thelastonealive
NBC Schedule is out for the year. We got 3 games this year My link The POSSIBILITY of three games. No way the NHL chooses Devils/Blue Jackets over Rangers/Flyers, or Panthers/Devils over Flyers/Blackhawks. MAYBE we sneak on on 4/10 if our game with Boston means anything, but even still, there's Red Wings/Blackhawks to compete with that day so I doubt it. The flex scheduling is a joke, it's so transparent it's hilarious. Seriously, Super Bowl Sunday - will NBC pick Pittsburgh/Washington or Tampa Bay/St. Louis? High drama. DaneykoIsGod
@dchesnokov According to @plysenkov and our mutual sources the league is looking for a contract for around 13 years for Kovalchuk. I feel like the league should be paying Kovalchuk. I mean, if they get to pick the terms and length of the contract, that's only fair, right? So the league is saying that Kovalchuk can't be signed past 40? I swear, if this is true and nothing happens with the yet-to-begin deals like Luongo's that take players past their 40th birthdays, I'm gonna make vague threats about doing something drastic but really just end up sitting on my couch and eating Doritos. But I'll eat them angrily!
maxpower
so, any of you guys holding Kovalchuk responsible for this too, or is just a league bashfest. 2 weeks and all he gives up is a couple of years and a couple million dollars? he's in it for the money and the money alone, and all he's doing is causing embarassment for the organization. Do I smell a 14 year compromise to avoid another ugly arbitration and to finally put an end to this nonsense?

He's not giving up years. Lou wants to give up as few years as possible to keep the cap hit low. Kovy would have no problem signing a 12 year contract. He's in it for the money alone? I'm sorry, but did he sign with the KHL? Kovy isn't doing anything wrong here.
Ollie McKraut
Back in the just-past-July 1st days of uncertainty, I felt that I would be very very disappointed and frustrated if the Devils did not sign Kovalchuk, but I never figured I would hold it against the player for pursuing his market value (which is, in the theory sense, what a team is willing to pay for his services). cgosha21
Well the LA Kings agreed to a contract with Willie Mitchell, so it is safe to say that they have no intentions in getting back involved with Koy. They probally don't want to deal with the headache of Gary "RAT"men! So I guess Kovy is going to have to take a little less money & stay, or KHL there he goes! I don't think it's Kovy's fault,if it was about the money he would have stayed with Atlanta. Now can't blame the guy for trying to get a lifetime contract from someone. It's also not his fault that the league decided to put it's foot down with his contract. If the league has an issue with these type's of deals then they should have set the bar with the DiPietro contract.

njskaguy33
Personally, I don't get all the "Devils should just walk" comments. It's obvious Kovy has committed to playing here, now we're hanging on Russian tweeters for any bit of information concerning the business side. Players in other leauges hold out all the time, sometimes right up to the beginning of the season. This isn't a holdout by Kovy or the Devs, it's a c@ck block from the leauge. While I think it's pretty socialist that the league is saying what contrac tthey will accept, the 4 parites involved will eventually come to an agreement and Kovy will be signed. There is also no rooting interest for anybody to walk away from this. The Devs have made it very clear they want Kovy for the rest of his career and Kovy has publically stated he wants to play here. A back out by either party would be horrific public relations move. We just need to be patient and trust that a compromise will come out of this that everybody will be able to live with. Yes, it's annoying to us, the fans who just want to order our Kovy jerseys and start making fantasy line combos, but to the people involved it's strictly business. Good post Bullet, all well said. But if socialism works anywhere at all, it's in sports leagues. Hence, a salary cap. But in the same way socialism fails everywhere else, the league is now abusing their power and taking their control too far.

maxpower
And Kovy wants more years yeah, 2. it's definately not the $25-35M he'd be leaving on the table, that has to be hidden in these goofy contracts to keep him from having a $9M cap hit If the league has their way. they're already at 7, genius. what do you think they're going to do, go to federal court and try to get the league to have to reinstate the prior contract, against the precedent set by an arbitrator in a binding hearing? Honestly if you where in his shoes would you risk signing a 8/$56-60 deal. Again I can't blame him for trying to get what he thinks he's worth. And I agree the DP Contract is flat, but I do think it opened up a can of worms that has lead to some of the bigger contracts you see today.
