Based on the silliness of the market (Kubina, Richards, Savard) and the 5 year $45 million tag that the Rags supposedly offered (Brooks threw around this morning) this is steal.

I am glad that Patty was true to his word (watching him at the Stevens event I knew he would stay if he got the long term contract) and $6 million is a fair price.

Tri, is right: Time to order that Captains 26 jersey

I thought we would lose both, but now we have both locked up long term! What a Canada Day!!!!!

As for Gomez and Gionta, we get M&M at 7.2 off the books next year, Dan McG off at 2.2, plus I'm sure

the cap will go up something. That's over 10 mil in extra money currently used up to spend on those two guys.....should be plenty of dough. Oh, Brylin will most likely say goodnight.....unless we keep him to play 4th line centre.

I'm eatin' the crow and loving every bite.

I'll be the first to admit I didn't think Elias was staying. I couldn't be more thrilled to be so wrong.

Great job on both Patrik and Lou's parts...October can't get here fast enough.

I defintely have some crow to eat and would have stuck around to eat it last night...but I just couldn't stay up. I had to cover the ALMS race at Lime Rock and was so tired when I got back to my parents house that the last thing I saw on the site was the rumor of the Montreal offer.

OK, first, even though he will never see this or care, sorry, Patrick. I though he was gone. Looks like he cares more about being happy than about what he makes each year and being the highest paid player. And it looks like there is real, mutual respect between Patrick and Lou and that allowed this to get done.

Second, I'm not going to worry about negotiations in the future, It isn't worth it.

Too stressfull!

So, we have a captain!!!

Elias showed me something.

As long as his health is okay, I think Elias at 36 is a better value than Langs at 35, even with the larger contract.

I also think Lou will be able to lock up Gionta and Martin long-term once M&M&M's salaries are off the books, thats almost 10 million. I also dont think Rafalski is going to be worth more than what hes already making in another yr or so, so hopefully we can bring him back with no added salary.

As for Gomez, I think hes a huge question mark, he said he will test the market, and there is animosity from the past with Lou.

So I'm out in Morristown last night, and me and my friends are standing around having a few drinks in this bar. My one friend says to me "Did you see your Devils re-signed Elias?" I almost YELL -"THEY DID??!!" "Yes, it was just on the ESPN bottom line- 7 years" was his response. I this time do yell "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!" at the top of my lungs in the middle of the bar. I'm fairly sure people were looking at me funny at that point, but I didn't care. This is the best news we could ask for- Patty and Langs both locked up for the long-term in one day is something I definately didn't think I would see. It's a great day to be a Devils fan!!!!!!!!! :boogie::boogie:

PACT WITH THE DEVILS

ELIAS SPURNS BLUESHIRTS' OFFER

By LARRY BROOKS

July 2, 2006 -- There was one player and one player alone on the free agent market worth the contractual riches of a pre-cap NHL, and that was Patrik Elias. Late last night, he listened to his heart and remained in New Jersey after hours and hours of agonizing indecision.

He listened to Lou Lamoriello, too, who gave Elias a seven-year, no-trade contract worth $6M per that kept the league's 30-year-old pre-eminent left wing from accepting more lucrative offers from both the Rangers and Blackhawks.

On the day when flawed players with marquee names were signed by desperate teams for staggering sums of money, Sather's Blueshirts were believed offering a long-term deal worth $7M per to Elias, while the Blackhawks, according to sources, were in at $7.5M per.

But Elias, who was weighing his options at his offseason home in the Czech Republic, spurned the extra cash to remain with the only NHL organization for which he's played. A two-time Cup champion, Elias is the Devils' signature skater and is all but certain to be named team captain next season.

Having signed Jamie Langenbrunner earlier in the day to a five-year deal worth $2.8M per, the Devils have nearly $35.5M committed to the 2006-07 cap of $44M that expands to $48.8M until opening day. That amount includes $7.1M to Alexander Mogilny and Vladimir Malakhov. The Devils have yet to sign Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, Paul Martin or Colin White.

The Rangers had essentially put a freeze on business early in the afternoon in order to maintain the cap maneuverability necessary to add Elias. That cost the team the opportunity to get defenseman Jay McKee, who instead signed with St. Louis.

The Blueshirts had previously passed on defensemen Pavel Kubina, Willie Mitchell and Kim Johnsson before talks kicked into serious gear with Elias. Johnsson remains unsigned. Zdeno Chara, never a serious option, informed the team early in the day that he had no desire to reside in New York. Billy Guerin is attempting to gain a one-year, $3M deal from the Bruins.

Elias' decision leaves the door ajar for a return by Martin Rucinsky, who earlier had rejected a one-year offer from the club that was rescinded yesterday. Defenseman Karel Rachunek has signed a one-year contract worth $1.8M, but The Post has learned an anticipated three-year, $5.7 deal with Michal Rozsival has fallen through.

The Rangers did sign Carolina free agent Matt Cullen to a workable four-year, $11.5M deal to fill the vacancy created by the loss of Steve Rucchin. The 29-year-old, 6-2, 220-pound Cullen is of the north-south variety of forward the Rangers had been seeking. A strong skater with good work habits who plays both the wing and the middle, Cullen can kill penalties and play the point on the power play. Sought aggressively by both the Senators and Thrashers, he can play on either a checking or scoring unit.

Elias, however, was the prize on whom the Rangers had their eyes. After being swept in the first round of the playoffs, the Blueshirts have now lost five straight to the Devils.

Does anybody out there think that #4 may have given Patty a call to persuade him to stay? I think Lou probably had Scotty give Patty a phone call to remind him about Holik and just how lucky he is to be a potential "C" on a team that has a chance to win the Cup every year.

Did Scotty have anything to do with this? Only time will tell.

I think the "7 years" was the definite selling point.

I'm still in shock!!!

I think it was too.

Elias knows he'll slow down a little when he's older so he won't be worth 8 mill or whatever he was going to command on the market. Taking 6 mill a year and stretching it out is great. I think it's a good deal for both ends. 6 m is what he deserves. Plus he ends his career as a Devil.

Elias took a 1 million dollar a year discount and the Devils sign him to a very long term deal and you guys don't think the 2 sides are thanking each other for working together? The Devils' thanked Elias with a lot of cash and probably the captaincy. Elias thanked the team by working with them to make a deal that was feasible, a lot of players wouldn't have bothered and just sold out to the highest bidder.

Chara.

I will admit I thought Elias was gone too. I bought into all the reports.

I can't wait for (N)Єverson's next story. I thought the A-Line was coming back.

I'll eat bowls of crow if that's what makes people happy! While I still don't like Lou's attitude of 'screw the cap, I'll get under it by the deadline' he got the guy signed we all know he needed to sign. I hope on opening night everyone in the arena stands and cheers when Patrik is announced... he's the guy who made this happen.

OK, now on to our next worries, Gomer and little G. Ah, screw that, let's just enjoy this victory....!

NO!!!!!!!! Please no Arnott. Unless the new coach can knock the complacency out of him.

Julien is known as a motivator, using inspirational tactics first, yet still a disciplinarian.

Nonetheless, I expect Arnott to sign a deal maybe with the Habs.
