According to the NY Post:

SATHER SET TO QUIT AS COACH

By LARRY BROOKS

February 25, 2004 --

Confronted with his team's complete collapse under his direction from behind the bench, Glen Sather has decided to step down as coach of the Rangers following a meeting yesterday with Garden CEO Jim Dolan, sources have told The Post.

Sather, who will maintain his roles as president and GM of the club, is expected to hand the coaching responsibilities to either Tom Renney or Terry O'Reilly, his assistants, both of whom have head coaching experience, Renney with the Canucks in the mid-'90s, and O'Reilly with the Bruins in the late '80s.

There is a possibility, however, that Sather might offer the job to Jim Schoenfeld, currently GM of the teanm's top affiliate, the AHL Hartford Wolfpack. Schoenfeld, who also has extensive NHL head coaching experience, was an assistant for the Rangers last year.

An announcement is expected prior to today's practice. The 12th-place Rangers, 4-13-2 in their last 19 games and 14 points behind the eighth-place Islanders, next play tomorrow night at the Coliseum against the Isles.

Three weeks ago, on Feb. 2, Dolan said that Sather would remain behind the bench for the remainder of the season, even as the team was in the midst of its slide on a $70 million treadmill to obscurity. It was just last Tuesday that Sather said he would remain as head coach for the remainder of the season.

But the combination of the team's disgraceful play in losing 7-3 to the Devils Saturday and 4-1 to the Canadiens Monday, both at home, both without even the facade of a fight, and the amount of work facing the GM with the March 9 trade deadline approaching, caused Sather to reassess his position. Perhaps the prospect of facing angry fans chanting for his dismissal throughout the final seven home games

Damn.... worst news I've heard from ranger$ land all year.

I was hoping for a lifetime contract for Sather.

Not to worry, he's still GM - for now anyway. That still leaves plenty of time for outrageous contracts and horrid player selection. Glen has more than enough time to continue his obliteration of the franchise. Hope Bobby can still sleep at night knowing another one of his coach's got "fired".

About time. Now it's time to start from scratch (the fans are used to the 1995 ticket price increase by now (They cant screw them anymore). They no longer have to be afraid the customer will get mad if they rebuild. PS: And we complain about Mgmt.

Just conformed on ESPN...

Where? Link?

TSN is doing their usual head in the sand:

"Larry Brooks of the New York Post is reporting that...."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

In any case, I look at this as a great, great move. This will mean less time at the rink and more time to make ridiculously stupid trades. Maybe he'll pick up Brian Savage off waivers.... or maybe THEY will nab Odelien before he's taken off the market.

for better or worse...sather's defining moment as ranger GM will be how he handles this years trade deadline.

if boston, toronto, dallas, whomever is offering a player plus a #1 for leetch - sather has to do the right (NOT POPULAR) thing.

while i think kovalev is 90% gone (at least), he's got some interesting decisions on barnaby and rucinsky.

if sather is there going forward, if he wants 7 seasons not to turn into 8 or 9, he's got to make the right moves now.

Also heard it this morning on ESPN Radio. They're going the same route as TSN: "The NY Post is reporting that..."

BG, I disagree. I think whatever Sather does at the trade deadline is a reaction to his true "defining moments" as GM of the team. But it's hard to pin a four-year mess on one moment. There's a lot of moments that make up an ugly picture. You guys deserve better, and for your sake, I hope Dolan comes to his senses, fires Sather and brings in a competent exec like Dean Lombardi....who in turn will hire a real coach like Francis or Quenneville.

That's not a surprise...

'FIRE SATHER!' actually worked...

Well, technically, it didn't: He quit.

At least he's still going to be GM, which means players like Jason Smith, Ryan Smyth and Ethan Moreau shouldn't cancel those plane tickets to LaGauardia just yet...

<JESTER>

So wait, Sather the GM didn't have the guts to fire Sather the Coach, so Sather the Coach just got fed up and quit?

