caron14
This is nuts... They should wait the end of the offseason before making odds. So much thing could change...
Triumph
Right now I like Dallas, New Jersey, and Tampa on that list. Depending on the Sharks' offseason they could be a good bet too. But yeah, caron's right, seems a bit silly to bet on that now.
CarpathianForest
Vancouver should not be that high up.

Bartholomew Hunt
Bleacher report had us at like 24-1 I think. So it all depends where you get your odds from

Neb00rs
The Predators seem a bit low for a team that finished 19th in the league in points. Maybe they got a Western Conference downgrade? But this would still not explain the Oilers and Jets were given better odds than them - and the Flames the same odds. The Canucks I kind of get. Vegas doesn't care who actually has the best chance to win, but rather what they expect people to bet, and then they act accordingly. Canadian teams will always have higher future odds than they deserve because fans of those teams will drop a hail mary bet on them. The Penguins will always be higher than they should because they are a public team and no shock the Blackhawks and Bruins are 1-2 as favourites due to their giant followings. Derek21
I would take the Ducks at 14/1. Great core and young talent. Edited June 15, 2014 by Derek21
Chimaira_Devil_#9
Hate to say it but that minnesota team another year older and wiser looks good at 18/1.

Interesting, I don't know much about betting so thanks for that. The one thing I would still say though is that all the Canadian teams are 12th or worst in odds. They are just higher than some better teams. Clearly strength of team means something, or why would the Blues be so high?
Devils Pride 26
How does sports betting work? If I put 100 on buffalo and they won I would make 7,500?
Triumph
How does sports betting work? If I put 100 on buffalo and they won I would make 7,500? Yes. I had $20 on the Devils at 50-1 in 2012. Didn't quite happen.

I honestly was thinking just the opposite, they have questions in goal and are in the toughest division.

They want odds that are somewhat fair and entice gamblers. You don't want to jack the Leafs odds up so high that no one would bet on them, but you also don't want to give a team with such a large fan base fair odds either. The average person would probably take the Blues and Kings over the Penguins, but because of Crosby and Malkin, Pitt is a fairly public team, so they have better odds because more people would throw some cash on them. I don't think Vegas worries too much about NHL futures. The action must be miniscule compared to other sports. William D'Aquila
every dollar you bet you get 75 back. world cup had some good bets - italy at 25 to 1 and dzeko as top scorer was 48 to 1 if i recall

No, this is right, the bets are scaled a bit in anticipation of action on the most popular teams. Most futures bets you can't take the other side of them. So I can't bet $15 against $2 that the Blackhawks will win the Stanley Cup. This gives the casino no reason to offer a fair line - with a normal bet, if the line is 'wrong', the market will adjust it. Regardless, this menas you can find some real values as a result, especially on teams that don't attract much action. 50-1 on the Devils in the 2011 offseason was insane - they should've been half that. Devils Pride 26
Yes. I had $20 on the Devils at 50-1 in 2012. Didn't quite happen. For a gambling noob, where do you place such bets? I'm assuming online is illegal/unverified. Atlantic City?

Only place sports gambling is legal, AFAIK. NJ and Delaware have been trying to get it legalized, but no dice as of yet. I know all of the pro sports leagues either sued or were threatening to sue over it. Edited June 16, 2014 by MadDog2020

ghdi
This is nuts... They should wait the end of the offseason before making odds. So much thing could change... Its kind of the point. They're futures bets. They set odds this far in advance and then you may have gotten a steal if you bet a longshot who ends up a year from now winning.
