Based on what I've seen, I think there are some good fans there but how can a struggling franchise survive unless this deal turns out better than it looks? Lou robbed Waddell blind. The rationale for why the Thrash did it is understandable. Kovalchuk screwed them. So, he took what he thought was the best package. Oduya maybe needed a change due to the contract. Stick him on a revamped blueline that includes Enstrom, Bogosian, Kubina and Hainsey and that's not bad. Bergfors who knows. Cormier better pan out and overcome the lack of discipline. The Thrash boast some solid players up front (Peverley, Little, Antropov, Max, Armstrong) including cornerstone Evander Kane, who's going to be a big time player. But the goaltending is still a question mark.

For the Devils, it's a no-brainer. Nothing of substance was given up. Plus they get Martin back and Clarkson. Kovalchuk changes the dynamic. Maybe they just decided they'll outscore the Caps. Kinda weird for a team that prides itself on D which to be honest, is weakened. It's going to be weird to see Kovalchuk as a Devil because I can't picture a floater like him playing for Lemaire. How's that going to work? This is the same guy Chico trashed during a Devils' come from behind road win over Atlanta after he made no attempt in the neutral zone and McAmmond potted the winner. Even Mogilny knew where the defensive end was. And this deal is similar. There certainly should be a lot of incentive. Cup. Big contract. Are the Devils as comprised good enough to win it all?

I remember that game, where Kovalchuk looked out of it and didn't make much effort on either side of the play, but this is gonna put a big jump in the team and these lines are gonna look real good after the Olympic break. I get to seem them vs the Flyers on Wednesday!!! sweett

ha ha! i surfed over to the site as i do every day to catch up on some of the latest devils news and witty little threads...

and the website was crashed...i immediately knew what that meant and went straight over to tsn.ca

holy cow! the devils are going for it this year...love it! this spring is going to be fun...

really bummed that oduya was thrown under the bus, getting sent to ATL must be a nightmare for him...wonder if ekford gets the call?

poor bergfors, wonder if he will pan out down there?

Does anyone think lou had this planned out at the start of the season?

He's that good a GM that i would not put it past him...

anyone dissing Waddell should take a second look at this deal...i think he got what he could given the circumstances.

decent trade for the thrashers, but the devils are clearly a cup contender now...no doubt about...this just rocks!

oduya was a streaky player at best, with a horrible contract he earned on 3/4ths of a season.

Bergfors..., an enigma... gonna bite us for sure if kovy doesn't resign. I have a feeling he'll be a hejduk type player..

Cormier, a good player. but we have a lot of these solid two way players in the system.

the first rounder is gonna hurt though...

Not really, by the time that 1st rounder evolves into any type of useable player Marty's tank will be on "E" if he's till playing at all. Most likely LL will be looking for retirement as well.

He knows he's got a window and if your going to trade a 1st rounder at some point at the deadline, it must as well be for one of the top 3 gamechanging forwards in the league.

Where's El Diablo, LD, and the doom crew now huh?

I heard about this while watching Rangers - Capitals game last night.

And I think it's pretty funny how so many people here were like "Come on, it's NEVER gonna happen!!" So all I can say is: In Your Face! Haha.

Really excited about this, and awesome to get Salmela back. So welcome Kovy and Anssi

I was in that group and you can in my face all you want, this trade is only postive if one or both of these events take place:

1) We win the cup

2) Kovalchuk signs a resonably priced long term deal.

If neither of these things happend its a total bust.

Im not to bothered about Oduya, to think we plucked him out of sweden and have mannaged to use him in as a main peice in a deal like this is all credit to Lou and the scouting staff.

I hate the loss of Bergfors (this will be compounded if we dont achieve either 1 or 2). A lot of time and effort went into developing his game and to waste that for half a season of Kovlachuk will again hurt the organisation if we dont achieve 1 or 2.

I will also be one of the few people on here who will be dissapointed with the loss of Cormier. What has this team lacked for the last few years, a gritty two way forward with a scoring touch and good hands. What did we just send off to Atlanta? exactly that.

The 1st rounder is of no concern to me, the Devils drafting the last few years has been so good i imagine that they will turn that second rounder into a very decent prospect (and i think fliping the 2nds was an extremly shrewd move by Lou).

Im not going to lie the whole thing has been very exciting for Devils fans, but there is a long, long way to go before anyone can make judgment on this deal.

It's funny... the reason I thought this WOULD happen was because it seemed so off-the-wall and out-of-character for Lou... shows he can still surprise us and isn't afraid to take risks.

Totally disagree here. This trade is a risk, but at this point the Devils need to take risks to win the cup. (Marty has what, 2 more seasons left on his contract?) I'm completely happy that Lou is willing to make moves like this that show it's still his goal to win the Cup, not just make the playoffs consistently.

So we trade a 28 year old $3.5 M defenseman who's been terrible this year, a rookie who at best will be a 2nd liner/PP specialist but who had been getting 3rd and 4th line minutes and was even a healthy scratch once, a head case who has thrown more than one highly publicized elbows this season including one that got him a season long suspension, and a late first round draft pick for one of the top forwards in the game? Not to mention we get Salmela back and swap 2nd round picks which is basically like getting our first back. This folks is why Lou Lams is in the HHOF.

Regardless of whether or not Kovalchuk re-signs, or whether or not the Devils win a Cup, this move absolutely cannot be disputed in any way. I love this move because Marty isn't getting any younger, and at his age his incredibly long prime can end at any time...the Devils should be in 100% go-for-it mode for as long as he's here, even if it means that, a few years from now, it might get a little ugly on the ice. This move may not work out, but Lou couldn't have been more right in taking this chance. I couldn't be happier with this.

Very well said.

No matter what happens from here on out, no one can say Lou didn't give the team the personnel to compete this season (and he did so in a way that didn't gamble away our future). Now it's on Jacques and the players.

Of course, a defenseman would be nice too .... :whistling:

I love this trade. I didn't think the Devs had a shot at him, or had any intrest to begin with. Now we have another bonifide scorer to go with Zach and Elias.

I think the idea of having ZZ Pops as the first line with Zubs/Elias/Kovi as the second line, although I wouldn't think it'd be terrible to stick Rolston on the second line and bump Zubs to the third.

I hated to see Oduya go, but to get Kovi, I'm fine with it. This team will be very, very dangerous come playoff time.

Lets get something straight right from the beginning, the Leafs just shut you out are about to do it again.. Kovalchuk is NO MATCH for the "monster" Dion, better keep your head up son, or this will be your first and last game as a Devil !!!

Go LEAFS GO.
