Default
Edmonton deals Pronger to Anahiem Chris Pronger, the biggest name on the summer trade block is going to California. The Anaheim Ducks have traded one roster player, one non-roster player and several conditional high-end draft picks to the Oilers in exchange for Pronger. Pronger, 31, put up 56 points and a plus-2 rating during the 2005-2006 regular season and was a stalwart for the Oilers during their playoff run to the Stanley Cup final, recording 21 points and a plus-10 rating in 24 games. The 2000 Hart and Norris Trophy winner is regarded as one of the very best defenders in the league, and joins a Ducks defence corps that includes 2004 Norris Trophy winner Scott Niedermayer. Pronger has 456 points and a plus-127 rating in an 802-game career that has seen him play in Hartford, St. Louis and Edmonton. He also has 72 points and a plus-25 rating in 109 career playoff games. The 6-foot-6, 220 pound defenceman signed a five-year, $31.25-million contract with the Oilers last August, then surprised the team with his request for a trade shortly after the season due to personal reasons. IAmCanadian27
Wow! So basically they'll have one of Nieds and Pronger out for almost the whole game. Their defense is seriously sick now. They had Lupul's name in there as the "one roster player" before, but they've since changed the story.
Elias 2662
I seriously hope ohis wife likes Cali. Who am I kidding though of course she will! And yeah, I wonder if the Ducks gave up Lupul and Ryan or maybe Perry/Getzlaf along with a first rounder or two.
'7'
hold my opinion until I see the players, but I hate the Ducks. They are, sadly, a cup contender next season. Let's hope that team falls apart.
sundstrom
wow. that is a serious defense. good job by anaheim. they had the young talent (many say the best minor league in hockey) to get that trade done. glad it's out west.
SC Devs Fan
Pronger and Nieds... that is scary. I echo above, glad we won't be seeing that pair 8 times a year.
hattrick
The Ducks have some formidable D now with Nieds & Pronger.

thefiestygoat
Wow, the Ducks now have an amazing D just alone with Niedermayer and Pronger. Great move for them.

Don
same old fvckin nhl.Nothing changes. You don't even know what the deal is yet and you're condemning the NHL? And what does the NHL have to do with it? Did they *TELL* Prongers wife to not like Edmonton? Edited July 3, 2006 by Don
Devilsdude530
She'll love the OC. We host the Ducks in December/January, so we don't totally avoid them. The out-of-conference schedule sees us visit the Northwest (LATE NIGHT HOCKEY!) and the pacific comes here. Were gonna see some sick defensemen in the Pac: -Jovo & Boynton -Pronger & Nieds -Blake & Norstrom -Zubov & Daley -San Jose has a decent group
insanity_gallops
They may have given up Smid as part of this deal, he was their star defensive prospect. My guess is Smid and Perry.
Don
FYI - According to sports radio in Edmonton, the deal is Lupul, a prospect and picks. Edmonton fans are LIVID that they lost their star player for Lupul, but that's short term thinking. I think long term, Edmonton wins this one. insanity_gallops
Long-term, probably -- but I doubt that'll placate the Oil faithful if the Ducks get a Cup out of this deal.
Don
BTW - there is a rumour (and only a rumour) on Edmonton radio that the prospect is Bobby Ryan!!!
Don
Ignore that rumour. Better source here (Oiler scouting staff member): Pronger for Lupul, Ladislav Smid, 2007 1st, 2007 2nd, and if the Ducks win the cup next year a 2008 1st Smid is a D-man taken 9th overall in 2004. Edmonton fans may not like the return, but realistically the Oilers only gave up 2 overrated players in Brewer and Woywitka plus Doug Lynch. Brewer is probably a #3 defenseman on a good team, Woywitka is starting to look like a #5 and Lynch is a journeyman type. Add the fact that everyone knows the Oilers have to move Pronger, plus $6+ million is a lot of salary (even if it's Pronger and he's underpaid), and the Oilers don't have a tremendous amount of bargaining power. Satans Hockey
Can you blame him for feeling this way based on the Oilers recent history???I can't. Yes he should be upset but saying it's the same old NHL makes no sense. Like Don already said it's not the NHL's fault his wife hated Edmonton. coldply123
Lupul is a heck of a player. Oilers have a nice stock of forwards
Triumph
Considering Pronger is signed for 4 or 5 more seasons, this is a steal for Anaheim. Lupul will be a star but Smid isn't projected to be more than a 3rd defenseman. Edmonton lost Chris Pronger and haven't replaced him with anyone who can come close to taking his minutes. They also haven't re-signed Spacek and Tarnstrom or Samsonov.
