Carey Price Meltdown

Not sure how much everyone has followed the Habs-Bruins series or the Habs season, but it has been a nightmare series and second half for Carey Price. Playing in the most pressure filled spots in all of North American sports, Price has cracked over the last few months.

In game 2 he was pulled, and coming out of the locker room a fan was heckling him. So what does he do?

Last night it got pretty bad. The crowd was booing him all night, and after making an easy save, he got the fake cheer after an easy save. So he channels his inner Patrick Roy and salutes the crowd.

Things got worse as the fans started tauning their own goalie with 'Caareyyyy' chants

(around 45 seconds)

Pretty unfair for Habs fans to put everything on Carey Price. The kid is 21 and is going through some serious struggles.

It's pretty easy for most fans to forget that these are real people on ice and that they go through some real struggles. A little bit of pressure and a little bit of heckling is to be expected, it comes with the territory - but people are certainly laying it on thick when it comes to Price.

He's going to have to find a way to work through it.

Its not surprising about the Habs self-destruction it all started with the Huet trade last year. Forcing Price to be Roy/Dryden before he was ready.

+1

I questioned what the hell Gainey was thinking the minute news of that trade came out last season. He ditched Price's safety net for a second round pick.

Habs fans are fvcking retarded. Gee Habs fans, ever think it was a little unfair to start referring to the guy as "Jesus Price"? If anything they should rip Gainey for trading Huet in the first place and putting that type of undeserved pressure on a 21-year old kid. Not everyone is Patirck Roy. He'll be traded in the off-season- no way he can keep playing in that city and have any kind of decent career.

That's pretty bogus on the hometown fans, IMO.

I agree and they are suppose to support carey through the good and the bad times/games/series'. Habs fans are pretty rough and the kid is only 21 and has a long way to go in his career in the NHL. Carey needs to grow some thick skin too and not worry what the hometown fans do.

IMO, Gainey made a mistake in that series with the Bruins. After they went down 0-3 in the series, Gainey should have started Jaroslav Halak and see if they could at least win a game in the series.

If you look at Huet in Washington and I'd say see him in Chicago too, but I don't think you can find him since the bench may not be big enough for the backup goalie :P

... it wasn't a mistake trading the crappy goalie... but putting this kid into one of the worst pressure cookers in SPORTS... yeah.. BAD idea....

he almost needs a trade for his psyche

that's one place I'd NEVER sign as an UFA

you can say that about the people on THIS board too :P

Yankee fans are the same way

Cowboy fans are CERTAINLY the same way

any fan base of a storied franchise (or one in the middle of a top-end run)... the fans get a wee bit unappreciative of how TOUGH it is to be a success EVERY year

True, but the Habs fans take it an even higher level. There isn't an ounce of rational thought behind some of the sh!t they pull... they are placing the blame on the wrong guy here, but Gainey won't catch the heat he deserves because he's Bob Gainey, a Habs legend. These are the same people who ran Patrick freakin' Roy out of town!!!!! HOW DO YOU DO THAT!!!!!???? :P

Every year? when was their last cup '93? I think they have a right to be upset and impatient.

It's not prices fault tho, they def took out their frustrations on the wrong guy, when your team score 6 goals in 4 games you aren't going to win no matter who you have in net.

there's 2 other 20 year old goalies in the playoffs right now (although mason is not long for this world). price can play in this league, and him being traded would be an absolute disaster for the habs, not only would they be getting pennies on the dollar at his present value, but they'd also be dealing away one of the future top goalies in the game. he's just got to fight through it - montreal actually has a very healthy outlook as they have a ton of young players and are losing a lot of unwieldy contracts this off-season.

Ah, Montreal. They definitely take their sport seriously. Probably juuuuuussssstttt a bit too seriously.

Remember the O'Byrne kid? The one who scored an own goal at home? They sing-songed him off the ice too.

Add to the Price saga the stories of late night partying that were going around.

It's a mad place; if you're winning there's probably nowhere else you'd rather be. Lose 4 straight to Boston of all teams, at home, and those people just aren't going to listen to reason and trying to get them to only will make them madder. It's like, find the most manic poster here, and put thousands of them in the stands there. Add beer, and look out.

This is Montreal's own fault. They rushed this kid into the AHL 2 years ago and made him the starter there for the playoffs, then the next season, they rushed him into the NHL before he was ready. Gainey needs to make his own decisions, not the ones the Montreal media wants. Price should have gotten at least oen full year in the AHL before this season, and he should have had some veteran help if they demanded he be the starter.

Halak was a more consistant goalie and somehow doesn't start 1 game in the playoffs? That makes no sense. Did Gainey expect Price to turn it all around on the verge of elimination? If they lose this kid because of these boneheaded decisions, they will never live it down. Just like they'll never live down the Roy trade.

Price was absolutely excellent last year - a .920 save percentage as a rookie. This year he got injured and struggled, but he is still Montreal's goalie of the future.

Gainey made the mistake of not picking up someone like Joseph at the trade deadline. I can't see how any FA would want to go to Montreal with those fans. Your either on top of the world or they attack you.

The pressure clearly got to him all year and he made a number of dumb decisions. He pulled his groin in warmups and didn't tell anyone and played the game...missed a good amount of time because of it.

Montreal isn't going to trade him, but Gainey should have went with Halak after game two. Montreal is going to have a crazy off-season. 10 UFAs and Gainey did not have contact with any of them about an extension during the year. The rumour is he wants to make room for Vinny.

He is the new Steve Penny in Montreal. Montreal has no choice with Price now, I only hope his confidence and the pressure aren't too much for him.

Yep. And he totally crumbled in the playoffs last year. All I'm saying is he isn't ready for the weight of that franchise on his shoulders just yet. It's too much for most 21 year olds to handle. The kid has an awesome future. He would have benefited from a veteran back-up. (I thought that was why they signed Denis.)
