sundstrom, what do you think that would get us/what are you expecting? A Doug Weight/Craig Conroy (I remember you saying his name maybe aorund the tdl last year)? I'm not sure how much value Halischuk has right now.

that player just isn't available. centers are in short supply and no one's trading them. 26 is talking about doug weight and craig conroy - these are precisely the sort of well-past-their-prime options that we abandoned when we sent brendan shanahan packing. robert lang will come available at the deadline and we'll see what he's got, but he's in the same boat as those guys.

craig conroy was an off season move - he's not going anywhere now while calgary is good.

weight isn't the right guy now either - trade deadline, perhaps but likely not.

does this make sense from either side: halischuk + 2nd for matt stajan

Man, looking at the highlights, Rolston had an easy goal on that 3-on-2 right before the Knuble goal if he just pulled that puck to his forehand and chipped it in. The Caps D just totally broke down. Easy to say laying in bed watching on my laptop, I know...

And after watching the highlights I feel that much worse for Parise! He needs to bury one and he'll be on fire.

Sorry dont' want to rain on the parade but it's the truth. We tied a game and won a skills competition. It's good for the points but not good as an early trend. We won one game against a lame team. It's too early to panic def, but I'm def not happy with what we've seen so far. At least Brodeur looks to be back on track now the rest of the team has to get their game straight.

you are right.

Parise shouldve won the game in overtime for the Devils but he did not. we won the SKILLS COMPETITION and got a point for it. The Capitals got a point for the TIE. Good job NHL on getting rid of ties. FAIL!

I agree on the shootout nonsense...I don't care what the standings say, the Devils are 1-2-2 (old-style standings) as far as I'm concerned, but five games aren't nearly enough for me to categorize any of this as an early trend. As for what we've seen on the ice, right now it's a mixed bag, which is what I expected for October, with a new coach and new faces, and Elias not being in the lineup. I like that this team fights...even though I consider both games ties, battling back on the road to tie Tampa and Washington in the third period is encouraging, and a hotter Zach definitely would've buried an OT winner last night. Yeah, they've gotten a couple of bogus bonus points courtesy of the nonsense skills competition, but overall I'm pretty happy with the way things have gone. Could be a lot worse.

*sigh* Some people are never happy.

Maybe I'm kooky but my post sounded pretty happy to me.

I've always been of the belief that not all ties are equal, that despite the final x-to-x outcome, there's such a thing as a good tie or a bad tie...or simply a fair tie, in that two teams played equally well (or poorly), and neither deserved to win or lose. I'd categorize both Devils' "ties" to this point as good ones (fighting back from 3rd-period deficits to notch at least one point)...I'm sure Washington (and especially Tampa) have to be wondering "How the hell did we lose these games?", so from their perspective both games ended in bad ties. I think what I take from the Devils' 1-2-2 start (im my eyes) is that there's both positives and negatives, but enough positives to build off...as in "winning" all three games on this trip, and coming back twice to force OT in games where they were at times solidly outplayed.

To everyone's "anti-shootout" point, the one thing I did like from last night's game was how hard the Devils battled to win it in OT. Even this early in the season, they realize the value of winning games in OT and not just settling for the shootout, even though they are an excellent shootout team. Given their success in the shootout, they could have easily sat back and let it come, but they realize an extra point via a skills competition is nowhere near as impactful as an OT win in the playoffs. To me, that's just good coaching and a good team mentality.

Besides, 80% of the time, Parise scores on that first OT flurry, so how people are sticking their nose up at the win is beyond me. The Devs were clearly the better team when it counted last night, so I'm very pleased with last night's victory.

that's too much for matt stajan, haha. but yeah something like that makes sense, sure. i don't think stajan is a 2nd line center though.

ya this was what i thought when it happened but on second glance i'm not sure he had the space to do that. even so, typical rolston.

i guess my point is the devils could acquire him without doing anything really negative to the team.

he's a good faceoff guy - has offensive ability, and is a better solution than anyone else i can think of at this point in time.

the devils MUST find a way to excise the 4th line - you cannot have 3 players on a team that you try to hide every game.

And that shift when Clarkson tied it up. That was a clip and save moment.

i really don't think the 4th line is 3 players that need to be hidden. i know they haven't played well. peters is obviously terrible and a liability every time he steps on the ice. pelley has really struggled but he's getting better every game, and the devils lived with him in 2008. pikkarainen and halischuk have been neither good nor bad, although pikkarainen obviously needs to stop taking penalties. when elias comes back i think/hope the devils intend on moving niedermayer or pandolfo down to the 4th line which gives it some credibility.

It's true some are just never happy here. A win is a win even if it is in the shootout. This is the way it is now in the "new" NHL, so we have to deal with it. 3-2 is a lot better than 1-2-2, so lets be happy that the Devils are 3-2 right now. It is suprising that the Devils have 2-wins in the shootout and the Rangers do not have any right now and have not been in any right now considering they were the king of shootouts last season.

Oh please. I don't think pointing out that the Devils' record is bloated by the skills competition means that people are unhappy. I've already said that I'm happy with how the road trip went, and I am...not because of the "wins", but because of the way they battled to avoid losses.

Besides, if this was the RANGERS off to this 3-2 start, via 2 shootout wins, many here would be talking about how the Rangers were lucky, how their record is bloated, etc., and I know this because we did that exact same thing last season.

And why is it "surprising" that the Devils have 2 shootout wins in 2 opportunities when the Devils have more SO wins than anyone else, and a very good SO record overall? Brodeur himself is now 30-14 in shootouts, so is it that much of a surprise that he could help win two of these in a row to start a season? And considering that the Rangers have a much different team and a (fairly) new coach, what does last year have to do with anything they're doing right now?

Might be a little too much for a guy who is already a healthy scratch for the Leafs.

I think for this team to win the 4th line maybe important.

I think a good strategy would be to actually have a 4th line that could score as a opposed to 6 TOI guys. When Elias comes back we may see that.

We'll need one of our rookie forwards not named Begfors to end up being a real NHLer to really roll 4 lines.

What a big win. The last SAVE in the shootout was so big! Marty was perfect. The penalty taken by the Caps in overtime... and huge saves by Theodore! The Devils nearly won it about 3 times, but the wall in the goal stood there and did very very well! Kudos to Theo. Another great player - Rob Niedermayer, one of the best guys on the ice, as noticed in the other thread. On to Thrashers at The Rock!

Yeah this is all I was trying to say. I'm not trying to be super negative just trying to put it into perspective is all. I agree it's too early and their play has gotten better and that's encouraging.
