i would bet butcher broke his collarbone - reminiscent of josefson. i'd expect 2 months.

without sounding like an idiot facebook fan - what is the rule about getting Ty Smith back. I know there are "emergency conditions" but I am unclear on what those are.

if butcher is going to miss significant time, as I'd bet he will, there isn't a great option for PP1 and that LHD. Santini and Gryba are RH.

although i guess this could get yakovlev back up here - i forgot about him. is he running bingo's PP? he has five assists.

Right, I am not dialed into the league as a whole...Toronto is #1 in the east, got it.  Where do we stand in the east?

You'll have an accurate answer no later than June.

The Devils have won four games. That's fantastic. It's also a 82 game season.

This was unbelievable...never saw a goalie hung out to dry like that. Not even his D-men pass him a player’s stick?

someone who thinks they know something about the devils and hockey and clearly doesn't.

calling for Ty Smith if Butcher misses a great deal of time is obviously reactionary and almost certainly not something the devils will do. I am not even sure they can - I think there is some loophole that allows it but I'm not sure what it is. But I was asking if anyone knew the loophole.

The only “live stream” I have is when I take my morning piss.

I see.  So this is for the "hockey elitists"...similar to the American "Euro Snob" in the American soccer context. Got it.

Devils can't recall Ty Smith.  I can't find the conditions under which they could potentially recall him but I believe they are basically if everyone else in the organization is injured or there is some reason why their minor league team players are inaccessible (say, a major snowstorm in Binghamton or something) - the Flames managed to bring up Sven Baertschi this way a few years ago, but yeah, he's not coming.

I think they will move Vatanen or Severson over to the left side and play Santini.

Still hoping he’s ok but he skated off with that look on his face like something was very, very wrong.

Wood is awesome.

Yeah he kind of is. Glad he’ll be around a few years.

You’ve clearly had plenty of concussions.

Just one I can remember...against Morris Knolls....woke up, staring at the ceiling in Mennen Arena, looking at stars, didn't know where I was for a minute...then I got escorted to the penalty box.  I played with reckless abandon.  Just call me the "enforcer".

While it's true that there've been extenuating circumstances in all the Devils' wins, they're still getting the W's pretty handily.  There's no reason the Stars couldn't've played better than this - they lost last night in Ottawa, true, but they didn't play all that well, Kinkaid did, and they also couldn't really get any breaks (except for Hall throwing the puck out).

So yeah, team looks great 5 on 5 and that penalty kill is also quite good.  I'd like to see Hischier off PP1 but I know that's probably not happening any time soon.

Polak is garbage and Butcher's probably going to miss the next game at the very least.

Kenny said it at the end of the game, there will be tests ahead, but it's good to see they are banking these points early.  They will need them.

Re:  the bolded...the Rangers were dealt an extremely favorable schedule early last season, and didn't take advantage...that hurt them.  If the Devils come away with 4 or 5 points in their next four games, they'll have banked 12 or 13 out of 16 points...I would've definitely signed up for that.

Devils embark on a seven-game trip starting 11/30:  Tampa, Detroit, Islanders, Penguins, Senators, Maple Leafs, and Jets.  7 games in 13 games.  So yeah, after a very ease-in early schedule that will have seen the Devils enjoy some extended rest periods and tons of home cookin', things are going to change in a hurry.  I would take a 4-3-0 trip or thereabouts pretty happily...20 points or so after 15 games (109 point pace) with the longest road trip of the season out of the way sounds pretty good to me.

Bank the points while you can. Schedules, injuries, etc will happen. Get the points you can get and move onto the next 2.

And the Devils have definitely done that in the early going.  But you know how some fans get...they treat all 82 games on the schedule as if they are all equally winnable entities, and start picking apart everything when the team dares to lose some games.  No team gets up for all 82 games equally...and there's always that handful of games where a team pretty much says "fvck it, we're collectively spent and we're not going to kill ourselves trying to win this one"...not that they're outright throwing any given game of course, but these guys all know their bodies well enough to know that there's going to be those 4-5 nights or so where they try to balance recharging with getting through a game.  And of course there's games where it's just not clicking that given night.  Some fans also constantly forget that "bad" teams beat "good" teams a lot more often than they seem to realize...even bottom-feeders usually win 20-25 games.

As far as scheduling goes, I'll be thrilled if the Devils somehow keep it up on the upcoming road trip (and finish up this home-heavy part of the schedule on a continued flourish), but I'm definitely not expecting any better than 4-3-0 on the trip...especially if Butcher is out for a significant amount of time.

Bottom line, its fine to get excited about a good start, but its 4 games. As they mentioned last night, the last time we went 4-0 to start a season was 95-96, and then we promptly missed the playoffs as Stanley Cup Champions from the prior year. I was at that Ottawa game, and I still remember being absolutely shocked they lost and I still hate Ottawa to this day because of it.

But, to me, the encouraging thing is HOW we won those games, most notably:

1) The defense has been pretty good, with the possible exception of the Sharks game where they got a TON of shots on goal. Andy Greene hasn't looked awful, Severson either, and aside from a few miscues last night, Mueller has looked pretty good too.

2) The offense is getting it done without any goals from Hall or Hischier. Secondary scoring is something we lacked even last year, its part of the reason Taylor Hall is the MVP, he was doing it alone.

3) KK has looked incredibly solid and is clearly ready to replace Schneider if he can't come back at a high level from injury, or at dead least, to share the workload.

4) We completely dominated the reigning champs, came from behind to beat a 100 point team from last year, and also beat two teams we were "supposed to".

5) Marcus Johansson hasn't had a concussion yet. Of course we haven't played the Bruins.

We have a lot of reason to feel encouraged at the moment. But it's nowhere near time to talk about whether we're the "best in the East" or whatever.

True that. What will be interesting is that usually that first road trip of the season is where the coaches are trying to do some team-building and build some culture. We've seemingly already gotten that out of the way and are icing what looks like a very together group 4 games in. It'll be interesting to see them walk into away buildings with a unified front, hopefully surprising some of these teams.
