Rock
NHLPA Execs meet in secret location http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=119200 Canadian Press 3/22/2005 TORONTO (CP) - The National Hockey League Players' Association began a three-day meeting with its executive committee Tuesday to plan its next move. President Trevor Linden was joined at an undisclosed city by executive committee vice-presidents Bill Guerin, Vincent Damphousse, Bob Boughner, Arturs Irbe and Trent Klatt. Also present was NHLPA executive director Bob Goodenow, senior director Ted Saskin, associate counsels Ian Pulver and Ian Penny, director of business relations Mike Gartner and outside counsel John McCambridge. No media availability is expected throughout the three-day gathering. The NHLPA was offered two proposals by the NHL last week and may use the meeting to come up with a counter-offer. MadDog2020
They better take waht they can while it's still there. The should've taken the 42.5 cap a while ago. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Of course. But you KNOW they'll reject both proposals. That's all these guys do is reject, reject, reject. It's not even a question- the question is if they make a counter-proposal, how ridiculous will it be and how much dumber and blind to the obvious will it make them look? MantaRay
At this point they will be lucky if they get a $35.0 Million cap.
rbdf
President Trevor Linden was joined at an undisclosed city by executive committee vice-presidents Bill Guerin, Vincent Damphousse, Bob Boughner, Arturs Irbe and Trent Klatt. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> o.k., so linden seems like he may have some brains up there, and maybe boughner too. Irbe? wasn't this guy last seen in the echl collecting his guaranteed nhl paycheck? can you say "poster child for part of the problem here". Damphousse, wasn't he another one of those "i demand millions, based on things I did 8 to 10 years ago" players the last time his contract was being negotiated. And Guerin? What kind of genius allows this idiot to be his representative. The guy is just an arrogant a-hole to begin with. The other 700 members of the nhlpa making less than him should have kicked his little prima donna "i'm a big star" egotistical a$$ long ago. If those are the guys making the decisions on the players side, they should just send an e-mail out to all the players right now saying "you're not getting a paycheck next year either". Way to shoot yourselves in the foot gang. Typical career is about 7 to 10 years long, now you've pissed away 10% to 15% of your career earnings and are staring down the barrell of the gun that will take 10% to 15% more off. And don't even get me started on the whole "killed the goose that layed the gold, er, I mean, Platinum, egg" thing. Well, hopefully comcast will pick up CSTV and ESPNU next year so I can at least watch some college games.

'7'
how is this the players fault? they didn't force the owners to pay them. The players can demand all they want, clearly the owners said "fine, we can afford it" half the league is playing in europe, making very good money for less games, so no they haven't thrown away huge amounts of cash. NJDevs4978
It's not the players fault that the owners paid them (and it's not the owners' fault either it's just the natural inflation of the marketplace when you have 30 competing teams, some with higher payrolls than others), it's the players fault for refusing to acknowledge how dire the situation is. Zero, nada , nilch. How many owners have made nothing ? HOw many owners lifestyles have changed? How have their families been affected ? msweet
Why do I have this picture in my mind of all of them in the "Cone of Silence"... for those of you who remember Get Smart.
Triumph
They're not making good money, most of them. And there is absolutely no way that they can continue to get paid good money. Chort said he paid $18 for the best seat in the house in a playoff game. These guys can't be pulling down very much cash for very long. Europe cannot handle the influx of players. Their owners will soon begin to see a loss or a demand for more salaries. Every player has lost money this year in comparison to his NHL salary, money that he is not getting back. The players will not make more money out of this new deal than they would have out of a 42.5 m cap.

The players can demand all they want, clearly the owners said "fine, we can afford it" Are they still not forcing the owners? It seems like you think the owner's have the right/responsibility to set salaries, but they don't have the right/responsibility to set salaries lower. I would be surprised if the Euro/Russian Leagues can employ that many players next year, should an NHL deal not be reached. And for the 300-400 who are not employed overseas or in some North-American cap-league now, they will be itchin' to play somewhere, anywhere. And now there is no draft -- so all those potential draftees won't be looking to join sides with "a union without a league"... Wake up, players!! Come to the table with a proposal now!l
MantaRay
In addition, most of the owner who paid to have NHL players are taking a bath financially. This is a short lived scenario for NHL players playing in Europe.