He'll still be GM and that doesn't solve anything for the Rangers. They need to clean house and get players that are hungry, where the majority of their leaders have not won a Cup, and stockpile draft picks. They also need to invest their money in the best scounts in the business. As Conte and the Devils have proven, it starts with great scouting.

I've said for years that the beginning of the end for them was when they lost Jeff Beukeboom. Since then, there has not been anyone to fear on their team.

That's a drop in the bucket compared to that franchise's major problem, poor management. But I'm sure Beukeboom would be happy to hear the compliment.

The Rangers have always brought in physical players, though, from Fleury to McCarthy to Lindros to Kasparaitis to Holik to Purinton to Karpa to Kasparaitis. I think that has been part of their problem is that they're so obsessed with physical players that they don't look at how they fit into the whole.

I just don't think it's possible to build a winning team with the mentality that Glen Sather and the Rangers exude. They hardly practice, Sather's often not at the practices, Sather doesn't match lines, he trades for things he doesn't need, he doesn't bench people who deserve it. It's like they have Cup hangover from 1994 every year.

Confirmed:

According to TSN.ca:

Sather steps aside as Rangers head coach

TSN.ca Staff

2/25/2004

New York - New York Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather announced Wednesday that he will relinquish his duties as head coach to focus solely on the managerial duties of the hockey club. Sather has appointed Tom Renney as the club's head coach on an interim basis. Assistant coaches Terry O'Reilly and Ted Green will remain on the coaching staff in their current roles.

Renney, who becomes the Rangers 32nd Head Coach in franchise history, will be assuming his second head coaching position in the National Hockey League. From June, 1996 through November, 1997, he served as Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks. Renney joined the Rangers on July 31, 2000 as Director of Player Personnel and was promoted to Vice President, Player Development on June 21, 2002. In that position, he oversaw all facets of the team's amateur scouting operations, while also assisting with the professional scouting process and player development within the organization.

For the last two summers, Renney has been instrumental in establishing an off-season conditioning and skills camp for several Rangers prospects in Calgary, Alberta. On July 21, 2003, Renney joined the Rangers coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Prior to his return to the National Hockey League in New York, Renney held the position of Vice President, Hockey and Head Coach of the Canadian National Team. During the 1999-2000 season, he guided the team to a 27-23-6 record in 56 international contests, capturing the 2000 Nagano Cup and placing third in the 2000 Spengler Cup. Renney rejoined the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA) as its Vice President, Hockey in May, 1998.

Renney began his affiliation with the Canadian National Team at the start of the 1992-93 season, and was appointed Head Coach of Team Canada in August, 1993. In 1994, he coached Canada's Olympic hockey team to a silver medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Later that year, he served as an assistant coach on Team Canada's gold medal-winning team at the World Championships in Bolzano, Italy. He also coached the National Team to a bronze medal in the 1995 World Hockey Championships in Stockholm, Sweden and a silver medal in the 1996 World Championships in Vienna, Austria.

In 1999, Renney led the Canadian National Junior Team to a silver medal at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

A native of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Renney began his coaching career in 1991 with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League (WHL), posting a record of 101-37-6 in 144 games over two seasons. His .714 winning percentage ranks as the all-time highest mark in Canadian Hockey League history. While with the Blazers, he captured consecutive WHL titles, along with a Memorial Cup Championship.

Sather, 60, posted a record of 22-29-7-4 in 62 games behind the New York bench this season. Since adding head coaching duties to his title on January 30, 2003, after relieving Bryan Trottier, he has charted a 33-39-11-7 record in 90 contests. In 932 NHL matches, Sather's career coaching record stands at 497-307-121-7.

It's about time, Sather was trying to coach the Rangers like the Edmonton Oilers circa 1985. He was not matching his lines and pairing his lines and defensemen up like an idiot (Poti and Leetch together come on)

Anyway, this will give him more time to dismantle the team and hopefully build a proper team that can win.
