second round. Only once. We don't know how good our defense will be without Graves and Sevs. And more importantly, young talents give us some cheap depth and may be some surprising talent. I'm not telling they should never trade first round pick, especially if they think they are ready and one special player will give more fire power. But if its a strategy for every year, its a good way to short the window. And our window is big. Its huge. Jack is only 21-22. Luke and Nemec are younger. Devils have great top 6 material for the next 5-6-7 years, but they should think what they will have after, when Jack will be only 30 and other part of offensive core will start to decline. Bottom line pieces can be signed on the market for cheap. Because a lot of players would want to win the cup or burst their stats in top 6 role with Nico/Jack. So we should trade our firsts picks, if its a real deal, especially for players on the good long term deals, but its much better for Fitz to work how he did - Siegenthaler, Marino, Graves. And you know what? How things like that can happen? Its a scouting. So if someone think that "f@ck draft, we finally out of it" than I believe Fitz don't. And the only way to win is building the team on the talent foundation and coach them after. Creating the best depth. And find some luck. So for the Devils organisation draft will never stop. It did once, when Lou decided that Conte did good enough job. It didn't help to win, it ruined the franchise. So I believe Fitz is smart enough (and like I see he is) to not stop finding talent, working on draft and asking for reasonable trades, not "1st for one year of immediate help". BTW its look like devils are not far away from trading first round pick of this draft
Colorado Rockies 1976
@Guadana I’m not saying that they should just trade away EVERY first-rounder willy-nilly. I trust Fitz to do it when it makes sense, for the right kind of player.

They are some kind of Western big team, but still got Stankoven, Bourque, Johnstonn and Bichsel from the draft. It should help them to make another step. And they traded away first round pick for Lundqvist. I`m trully not so high on this step but I understand it. Hope Fitz will continue to make same step with lower price like he did before.

BUT, it’s one thing to have two 1OAs, a 2OA, and a 4OA to work with, in helping to assemble a core to build around…now it’s important to hit on those lower-round picks…they help to keep things going as cap space tightens, or as current core players inevitably decline and/or deal with injuries. 3 minutes ago, Guadana said: 7 years ago in this day. Like the idea of having two young D who should be studs for several years (even if Plan A for Fitz appears to be selecting Slaf).
