DevilNurn
I was discussing this with a less-hockey-inclined friend of mine. Hypothetically, removing the factor of the two-week break for the Olympics, would you prefer a traditional All-Star game, an Olympic-type Tournament (bracketed country vs. country) or some kind of fusion of the two, like North America vs. Europe or something? Personally, I would prefer an All-Star game, but I wondered if some people had a strong preference for the country-based tournament style. Of course, All-Star Games have their drawbacks (1 member from each team leads to snubs), but I still prefer the idea.

nyrsuck26
I would much prefer the Olympic tournament, but I do always like the All-star skills competition, which in my opinion is much better than either that of NBA or MLB. I agree that the game itself is not great.

thegame346
All star game sucks. Even if they made it so the winning conference got home ice in the Finals like the MLB does it would STILL be unwatchable.
DaneykoIsGod
Wow. I might be the only person who likes watching the All-Star game. And yeah, it's pointless. It's supposed to be. It's an All-Star game. Making All-Star games meaningful is the dumbest thing a sport could possibly do. But, back on point, it's gotta be East vs. West and the skills competition is also something I always look forward to. The Olympics are better though. Last night is testament to that. DevilMinder
I can never motivate myself to watch the all stars. World games are more important and thus more entertaining.
Derek21
After watching yesterday, it's no contest. Olympics are far and away. All-Stars should be rotated. Like next year, do NA vs Europe. Then 2012, go East/West. Mixing it up would give it some juice. Edited February 23, 2010 by Derek21

I agree with all of this. I can't tell if the OP means a new international tournament in Olympic years. In that case, I would prefer the All-Star Game because so few players would care about a brand new tournament in the middle of the NHL season, so too many players wouldn't even bother to play and it would just be a waste. But the Olympics kick ass.

Not that it's relevant to this thread, but next year the AHL is finally dropping its long-running Canada vs. The World All-Star format next year, presumably in favor of an East-West format. PeteyNice
I hated the North America vs World All Star format. I want all of the Devils on the same team. That format did not add anything to the game. I also love the Olympics. It is the only tournament of the major sports where you have the best of the best representing their countries,
MantaRay
The All-Star game is not for hockey fans, as they do not play hockey. It is an exhibition of "popular players". NHL should get rid of the All-Star game as its irrelevant.
DaneykoIsGod
The All-Star game is not for hockey fans, as they do not play hockey. Guess I should stop watching porn then. Unless they're playing hockey, of course. It is an exhibition of "popular players". It's also "fun." NHL should get rid of the All-Star game as its irrelevant. It's about as relevant as the awards ceremony in that it has no bearing on the outcome of the season and is a mere resume-builder for players and a half-hearted attempt at ratings for networks. I guess we should stop handing out the Norris, Vezina and Hart then. After all, they don't play hockey at the ceremony either. Look, the All-Star game is what it is. If you're tuning in hoping to see a game played with the intensity of a playoff -- or even regular season -- game, you're in for disappointment. I enjoy watching the skilled guys pull off moves and one-timers and plays we'd never see when defense is actually being played, laugh at some of the stuff said by the mic'ed up players and overall enjoy a game where I can actually root for the same team as my Rangers and Flyers fan friends. You either enjoy the All-Star game for what it is, or hate it for being something it isn't and should never be.

HellOnICE
I've always said the NHL needs to make it a true "Hockey Weekend" with the all star game as its centerpiece match. I've always said I'd like to see a Prospects All Star Game. I'd like to see a NCAA vs. CHL showdown or the CHL All Star Game take place during NHL All Star weekend. I'm always a fan of the super skills, but I'd make it more than just the guys participating in the actual all star game - since the individual skill guys maybe outside the ASG itself. And yes I'd rotate around the ASG format East/West NA/World... Edited February 23, 2010 by HellOnICE
PeteyNice
An NCAA/CHL game would be no contest. The NCAA team would win almost every time.
njskaguy33
I have to side with DiG on this one. While it doesn't hold the intensity of a playoff game, for me, the All Star game is a nice break in the season where my Devils induced blood pressure can decrease and I can just sit back and enjoy myself some hockey. It's mindless fun that everyone can enjoy...what's really wrong with that? Saying the NHL should do away with the All Star game is ridiculous, simply because it's a nice honor for the players, it breaks up the season and it's good old fashioned escapist sports. Nothing on the line, nothing to play for, just the best in the biz playing what boils down to a pick up game of pond hockey. Both the Winter Classic and the All Star game, to me, have that charm about them. Now, to the OP, if it's a choice between the Olympics and the All Star Game, there's no question. The Olympics win out everytime. Nothing beats players playing for the honor of their country, except playing for the Cup, of course.

I am typically more interested in the prospects game, but then they made it 4-on-4 and really watered that down too. NCAA vs CHL would be great. I would love to see maybe an ECHL or AHL game thrown in as well.

Every single year everybody complains about the All-Star Game as if they're expecting to be on the edge of their seats watching a fast-paced and physical game between teams that hate each other. Well no wonder those people complain, they have ridiculous expectations about what the game is going to be like. I loved watching it when I was a kid, and I still enjoy watching it because I like seeing the players just messing around. If that doesn't interest you, that doesn't mean they should get rid of it--it means you shouldn't waste your time watching.
ThreeCups
Getting rid of the All Star game is a ridiculous suggestion. With that being said, the Olympics are 100x better than the AS game and it isn't even close. The AS game is a chance for the skill guys to show exactly that, skill. There is no hitting involved and it is just a fun game to watch, and for the players to be a part of. The Olympics have the intensity of a regular season/playoff hockey game. Players sporting their countries' sweater, and going all out to win a medal. Back to the All Star game...they should add a Rookies vs Sophomores game just like the NBA has. It would be very entertaining.

There's no difference between the cheesy awards and a meaningless exhibition. I don't watch awards. It's too political. Not that it's relevant to this thread, but next year the AHL is finally dropping its long-running Canada vs. The World All-Star format next year, presumably in favor of an East-West format. That's good I guess. They've had that format forever. I wonder how it will be received.
