I absolutely hate in when an application asks for an essay, and said essay is basically "tell me about yourself, and why you should be in this program." Drives me bat-sh!t crazy.

I feel like I'm repeating myself and have no rhythm, and rhythm is important to me when I'm writing an essay. If I don't have rhythm, I'm just blabbering with no purpose.

And the worst part of it is, this is an essay for a grad school application, for the Writing Studies program. So it can't suck.

Anyone (who has experience at such) interested in having a look-see when I'm done with it and giving it the red pen treatment? I'm usually the one editing my friend's works, but I'm feeling a little self-conscious on this one.

It's funny but I just had to do the exact same type of "Personal Statement" for my application to Columbia. While I don't know how well my plan worked for me, as I haven't gotten a repsonse yet, I looked at the essay as the "Story of Me and Why I Want to Be Here". I framed it this way:

1) Personal Annecdote on why I got into technology (because it's a technology management Masters)

2) School and work experiences that led me to my current career

3) Why I feel I'm ready for this program

4) What I want to get out of said program

If you like, send me a copy of your work and I'll give it a once over when you're done. Also, if you would like a copy of my personal statement, just so you have something to go by, just PM me and let me know.

Good luck!

Ok Mr K...when the hell did you get engaged? I tried sifting through your bookfaces but you play WAY too much mafia wars. God facebooks never tells me anything useful or interesting.

Back in January. I never announced it anywhere online except for changing my relationship status on Facebook. Not a lot of people noticed it anyway. Could be cause of Mafia Wars heh...

Sammy? Engaged? Congrats, buddy!

Thanks!

Congrats sam-o!

Thanks!

Nah, the two are not related. The place I usually got the pics from made it difficult to cut and paste and I kinda got bored with it for now. I'm sure I'll start that up again eventually.

So I figured I'd plug my new blog here. http://semanticsofsports.blogspot.com/ Basically, its a blog about the origins of sports terms. I'm doing it for my Senior Project (which is basically do whatever you want that you've never done before. It replaces my English final, so I'm happy about that :P). I don't know how permanent it really will be (the first post was mainly just an appeasement to my teacher), but I'll be updating it 2 times a week at least until school ends in late June. So check it out, let me know what you think, etc. And if you could post a comment on a post or two, that'd be awesome. This really isn't my comfort zone (writing is my comfort zone, just not posting it on the internet, haha), but I figured I'd give it a shot.

Liking the site, RSC. I hope you keep it up, it could be a very interesting blog if you keep going with it.

So I'm less than 24 hours out of college and I'm already bored out of my goddamn mind. I've been operating under constant pressure to have something done for so long that I don't know what to do with myself now.

Used to be, I could pop in a video game and play all day, but I can't even do that anymore. I don't know if I've just grown up, or grown less patient, or whatever. I used to be able to play a game, fail a mission 20 times, but work through it til I finally beat it. Now, if I fail a mission, I shut the game off and walk away.

Does anyone else find themselves less patient with video games as they grow older? Is it a lack of discipline that maybe I used to have as a kid but don't now? Lack of patience? Realization that beating a video game is not the most important thing in the world like it used to be?

Dude, I know exactly what you're talking about. I hadn't owned a video game system since I sold my PS2 to my roomate in 2006. Then last year I bought a PS3, played NHL09 (back when it was relatively new) and the new Grand Theft Auto a TON for a couple weeks. But then I just lost interest. I don't know what it was, but it was like I had reached my maximum level of video game enjoyment and it was time to do something else.

Of course, it's not like I did anything constructive with that time. I either spent my free time surfing between Facebook and NJDevs, watching TV, doing both at the same time, or downloading porn. Copious amounts of porn.

Here's wishing you better luck in your gameless endeavors.

I think your problem is that as you get older you're supposed to get better at video games so you shouldn't be failing missions that often in the first place.

Seriously though I can relate to this as well. I used to get really angry if I kept losing or failing missions etc, but now I just don't really care that much. I don't care at all for playing anything online because it is too personal for me. I like to play video games so I can basically put my brain on standby and kill some time or to have some fun with friends. Playing competitive games against people I don't know just doesn't appeal to me, but it probably would have when I was younger.

I have also noticed that without the pressure of exams and papers looming over my head, time absolutely flies by.

Just to comment on last's videogame issue, I'm pretty impatient with it as well, and I will use any resource available to help me win, outside of cheat codes. Online walkthroughs, players guides, ancient voodoo...I don't care, so long as it helps me through the game and doesn't kill it with spoilers.

I was actually playing NHL '10 last night and I lost 2 in a row in my season...I literally threw my controller across the room in disgust. Luckily, it hit my other chair and didn't smash into a million pieces. Now, granted, I had my cranky pants on last night, but I know what you mean when you say you've lost patience for gaming. My problem is, I just gte bored with it, kinda like DiG. I have a few games that I got maybe halfway through and never finished, the most recent is Bioshock, but for two reasons:

1) I absolutely stink at first person shooters, especially with the whole dual stick control scheme

2) I can't handle scary things jumping out and terrifying me. After a very tense portion of the game where the lights went out and I was slogging through waist deep water towards a creature happily overdosing on plasmids, I retraced my steps, thnking ahhh, nothing to worry about here when a monster jumps out of a "dead body drawer" and attacks me. I literally scream out loud, start shooting the ceiling and lose half my health. I then put down the game never to play it again...that was 2 months ago.

So, yeah last, I know exactly what you mean!

You are describing my life the last few days in eerie detail. Spooky.
