Marshall
League rescinds part of Kovalchuk contract penalty. Breaking now by Dreger. Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger NHL will award Devils with the 30th pick in the Draft instead of the 1st round pick as usually determined. Also forgiving $1.5 mil of fine. njd3b1ink
Wow woulda been nice to have done this before the trade deadline. Maybe we would have been more inclined to trade this pick or a 2nd rounder. Good news though I guess.
roomtemp
Watch as that becomes our first round pick anyway
Jimmy Leeds
Lou was banking on that I think.
Daniel
I'm really starting to believe that before game 6 of the 1994 ECF, Bettman went to Lou, told him the team should take a dive, and that it would be made up to him as long as he remained the GM. DJ Eco
Wow that's amazing news. Like Jimmy said, I think Lou's been expecting this all along. That's the only rational for holding onto the pick in 2012 for Matteau. He knew something we didn't... This is great news.
skeeter
Lou told the Fan Club back in 2010 that he pretty much had something up his sleeve.

Z-Man
Wow. Just wow. Definitely softens the blow. Still, if we had forfeited the 29th pick after the SCF, we'd potentially be picking in the top 10 this year.

Devils731
League hated VBK for that contract, I bet this only got changed because new ownership has come in and the league didn't want to penalize Harris and his $$$.
sundstrom
i am obviously happy about this but i don't know how he could've known all along. the fact is, they are still likely entitled to pick 5-10 this year instead of 30.
maxpower
It's a King Solomon ruling. It's nice but it's not great. Maybe it let us keep players, but at the same time doing it this way cost us yesterday
halfsharkalligatorhalfman
I don't think Lou expected this. I don't think this happens unless Kovy goes to the KHL. I think Lou honestly thought the team was going to contend for the past two years and keeping the pick in 2012 was crucial to the efforts to retain Parise. League hated VBK for that contract, I bet this only got changed because new ownership has come in and the league didn't want to penalize Harris and his $$$. Marshall
I'd wager a nice chunk that this was a condition by Harris & co to buy the team from VBK/NHL.

roomtemp
I wouldn't be surprised if this was thought of all along just to make the punishment look more harsh then it really was.
eldon
That's good news, at least it's something back. The league definitely singled us out, doing a similar tactic other teams did, while they received no penalty.
Triumph
Lou told the Fan Club back in 2010 that he pretty much had something up his sleeve. Maybe it let us keep players, but at the same time doing it this way cost us yesterday I don't really think it did. Who moved for a first round pick? Whatever, it's a 1st round pick. Nice to have. NJDevs4978
Holy **** this is the best news we've had in ages. Yeah we're still going down from whatever it would be to 30 but at least it's not bupkus. Edited March 6, 2014 by NJDevs4978

Triumph
This has nothing to do with Kovalchuk going to the KHL. Nothing at all. Remember, the penalty is for the first contract.
