You have to look at who he played against. Tom Preissing was never matched against top lines and played on a potent power play.

Brian Pothier got a similar deal from the Capitals last year for doing the same thing.

Preissing is being paid like the 2nd pairing defender he is - that's actually not that bad a deal. But on LA, his +/- should be closer to -20.

exactly correct but this was a contract that lou could have given (or improved on slightly). again, there's no telling if he did offer preissing a contract and the guy just said, "i'm not going to NJ."

souray or stuart now.

Is that Triumph using +/- to make an argument?

no - it's Triumph showing why +/- is useless without context. Preissing's +/- will drop between 40-50 points, and he won't get any worse or better - but his team and situation will.

sundstrom - it is a contract Lou could've given, but why would he do that? Preissing just doesn't seem to fill our needs that well. I don't think he's a very good PP QB either.

He is no PP QB whatsoever. I kinda liked him as a stay-at-home defense type. Certainly not an offensive D-man.

Also how the hell he got that +/- still remains a mystery to me.

so UFA still left

Forsberg, Souray, Bertuzzi, Shanahan, Handzus, Slava Kozlov, Stuart, Nagy

Those are just from TFP's top thirty... but I think it's safe to say that Lou won't sign any injury prone older players... realistically I see Souray, Big Bert, Handzus, Kozlov, and Stuart are our best bets

When Souray comes off the board it will probably give us an idea of where Lou is thinking financially.

Hes gotta be playing teams against each other now. I would bet hes the next name off the board.

The correct response is NONE OF THE ABOVE.

My thinking was like yours yesterday. Because of the ridiculous contracts being thrown around yesterday, Lou didn't make a move. At least that's what I think the reason was anyway. So these players that are left are our only options. Kozlov could be a #1 or #2 center which we NEED. Parise could be put at center for Bertuzzi to play wing... and Souray and Stuart are defenseman that we could really use. I really think Lou has to make a move, real soon. Some team who lost the running for the previously signed Dmen will make Souray a redic. offer... Lou has to step up.

unless you're giving stuart or souray 4/20, you're not getting them. i would give it to stuart. souray i'd top at 3 years but i'd give him 4.5/year.

bertuzzi on a incentive type deal for short years? ok.

handzus is possible if it's 3 years or less and $4M or less (his injury still scares the hell out of me).

shanny's will take whatever the rangers give him

kozlov - pass

nagy - pass

forsberg - won't come (although i'd offer him 1 year $5M to see).

souray is going to get 5/30 - curious why you think he'd drop down that far. I recognize that Rafalski is a more valuable player but NHL GMs are stupid and don't study their history.

stuart i'd definitely give 4/20 even though I don't like him, I think the Kool-Aid might work well with him.

to me lou's always been concerned with blowing his salary structure out of whack - he still has a very collegiate mindset on how to build a team and he hates the idea of paying less valuable players more money than an established guy on his team - i think he thinks it creates resentment, jealousy, and is not conducive to building a winner. wasn't it lou who said we'd all be better off if NHL salaries were not public?

sundstrom, if we got guerin, i think the police would be called several times during devils games - by midseason i'd be committed to an institution. they'd force me to watch tapes of guerin in dallas and boston clockwork orange-style - i'd come back to this board defending his inevitable playoff disappearence.

You'd have to win some new board award for your dedication to the team if you got insitutionalized for the good of the team (or the good of the board)
