Thoughts on the game

Turnovers, transition game, questionable calls, really bad non calls, Alfredsson, 4 goals on 8 shots...

First I would like to say that I would never want to get hit by Ras. I was lucky enough to have a friend who had tickets on the glass in the corner last night and he hits like a freight train. The transition game, or should I say the turnover game last night for the Devils was horrible and had a nice helping hand in the Devils giving up 4 goals on 8 shots.

Alot of questionable calls were made and missed last night, Langenbrunners stick being held, Parise getting boarded twice, both times with the official not more than 10 feet away, and a couple of pretty dives by the Senators. Ras's hooking call at then end of the second was iffy.

I hate to say it, but Alfedsson would look good in a Devils uniform. I knew he was a good player, but I never knew just how fiesty he was. He never gives up and plays the body every chance he gets.

The Devils blew a big opportunity last night because Emery did not look good at all. Any papers that say he shined last night were watching the wrong game.

At most the first should have ended 1-1. I put 1 goal on Marty for the first. I know all the papers are saying his mystique is gone, it's round one all over again, but the 5 guys in front of him did nothing to help him in the first. Rafalski assist was the best...moron.

Paul Martin should sit for a game. He hasnt had the greatest season and it's carrying over to the post season as well.

Hopefully our captain is over the sniffles and can play Saturday. Clarkson does not look like he's ready for playoff action, he looked very unsure last night.

I was just wondering ... is the first period over, yet? Geez, it seemed like it lasted for days.

Anyway, definitely agree on Marty. He had absolutely no chance on 2 and/or 3 of the 1st period goals. The Sens took it to the Devs and I think it surprised them a bit and they didn't know how to react. <Not sure why> They settled down in the 2nd and played well from there.

Once again the Parise-Langs-Zajac line shows up big ... and nice to see Parise taking no prisoners. I just love how these guys play.

Finally, I know there's a lot of love around here for the guy, but I feel that the Clarkson experiment is over for these playoffs. I didn't really notice him, unless he was in the penalty box.

Read Is Fundamental...who was whining...when a guy gets boared TWICE right in FRONT of the official and he DOESNT make the call, as a fan I should just sit there and say, oh well the Devils are playing like $hit these NON calls should help them...but when a Senator dives (I mean gets tripped) and the Senators get the call I should be satisfied...sorry pal, but I felt like I was watching a porno last night because the officials were blowing calls all night long...I dont know what game you were watching.

Maybe Raffy will get a cold.

I think it's fair to say both teams played great for 1 period each and then matched each other's play in the 3rd.

The Sens looked great in the First then faded until Reddens Goal in the 3rd and then they did what they could to contain the Devils. I liked the fact the Sens did not panic...they just kept their composure which is something they have done well since Christmas.

The Devils looked good in the second, but the 1st period cost them the game.

The 3rd pretty much balanced out I thought.

I knew that Tampa had scored on Brodeur glove side a couple of times, but 5 goals glove side on Brodeur is just strange. I don't know how else to put it because I know Marty is better than that. Why is Marty's glove hand side seem so vulnerable these days? Did he hurt it or something? Shoulder maybe?

Emery made a few good saves but as always...traffic in front with a bouncing puck usually ends up behind him. The Gionta goal from the top of the circle was a bullet which Emery should have had. He was out of position in terms of cutting down the angle and you could see afterwards, Emery was checking just that.

Greens goal was also a beauty...which Emery had no chance on with the traffic in front of him screening it.

Either way... I expect a much better game from both teams on Saturday. I'll take the Win...but we can probably all agree both teams were far from their best last night.

the one thing that does truly distress me now..... it's not the sh!tty play of Marty.... seems we can win in spite of him this year (he does seem to be worn out now, the fact that this is game 85 plus pre-season shows it.... and you can see it now because he tends to sit in his net more then wasting energy fetching pucks and making things easier on the D).... but that's not what worries me now... what I am concerned with is the fact that the concept of the Devils having a shut down line that can nuke the opponent's top line is now DEAD... this is 5 of 7 games that the opponent's top line has run ape sh!t on Madden/Pando and Brylin (something to look into in the off-season.... a good RW for this line who can skate and play D... cause it NEEDS it), that's gonna be a tough hole to fill

Dagwood, I thought the Senators did a tremendous job defensively in the third period. I can't remember where I read it, but one poster here said the Devils had a piss-poor effort in the third. I don't think so. The Sens really put the clamps on us.

But you know what, Crasher. The goals by the top lines are not really set up goals. Alot of these goals are stoppable goals. Between flukes and Marty's brain cloud, the forecheck IS in a way stopping the top lines from attacking. At least from a formation perspective. They're not coming in strong and taking the play to the net as much as the goals against appear.

Definitely. How can you watch last night's game and see a lack of effort?? They scored 4 goals! How can you score four times with no effort? You don't battle back from a 4-0 deficit to make it 4-3 and then just give up, why would they do that? That makes no sense. Some people don't understand that there is another team on the ice. The Sens did a good job of holding their lead in the third. It's not that the Devils weren't trying, they just couldn't beat the Sens defense enough times.

Even in the first period the offense wasn't as bad as people were making it out to be. I thought the Devils had more quality scoring chances in the first. The reason they went into the locker rooms at 4-1 was because the Devils only managed to finish only one of their chances while Brodeur wasn't his best and they took stupid penalties and Rafalski made that horrible pass. They still made some chances, Gionta almost scored on that one-timer in the slot, someone else (I forget who, might've been Gionta again) had a shot from the side of the net and Emery made a diving save, someone made a pass to a wide open Parise that was just barely too far ahead for him... They had the chances, just couldn't finish them.

Our best option for RW on Madden's line is Rass. Brylin will lead us to an early exit. I was saying this BEFORE game 1 vs Tampa.
