RowdyFan42
I dread a Rangers-Kings final. I think I'll be rooting for nuclear winter in that case. Rangers-Blackhawks wouldn't be too bad. I mean, the 'Hawks are getting a bit tiresome, but at least I can handle them winning, unlike the Kings. Habs vs. anyone would be ideal. I'd be pulling for Montreal there (sorry, Sterio ), but even if the Western Conference wins the Cup, at least I'd have enjoyed the Finals more. point
I go to bed every night with a NYR fan whom I hauled to CAA for THREE SCF. NJDevs4978
Except I'd argue that series was largely lost because the Rangers owned the Devils that year - they beat the devils, what, 6 or 7 times in the regular season? I don't think the Devils were winning that series one way or the other. They especially weren't winning that series with Marty being awful. They were actually starting to get to Lundqvist a little the last three games of the series but Marty was just so bad it didn't matter. He himself was probably a bit psyched out by the Avery antics to a degree, and he played 77 games that year which was ridiculous but somewhat neccesary to get that sorry Devil team into the playoffs. Jimmy Leeds
This is cathartic. I taught my boys 2 Golden Rules in the Leeds home: One was politcal.....(go figure) and the other was that they could root for any team in any sport, EXCEPT, they HATE the Rangers. Their good boys, they hate the Rangers. Like Maddog, my Facebook page has exploded with my a-hole friends (whom I like very much), but this is just too close for comfort right now. Montreal has to make the Blueskirts a little uncomfortable. This is why you MUST get in the dance, there is no reason this couldn't be our boys........ Any specific reason other than they are the team that beat the Devils in the Cup Finals? For me, that's pretty much it. There's still some lingering bitterness and resentment over the fact that the Devils couldn't get it done, and since the Kings happened to be their opponent, they get the grief. TBH, if it hadn't been the Kings that beat them, I wouldn't have as much of a problem with the prospect of them winning the Cup this year.

Some may call it petty, fine I guess it is, but there will always be that part of me that sees the Kings logo and is reminded of how close the Devils came but fell short. I still have a thing against the Avs for 2001. I don't obsess over either of those organizations but when possible, I'd rather not see them win it all. The only good thing about a potential LA - NYR match up is that if the Kings won, my brother wouldn't be able to say "Hey, remember that time the Devils lost the Cup to the Kings?" I get that every single time their is a LA or Kings mention around him.

