Why The Love For Pelly

In light of the fact that Pelly (by my interpretation of him being the third line guy between berg and clarkson for this game and sestito being the 4th line one)appears to have the 3rd and though soon to be 4th line center job all but locked in with his name I just have to ask.

What exactly is it that people see in Pelly that makes him worth a roster spot over ... anyone. Does anyone that has been to any of the pre-season games, spyed through a window into the practice rink, or by way of Lowell games etc have some inside scoop on him? As far as I see he has mediocre to maybe slightly above average defensive skills and solid faceoff abilitys and thats where it ends. his hands are atrocious, his shot is underwhelming, his vision of the ice seems non-exsistant much of the time and he seems to make just as many rookie mistakes as the next guy.

Not sure if this exactly deserves its own thread, but I feel its something on many peoples minds since it has to be quesitoned whether or not he exactly deserves a roster spot.

Thoughts?

Everyone has been hard on him just because he hasn't had the most spectacular preseason. Big deal, there's plenty of time for him to show his worth. He's been in the system a while and he was indeed captain of Lowell last year. He's not going to be a goal-scorer but if he can play center - that is, he takes face-offs and doesn't play like a total moron in our end - then he's on the team. There's just no other option unless you want the third and fourth lines to be centered by Sestito and Walter, which isn't going to happen. Pelley is almost definitely here to stay, give him a shot. I think he'll have a decent year.

Well first, that opinion isn't based on 3 preseason games, it's based on 57 regular season games and 2 preseasons of play, so I feel we have had plenty of time to deside on his worth.

he had almost no points in all those games and has been scored on many times in presesaon this year and I don't recall him being much better in the dzone during his 57.

I don't know something about this kid never sat right with me ever since people started saying he was the next coming of john madden. the two are worlds apart in every aspect of the game. Pelly's only ability is being responsible defensively

He kills penalties and he's a nice, but unspectacular 4th line center... he can't be ANY worse then Holik or any of the other stiffs they rolled out before him too.... he's not gonna kill ya but he won't win a game, if we didn't lack a 2nd OR 3rd Line Center NO ONE WOULD CARE about Pelley!

What's not to like? The guy won two Stanley Cups with us, has won so many Players' Player awards, was up for the Selke one year, he kinda looks like Stallone ... oh wait, you're talking about Pelley. My bad.

HAHAHA with the not so subtle dig on pando ... at least he brings some things to the table though. Honestly he would be worth keeping around for no other reason than Parise likes having him on the team. He's in the shot club with him plays in all those road poker games with Z&Z and back when it was in question Parise put his vote in for Pando to be captain (I hope you guys just remember that because im not nearly techy enough to find the article *it was a chere one I believe*).

... Plus he CAN score he just doesn't really do it enough lol. the year he went up for the selke he prolly could've had 20-25 goals, but he had the pelvis breakage problem and no more season for him (I was goin nuts that night he had a hattrick lol).

And 731 yeah there is a buncha hate for him among the fans, but he seems to get it from the people that actually matter aka the coaches and more specifically Lou. I'm just tryin to find if it's just a case of Lou under the impresion NHL teams can't survive without denoting someone as a "checking forward". or if there is actually some practical reason that I just haven't noticed.

I don't know I just am really gonna hope for my own personal sanity while watching these games that it ends up being sestito on our 4th line once Patty comes back until then I guess I can deal with 4th line center being this useless lump

Pelley always seems to miss his assignment, every time I've seen him on the ice, anyway. I don't think he has the stuff to be the 3rd line center (check out how rabid MadDog used to be before his decline--thing of beauty). Pelley is more likely the 4th line player on this team, but I could easily see him not making it or sent back to the AHL if Lemaire doesn't see anything in him.

Personally, I'd much rather have Pando try the center position so then at least we don't have to waste two roster spots with defensive specialists (only "supposed" in Pelley's case). When Pando played center, I was kind of excited that maybe a guy like Zharkov would make the team if Pelley doesn't (Pando replaces Madden, Zharkov replaces Pando kinda deal). But, I won't get my hopes up.

I think Pelley will get a good look for at least a little while, but I won't be shocked at all if he gets sent back to the minors and then stays there forever. With Lemaire at the helm, I wouldn't even be shocked if he doesn't make the club, but I have a feeling Lou Lams will make it so, at least to give him a shot.

You're right tho - nothing special about Pelley beyond the fact that he plays center.

I'd rather keep pando at wing. I don't think he'd be an effective center.

The main reason he gets so much attention is the remark Lou made last spring about needed to make room on the team for Pelley (as part of the reason to let Madden go). He mentioned Pelley by name and I made Lou's quote POD. It was the first time I ever suspected Lou of using Drugs or Alcohol.

i like him because he had a HUGE hit last night against the flyers. im not sure who he hit but whoever it was was very slow to get up and hobbled to the bench slowly. other then that he seemed to be kinda average i guess but centers are few and far between these days it seems

That hit was great it happened right in front of me, You could see the guys facial reaction after his cheek bones smashed into the top of the boards where it turns and the glass starts...awesome.
