Would it really be paranoia? A home loss against the terrible Islanders plus a Panthers road win against the hottest team in the NHL would be a devastating blow to our playoff chances.

It would be deeply alarming for sure.  The paranoia would be people making the case Florida will never lose another game now that they have destiny in their hands.

#1 in The Atlantic is HUGE. You either face a wild-card team or a Toronto team who’s now set the franchise record for points in a season.

This is just yet another example of how stupid this format is and makes the regular season absolutely pointless. There's no reason that Tampa/Boston should be facing Toronto in the first round. It's so stupid.

But rivalries! Original Six! Tradition and Legacy maaaaaaaaan!

fvck the current format, go back to 1-8, the fact the best matchups happen round 1 is beyond stupid.

They've wound up trying to play both sides of the fence, ensuring more division matchups early while still leaving wiggle room for some non-division matchups.  It's like having six of one and half a dozen of the other.  In past years it was the Metro that got screwed on it with the Caps and Pens playing insanely early.  Now it's unbalanced the other way, at least given the top teams in that division are better than the top teams in ours in terms of points.

Obviously don’t want to count chickens quite yet but Boston now has a 5-1 lead late in the 2nd and is playing really, really well
Remember what happened the last time you tried to not jinx something?

Nice that reality's finally setting in on the Florida dream run now that they're playing real teams again (and that Ottawa was actually one cream of the crap team that did help out), now we just can't give them any life again the next two days.

A devils win tonight would be... devastating.

Which is nice.

It would be annoying more than devastating atm, we'd still have 'control of our destiny' no matter what happens tonight.  Losing BOTH this weekend would be devastating though, especially with for all intents and purposes only a two-point cushion since we have no tiebreakers.

I just hate that the regular season is made virtually pointless because they aren't rewarding teams for doing well. You had a 110+ point season? That's nice have fun playing another 100+ point team in the 1st or 2nd round.

The 1vs8 match ups were the most fair and there's been plenty of upsets over the years because hockey isn't like basketball. Go back to 3 divisions, add more divisional games that sell out buildings and the only difference I'd make is that divisional winners are only guaranteed a playoff spot and not a top 1-3 seed.

This current format doesn't create any new rivalries. Colorado and Detroit which the NHL loves to yap about their 90s rivalry weren't even in the same division back then either.

The NHL does a lot of stupid sh!t because it's generally run by out of touch idiots.

What is devastating to FLA is that they seem to be running out of gas.  Their last two games ended the same way, with nothing left.

Yeah this is where you have to give the Devils the nod over Florida...they didn't run their top players into the ground on their trip from hell and even at the tail end of it they still had enough juice left to beat Tampa on a back to back.

Florida about to fall to 5-5-1 in their last 11 games, and learning (the hard way) that when you have to go on a crazy tear just to be able to start to sniff a WC berth, that you don't get to level off and hover...they needed to stay hot, but simply couldn't...even this soon-to-be three game winless streak is killing them.  And of course, not once did they ever actually have a WC spot to call their own, even for a day.  They're not dead-dead yet, but yeah, tougher opponents, a slew of road games and an Uber-compressed schedule are killing their run.  I'm not surprised at all.  Through it all, I was actually more worried about the Devils themselves (the kids tiring and their goaltending) than I really was about Florida continuing to win the majority of their remaining games.

Feels like three Devils points this weekend probably puts a stake in the Panthers.  Hope the Devils can get it done.
