NJDevs4978
I'm not too thrilled over rushing Severson or rotating Larsson/Gelinas/Severson for two spots.
devilsrule33
It's unreal because many people don't like Harrold or Bernier. Bernier was a given to be waived, but Harrold wasn't. The issue is Harrold was a percect 7th defenseman. Now you have one of Larsson, Gelinas or Severson going to be scratched each game. And if Gelinas D' doesn't get better, I think more often it will be him. If all 3 young guys play well, Zidlicky's days might be numbered. What it probably came down to was the staff thinking Severson outplayed Larsson and Gelinas in camp. You can't waive either of them, so it put them in a tough spot. sundstrom
i am real surprised that severson is making the team. he's certainly played well enough to earn it. as much as i'd love salvador to be the scratch, i can actually appreciate how he needs to be in the lineup for the PK and that skill set. i agree totally that i hate the idea of larsson, gelinas or severson being a scratch consistently. that just makes no sense to me. I just added in my last post that the staff had to feel that Severson outplayed both Larsson and Gelinas for this move to be made. Neither of which would make it through waivers. Gelinas did not have a good camp. I expect him to be scratched most nights. Either way, it is going to piss off a long of young players if they are getting scratched. Of course Salvador can get hurt, and this will solve everything. You could also rest Zid or Salvador on b2bs, but not holding my breathe on that one. msweet
Salvador is going to get hurt. 15 games is over/under Same for Clowe.. ok I give him 25 games over/under
Triumph
Could easily dress 7 D as well - that's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. The key to getting in the lineup for the young players is to play better.
SterioDesign
why would anyone be surprised by the situation? We started each last seasons with mess like this. Against the wall forced to make risky moves. Risking losing players on waivers Risk of young guys being sat cause waiving them is too risky Hoping someone gets hurt so that we have some breathing room Looking at any paper moves to give us breathing room until "god knows" happen Bunch of players clueless about their future It's part of the game and this is all business but this is a typical early season stuff lol nothing to be surprised by here, Sal getting injured and Harrold not getting picked up would be a blessing Edited October 6, 2014 by SterioDesign
Daniel
I could see dressing seven D with Gelinas as the PP specialist. I believe it's also possible that Harrold can pass through waivers and be recalled, in which case Severson would be sent down to Albany. Lou indicated that some of the players put on waivers might not be sent to Albany if they clear.

You have an abundance of forwards as it is, so why only dress 11 of them. Gelinas has value to the PP, but I bet they feel comfortable with Zidlicky and Severson working the PP. Probably should just be 20 guys, that way no one is sitting out and ruined by sitting. Although then you have the difficulty of separating out which 3 guys are better than the rest of the guys but worse than the other 20. Maybe being a GM is hard. I could see Gelinas starting off as a scratch for the majority of the first 10 games, and seeing how good the PP is without him. It also might be the case that Severson would be on a pretty short leash.

Jerzey
Truly shocked that Harrold was sent down. Is it confirmed that Severson made the team? I mean if it's between him and Helgeson I can understand (although I haven't seen any preseason games to say one is better than the other. Just going off what everyone else is saying). That's a lot of youth but I guess we got what we've been asking for. Still possible a trade is coming for a veteran d I guess. Also, what are the chances Montreal claims Bernier because of the French thing? Edited October 6, 2014 by Jerzey Devil

That's actually pretty encouraging for our defense going forward. The majority of our defense is under 22(?) and the coaching staff seems to trust them. If they can make it work we're looking to be set on D for years.
Mitico12
That's just it - why would Derek Roy sign in a place that has Elias, Henrique, and Zajac? It doesn't make any sense for him to do that unless he's in the same spot Gomez is in now. And that goes for pretty much any other center. You still need that 5th guy somewhere in the organization. Elias isn't a center so I'm not sure why everyone slots him in at that position 100% of the time. He needs to play wing.
devilsrule33
As for the main discussion of this thread, nothing has been solved on the forward front since everyone could predict Janssen and Bernier would be waived. Lou has to be working the phones right now. Brunner is not a 4th line player, but there will be openings in the top 9 at some point. He's had a good camp. In my mind, it's Josefson/Gomez/Brunner competing for two spots.

I do think Brunner could be traded - people don't realize what a pitiful year Brunner had at ES last year - but he's still a speed guy on a team that needs every bit of speed it can get. Well very few if any thought Bernier would be on this team in this thread. If they are worried about speed, and they should be, Boucher is in their back pocket. My issue with trading any offense is that Clowe is a huge question mark. Havlat will get hurt. Jagr is 42 and Elias is 38. You trade Brunner and before you know it, you have a 3rd line of Gio and Tootoo, and a bunch of call ups on the 4th line.
Triumph
Boucher isn't really fast though, he's just fast compared to guys like Clowe and Ryder and Zubrus. But yeah I think Brunner goes, that leaves 2 forward spots open, they sign Carter and Gomez.
