Rolston on Waivers

We couldn't even get under the cap really to start the season. The way things go around here, it's hard to say that they'll do something to get under the cap. Anyways, if you guys are happy to have 3.5 mil against the cap next year for Pandolfo, Rolston, and Peters not to play then fine. We're already struggling, that 3.5 million would have been very useful in the off season.

Ask yourself this. would you rather have rolston at 5 or a different player at 2.5?

It basically frees up Salvador's space if he even comes back.

Peters and Jay are only a 1 mil cap combined hit next year.

Arnott at 4.5 and Langs at 2.8 plus moose at 1.5 are coming off the books after this year as well.

I am quite sad.

I was a huge supporter of this move, and was calling for the signing of Rolston for months before it happened. It seemed to make so much sense at the time. I don't think many people would have seen it turning out like this so soon.

Hopefully there is a move at the end of this.

Wait wait wait ... now I'm really confused. If he isn't claimed on waivers, he'll be back in the lineup? I thought that, once waived, the only way to get back with the big club was to go on re-entry waivers. Like re-entry is the way to re-enter the team, so to speak.

I believe that would only be if you assigned the player to the minors after waiving him. You can waive a player and then not re-assign him, which it sounds like the Devils are planning to do with Rolston, at least for tomorrows game. I don't know what the window is, but the Devils have some sort of length of time where they can re-assign him once he clears waivers, but they aren't required to.

Ah OK, that makes sense.

I'd like to thank Professors Tri and 731 for their patience and instruction in Waivers 101 today.

I just pray that this is the first of some trash clearing moves. The Rolston signing, despite looking good at the time, has to be Lou's worst blunder post lockout. It's just a terrible contract with an absolute sh!t return. I think Brian is a good guy and you kind of wish things turned out better, but there is just no way he can justify the #'s he is making. The guy is probably worth a fifth of what he is making at most.

Rolston out the door followed by Clarkson. Unless the kid takes some skating lessions and understands that he is not a skilled player, he really can't be out the door soon enough imo. Even then, his contract is just awful as well.

I'm sorry if this hasn't already been explained, but can someone please explain it for me? Say he goes through waivers without anyone sticking a claim, we still pay his $5m salary/year?

From my understanding (which is loose, at best), because Rolston signed his contract after his 35th birthday, the only way to shed any of his cap hit is if someone claims him off waivers, re-entry waivers or if he is traded (but he has a NTC, so that's unlikely).

If he's claimed, bye bye cap hit.

If no one claims him, the Devils can keep him in Newark or send him to Albany. In either case, his full cap hit stays on the books.

If he's sent to Albany, he can be put on re-entry waivers, at which point other teams will have a 24-hour window to claim him at half the cap hit, with the Devils on the hook for the other half.

If he is still unclaimed, the Devils will have to wait a minimum of 30 days before beginning the waiver dance a second time.

Sound about right?

There's no way that Lou decided to do this on a whim just to test the waters. He made a deal with some team that they would claim him on re-entry waivers. There's no other reason why he would decide to do this now, unless there's someone coming back that wouldn't have fit under the cap while he was here, but we won't really save any space unless he's claimed. I'm 100% sure that Lou made a deal with another team to do this now and they will claim Rolston on re-entry waivers for half of his prorated salary, which at this point would only be 1.61mil if I did my math correct. His prorated salary rounded out to 3.22mil, so half of that is 1.61mil.

If my math is wrong or my understanding of waivers/re-entry waivers, please correct me.

Finally, someone posted the right numbers. A team claiming Rolston on re-entry waivers will pay approx. 1.6 mill for this year and approx. 2.5 mill next year, along with us as well. I can't make up my mind whether a team is willing to do this, Rolston could be a good powerplay specialist and veteran leader for the price tag, but saying that, not sure if someone bites!!!! Look forward to the end of the week to find out!!!

I'm just not gonna get my hopes up. You would like to think Lou has something already in the works but I don't know. There is no way in hell any team is taking him @ 5 million and I'm not confident that anybody would pay for a corpse @ 2.5 million either.

Lose every damn game if you want, but PLEASE just dispose of the sh!t on this roster any way possible and as soon as possible.

And now we can have a laugh or shed a tear at these quotes:

**Giving Rolston four years at age 35 is also a bit of a risk. If he drops off, the Devils are stuck with his cap hit for all four years, even if he retires (unless it's a Mogilny situation with an injury).

"I know people who when they're 35, they're going on 40 and I've had people who were 28 going on 40," Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said. "In Brian's case here, he's not a player at 35 years old. We look at him like a 30-year-old player. The way he keeps himself in shape and certainly the values he has as far as off the ice, we don't look at him as 35-year-old player. Age is a number. It has to do with exactly what he can bring and what he has. So, no, I'm not concerned."

"Maybe three years from now I will (be)," Lamoriello added, laughing, "But right now I'm not."

The sad part is he did look 30 in Minny in his last game, and the day he played his first game with NJ, he looked close to 40. Can't explain it.