Not sure why you should need this explained to you, but I'll give it a try: Many of us find Ranger fans both dumb and annoying; to be fair, it doesn't sound like your sig other is one of them. It's been discussed in detail WHY so many of us find Ranger fans dumb and annoying. They make the same tired jokes over and over again. They think that the Rangers, by virtue of playing in New York, somehow makes that franchise the NHL equivalent of the New York Yankees...they talk about proud traditions, etc., when they've been much closer to the Cubs overall than the Yankees. The one tradition they've proven to be very good at is celebrating one bought Cup win over and over and over again...Rangers basically emptied out the farm to win that '94 Cup, and that "all in" approach, while successful, cost them for years. But as many have pointed out, no other franchise has ever re-celebrated a Cup win as shamelessly and as embarrassingly as the Rangers franchise and their fans. In 2012, after they lost to the Devils in Game 6 in the ECF, there were boneheads saying things like "Duuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh, unless da Debbies (they think it's just hilarious when they call the Devils "the Debbies") win da Cup, it don't matta, 'cause in ninedy-fawr, we won da Cup afta beading dem in da Eastewn Cawnfurence Finawls!" Those losers STILL think NHL hockey stopped for everyone else in '94, just like it did for them. I made the mistake of trying to explain to a bunch of them that losing to the Rangers in the '94 ECF wasn't exactly haunting Devils fans anymore...we saw the team win the Cup the very next season, saw them win again in 2000 and 2003, come within a game of winning another Cup in 2001, and watched the Devils reach the SCF in 2012 at the Rangers' expense. Nope, for those stupid fans (and the Ranger fanbase is by far the most collectively stupid one I've dealt with), it was ninedy-fawr, ninedy-fawr, ninedy-fawr. I used to participate on the ESPN boards back in 2000 and 2001, and the idiot Ranger fans who used to post there were constantly talking about how boring the Devils were, and how more teams need to play "exciting" hockey like the Rangers. Yeah, that 2001 Devils team, the one that led in the NHL in goals scored, the one that boasted two 40+ goal scorers, they sure were sleep-inducing. And the Rangers absolutely SUCKED at that time...they were playing with absolutely ZERO heart and ZERO passion back then. That organization was a complete joke, but Ranger fans couldn't flock fast enough to MSG to watch that trainwreck. Way to give the man upstairs incentive to change things up geniuses! And of course, I had my fun MSG bathroom experience where, to sum up, a guy made a joke directed at me about the Devils, I made one back, and while I was peeing, he thought it'd be a swell idea to get out of line and hit me in the back of the head three times. I wound up winning the fight that resulted (I tried to walk away, but the guy wouldn't allow it), but I rather would've not fought at all. I hate the Rangers and the majority of their fanbase. Yes, right now they're better than the Devils, but that doesn't mean any of us have to like it. I'm not going to constantly bitch about them or try to downplay what they're doing, but if you honestly think that Ranger fans wouldn't have their "panties in a twist" over the Devils having this success if the roles were reversed, then I don't what to tell you. For the most part, we hate everything about the Rangers, and they hate everything about us. There's rivalries like that in all of sports, and for the true-blue diehard Devils fans, this ranks right up with the Red Sox-Yankee level of hatred, and it will NEVER change. Pepperkorn
OK -- now lets have a more honest, less "Because we're better fans than you" defensive sort of response to point's post. It's more like type A type B personalities. It certainly isn't better or more invested fans. Some people gain added enjoyment with upping the stakes. Rivalries amp up the impact of the sport for some people. Each individual game isn't enough -- there needs to be over-arching foes and fictional complications. Like people who really enjoy added drama in their lives. These personality types will gain from hating specific teams long-term and holding grudges. Others are equally passionate, but on a game by game basis. Each foe is equally dangerous and loathsome until conquered. There doesn't need to be an over-arching story line to maintain interest and passion. I think this sort of connection to a team is more difficult to maintain personally. You have to be able to plug in and out pretty quickly. I admit my brain is really more this way but in my gut, I get afraid that if I let things go after they're done I'll lose touch -- I'll lose my fan high. I admit my brain is really more this way but in my gut, I get afraid that if I let things go after they're done I'll lose touch -- I'll lose my fan high. There wasn't anything dishonest or defensive about my post at all. I think it was a pretty fair explanation about why a lot of Devils fans despise everything Ranger-related. I didn't attack point's level of fandom...I didn't even mention it. Never said I was a better fan than him...but at the same time, even if he doesn't agree with MD2020 and others, he should at least be able to understand why some Devils fans passionately hate the Rangers without someone having to tell him. I don't need you to psychoanalyze the reasons why I happen to hate the Rangers...you of all people shouldn't be trying to get into anyone's heads. It's not like the Devils haven't had fierce rivalries with other teams (Flyers, Hurricanes), but I don't hate the Flyers really, or the Hurricanes (and the Devils/Flyers rivarly has been an intense one, especially when the Rangers were irrelevant there for a while). Sorry, hating the Rangers doesn't mean I'm like people who are constantly on the lookout for extra drama in their lives...that's a ridiculous connection to try to make. I don't need any over-arching story lines or any of that crap...I watch as many Devils games as I possibly can, and I'm pretty equally passionate about all of them as I'm watching. Yeah, there's always a little more juice with some teams, either because of rivalries or something more being at stake (like standings or a playoff position). But I think that's all sports. There's always going to be rivalry games that mean just a little more on the schedule to fans than others, and there's no deep reasons for it, other than "They're the bad guys." Even if they're not really "bad".
95Crash
During the Devils Stanley Cup runs, I always noticed the occasional Rangers fan or two walking around town wearing their NYR hats or T-shirts, and in a way, I secretly admired their tenacity. So lately my boy (he's 5) and I have been wearing our Devils gear -- mostly T's, sometimes a hat -- a little bit more often than usual. It's sort of a subtle message to all the Rags fans in the area, letting them know: Hey, remember, we are here. Sure, you (Rags fans) are showing your numbers now, all proud because your team is doing well, but don't get any false allusions. We (Devils fans) are still here, we are always going to be here, and you are always going to be reminded that you don't own these (N.J.) towns anymore. Enjoy your little run now, but keep in mind that it isn't 1981. It is 2014, and this is Devils country, and it always will be Devils country.

Daniel
People have made a similar point already, but in terms of overall franchise success, the Rangers are basically the equivalent of the Mets. If Met fans were as arrogant about their team and other teams as Ranger fans . . . well you get the idea. Or for whatever reason, it reminds me of Yankee fans that bring "We Believe" signs to games. Like "we believe" that outspending everyone for over a decade will eventually get us a World Series or two.

Great post Though I HATE when out of touch Rag fans still allude to the Jersey burbs being 50/50 in terms of fans. It hasn't been like that in literally 20 years. It probably sounds pathetic but whenever this "too close for comfort" cup run of 2014 ends I will probably feel like celebrating in some way, because the crises was averted. And some relief of course knowing they won't come this close again for a long long time
