And you're on drugs if you seriously think what line a player is on has anything to do with giving up uniform numbers. If you want to get technical, Zubrus gave up his # to a 4th liner who isn't a future HOF'er as Shanahan is. Having said that, Shanahan isn't getting 14, but it's not due to him being a "4th liner". No one I think will argue his best years were spent on the Wings HOWEVER I was just checking his stats over the course of the last 3 seasons and they are not terrible. Shanahan getting 4th line minutes, PP and PK minutes, will be more effective then any of the "future stars" in Lowell that many folks on this board are longing for. That unconditional love for those kids makes me scratch my head. Brendan Shanahan at 40 blows away ANY option on the farm. Unfortunately, many here go ga-ga over names like Bergfors. Is it because he was a first rounder? I digress. As far as who comes out of the lineup? I think Madden's days are numbered on this roster. If that's not the plan, then in my eyes, Pando is forward #13. For anyone who thinks Rupper comes out, last night is the perfect reason he doesn't. Greene levels Parise=Rupp pounds Greene. The Devils have MANY willing fighters who do a great job, but Rupper is a heavyweight. Never thought I'd say that, but he has really impressed this season. This has been my favorite Devils team in years, 'cause they have an edge they haven't had since having Oliwa. With fighting up BIG TIME, and it not going away any time soon, the fact that he does what he does, AND, he can play the game, not only do you keep him in the lineup, but I think he gets a long, hard look as a re-sign this summer. Of course, my version of "can play" doesn't mean he's only 22, and has 30 goal potential with first line minutes, as it seems many here want as a requirement to be on this roster. One more thing, do people need to get on Sheldon friggin Brookbank at all times? He's a spare part, and when called upon, he does fine as said spare part. Geez. People need to enjoy this team more! They're not going 82-0. They are not pitching 82 shutouts. They will not have 8 30 goal scorers. They will not field a lineup of nothing but 22 year old first round picks. No one is winning the Norris. Brent Sutter is here for the long haul. Sheldon Brookbank is what he is, and despite no big names, our D is doing a pretty damn good job! Just enjoy a scrappy team who has some great nights, and has some bad nights. Let's face it folks, in the end, we'll be in the dance, with just as much potential to do damage as everyone else. SueNJ97 Posted January 11, 2009 Share Posted January 11, 2009 Not thrilled...I realize the team basically needs to score 3 to win until Brodeur gets back and that the offense hasn't been consistent the last several games (good-bad-awful-good-awful-awful-good-etc) so they had to do something, but I'm not sure this was it. I guess the theory is that Shanahan has been most useful in the first half of the season the last few years (and he'll only be playing one half of a season) and he's really most useful on the PP. That may be true - but that means he has to actually want to be here, and I'm not sure that's true, I think he wanted to sign with the Rangers and gave up hope, and it also means that, essentially, NJ will be giving a regular shift to a guy who is now a PP specialist. I have great respect for Shanahan. He had a fantastic career. But it worries me to sign a guy who spent several months hoping that the team across the river would sign him and 'settled' for NJ and who would also be taking up a regular shift when he is now a PP specialist. NJ is a team you have to really want to play for - or you don't play here. Holik was definitely right about that, much as it pains me to say it. And as much as the PP needs help (despite the inability of the Kings to kill penalties last night), a guy who is really here as a PP specialist isn't necessarily going to fit in with a team that has just deliberately moved to strategy of rolling 4 lines (away from matching and giving the checking line more time at the expense of the 'top' lines). Shanny has always been one of the better leaders in the NHL and even if he is sitting on the bench most of the game, that is something we were missing for a while. A true leader. If the Devils are running a hockey team and not a seniority list, the odd man out should be Jay Pandolfo, pending another move by Lamoriello. agreed and i think rupp has played very well this season. hell, rupp has played better than bobby holik, who has somehow earned carte blanche around here 'cause every once in a while he lays some guy out, even though he takes dumb penalty after dumb penalty. the sports nerd is officially excited that shanahan will be a devil (again), in the same way that i was excited that valeri kamensky would be a devil. another thing that has to be looked at re: shanahan's fatigue and awfulness in the playoffs is that he was playing 20 minutes a game 2 years ago and 18:30 last season. i mean, sh!t, zach parise doesn't play that many minutes. so i think as a 13-15 minute player he will be more effective. one thing that does worry me is what sue said, though - he doesn't seem 100% committed to new jersey. from that interview it sounds more like shanny isn't looking forward to taking the metaphorical PATH train - i'd like it a lot more if he said something silly and unprofessional like that he wanted to get back at sather and the rangers. What move could possibly make sense that wouldn't show the Devils were going for it this year? In fact, I would speculate there are many moves that Lou could do that would be more win-now than a move like this is. I may not ever want to see Brookbank in the lineup, but he's a class act who always plays hard and never complains about playing time. Whether or not he should be in Jersey, he's done nothing to merit us going after him -- he's not getting paid much, and he's never pretended to be a superstar.
