devilsrule33
Does Marty need another week after the all-star break to decide his future, or does he need one more week to collect his $100,000 bonus on February 1st?
NJDevs4978
A week doesn't get him to the 1st. If it gets to that point the Blues would waive him before tha'd date. Edited January 21, 2015 by NJDevs4978
Colorado Rockies 1976
Marty basically had a "one last chance based on the fact that I'm the all-time-winningest-goalie in the NHL and am one of the all-time greats" card. He cashed it in with the Blues. He played at about the same level as he did for most of the past two seasons. No surprises, no heartwarming story, no unforeseen comeback. Just a guy who clearly isn't anywhere near what he was and won't ever be again, no matter how he much he still loves the game and still loves playing it. It will always be his legacy to do with as he chooses, and I still firmly believe he can't do anything to "tarnish, stain, blah blah blah" his Devils career, but if he's going to try to catch on with another team, it's just going to look desperate and a little sad...the proverbial guy who simply didn't know it was time to get out, that the game gave him up before he could give it up himself. I'm not saying he should necessarily care what anyone thinks, but it's never pretty when a former great who clearly has almost nothing left simply can't see it. HellOnICE
Bobrovsky is injured. fvck it, get Marty in there as one last hurrah... they did it with Slava.
ATLL765
Alimony is expensive I really doubt that his alimony payments factored into his decision to try to keep playing. He's made plenty of money and I'm sure he has no problems making any alimony or child support payments. Bobrovsky is injured. fvck it, get Marty in there as one last hurrah... they did it with Slava. I don't know if Marty would go to a team in our division. I know he really wanted to keep playing this year, but I think he has too much respect for Lou and the team to play anywhere where he would have to face the Devils often. I'm sure that's part of why he spurned the offer that was rumored to have come from the Penguins and why he went out west to play. I think that if his only options were in the Eastern conference that he would only have chosen to play for a team in the other division in the conference. NJDevs4978
He meant have him go to the All-Star game as a replacement
Steadevils
Ticket sales this spring could be brutal at The Rock and I could think of one way to boost sales.....
HellOnICE
Brodeur woud have no effect on sales other than his last game. No one cares anymore.
Colorado Rockies 1976
I don't need to see a going-on-43-years-old Marty stop pucks at an .890ish rate and be a shell of what he was. Cory is doing a fine job and doesn't need the specter of Marty hanging around. The only way I'm OK with Marty ever playing for the Devils again is the scenario I posted before: one home game at the very end of the season (provided there's absolutely nothing on the line), then retirement. Yeah this. Let's say Marty did return to the Devils to be a backup; it would send the wrong message to the entire team, that it's more about one guy than the group. And Lou wouldn't do that. This is why they parted ways in the first place; because keeping Marty around would hurt the team. It was Cory's time despite Marty's legacy. Again, if the situation is right, I'd bring him back for the one game too.
Daniel
Brodeur woud have no effect on sales other than his last game. No one cares anymore. I don't think this is true. They might be wrong, but a sizable portion of the Devils fanbase still reveres the guy to the point that a lot of them will say that he is currently a better goalie than Schneider. You're right though that the most it would do for the bottom line would be to boost ticket sales for the last couple of games, which presumes that the Devils are eliminated from playoff contention. Everyone who would ever want it already has their Marty gear.

Lateralous
Rich Chere had some interesting comments about Marty on Hockey Central the other day. Paraphrasing, he said that if you talk to people close to Marty, the 700 wins is way more important to him than he is letting on to the media. As others have pointed out, I don't see any way he is getting there this year. It's a shame that the lame half season lockout a few years back seems to be the difference in him not going out a Devil for life.

Yeah what chere says about 700 may be true, but id sooner believe it from hockeyinsiderrr or a CAA security guard. Chere has lost all credibility the last few years.
